    Barbaro Updates: 156

    updates are now here.

Update 1182: No Barbaro update yet this morning. It was very foggy at Fair Hill this morning, and again nice and warm for this time of year. I took Hawty Creek up "Goat House Hill" ... she basically had a nice gallop outback up a little bit of an incline. She is doing pretty well at the moment, and should likely work a half a mile on saturday. Gator Nation was again a pleasure to gallop first set this morning. He actually winnies at you when he thinks he's going to train, I swear I have never come across another horse that does that! His half sister also galloped on the track today. She's only been here a few short weeks but is really going nicely, learning how to switch leads and so forth as she gallops.

Here is a newscast from Mike Schuh from the press conference yesterday: Barbaro Makes More Improvements With Injured Legs.

Update 1181: The media at the press conference really picked up on the notion that Barbaro may be released from New Bolton soon. It is here, here, here, here, here, here and here (I am sure elsewhere too). Steve Haskin actually wrote about the purpose of the Press Conference: Barbaro Fund Receives Donation from Sale of Miniatures. I thought the big news was that Barbaro has no bandage on his right hind leg.

Here is a quick update on Ouija Board.

The Barbaro update will likely be later this morning.

Update 1180: My New Bolton visit today (wednesday).

This visit had two purposes. To hang some more posters on the fence line of New Bolton, and to attend the press conference: Breyer Donating Portion of Barbaro Figure Proceeds to New Bolton Fund. I had arranged to meet Skyler at New Bolton to help me with the former task. Skyler called me as I began putting up the new posters and helped me finish up. Fortunately the rain was tapering off, so it became a nice pleasant task. We then drove (independantly) to the New Bolton parking lot as Skyler wanted to buy a couple of sweatshirts from New Bolton, and I was attending the press conference. As we walked in we met Tom, driving in to take care of Barbaro (groom, outside to graze etc.) It was a brief but fun meeting. Once inside New Bolton I said goodbye to Skyler and went into the press conference. I was quite surprised by the number of media in attendance, but I guess I should not have been, it is about Barbaro!

Before the press conference started I chatted with Mr. Jackson, and as we were chatting of course quite a few people would stop by and join the conversation (not because of me you understand ...) It was fun being introduced to some other media folk. Dr. Richardson stopped by, it was at this point he informed us that the new shoe was applied yesterday at around 4 pm. He also mentioned there was now no bandage on the right hind (when I heard that I was hoping to hear it again later, so I was not mistaken). Anyway, soon the press conference began.

Those "behind the table" at the press conference were Tony Fleshman, boss of Breyer, Dean Joan Hendricks (Penn Vet School Dean), Mr. and Mrs. Jackson and Dr. Richardson. Mr. Fleshman spoke first, and very eloquently about the horse, the mission of Breyer and how honored they were to raise money for the Barbaro Fund (or something like that anyway). Dean Hendricks spoke second. She highlighted the preparedness of work of a place like New Bolton, and the new spotlight Barbaro had placed on veterinary medicine and horse racing alike. Mrs. Jackson spoke on behalf of herself and her husband. Again she was very eloquent, humble and a little amusing. The final speaker was Dr. Richardson, whose remarks were also quite light-hearted and upbeat. There was clearly a very different atmosphere to this press conference than to the previous one in July.

Dr. Richardson then took questions. He confirmed Barbaro does not have a bandage on his right hind leg, and that the new special shoe was applied at about 4 pm yesterday. Dr. Richardson reiterated that Barbaro has hurdles in front of him; he has "a long way to go - we have come a fair distance" was a direct quote. When asked about his current condition he noted that he walks daily, and was likely out now (at the time of the press conference, and of course knowing Tom was there at the time I guess he was right). I am hoping some of the news organizations that were there today recorded the remarks as there was some interesting detail I could not capture. Basically his left hind foot is in a bandage (no shoe), the right hind the fracture has healed to the point where no additional support (bandage) is necessary. The leg does not look entirely normal, but he can get around on it, and he's a happy horse.

Dr. Richardson was asked how long Barbaro would remain at New Bolton. The answer: it depends on many things, but he could leave New Bolton "in the not too distant future". Dr. Richardson was asked to clarify what that meant, and with a smile he said sometime from after the press conference to when he retires (I am not sure who "he" refers to in this statement).

Dr. Richardson noted his weight was 1132lbs. It fluctuates a little. He is eating well, he has good flesh, all his vital signs are normal, and his coat looks beautiful (I can attest to that).

Dr. Richardson was asked how long it would take the for left hind foot to be normal. It could be years, and he will never have a completely normal foot. He has some hoof wall (fair amount I think was Dr. Richardson's term), but it will be a few months before he can get a shoe (glue on shoe).

I asked about the shoe applied yesterday to his right hind. It is "special" in the sense that it is designed to provide additional support and includes an extended heal (again, I hope this was recorded as there was some interesting stuff described). It is not a normal looking shoe. It is also a glue on shoe.

Dr. Richardson noted how smart the horse was, and how this has aided his recovery. He also noted how steadfast the Jackson's had been in supporting their horse, visiting twice a day. Dr. Richardson suggested (with a grin) that they were simply checking up on his work.

All in all, an upbeat press conference. I chatted with a couple of people before leaving. On my way out I met Lisa from NY, who was visiting with Kennett Florist. The tree looks very cool!

Update 1179: Barbaro remains comfortable. Although I did not hear directly from a visit, I was at a press conference at New Bolton Center for the Barbaro Breyer model. Dr. Richardson spoke, among others. He then took questions. I will provide a more detailed report on my visit in the next update, suffice it to say that the key things I learned:

    a. Barbaro had his right hind shoe changed yesterday, 4 pm
    b. Barbaro no longer has a bandage on his right hind leg (yes, you read that correctly)
    c. The Barbaro Breyer model raised $114,710 for the Barbaro Fund.

I used to be a member of a bird club that went to churches, schools, nursing homes, 4H clubs and fairs to teach people about exotic birds.

At a 4H club I had a couple dozen kids with their eyes wide open passing my macaw from arm to arm, but one of the most satisfying was a day care center for Alzheimer's patients. There were three people that did not speak a word before we were there, but after we left they started talking. The social worker told me that a couple months later they were still talking about our birds.

Two ladies who were friends there, both patients, never knew that they had both raised canaries when they were younger. They talked about that constantly after we left.

It really leaves you with a nice feeling to be able to do something like that.

Anyone know what a Butt-Belly-Back Rub is?!!

    From Longmeadow Rescue Horse updates:

    "Sweetie's update (12/12/06)
The Chiropractor adjusted and found a pretty good torque in her pelvis and some mild lumbar adjustments. She will be getting daily Butt-Belly-Back Rub and Tail stretch. We think this will help the lameness in her left fore and left rear."

    Dearest Barbaro,
How great is the news today from Alex!!!!! No more bandage on your right leg. We have waited such a long time for this moment. If only the "L" hadn't struck him in July, he might have been home for Christmas. Not looking back, just ahead. It must feel so good to not have a bandage on anymore, but you are used to leg wraps. Grow that hoof, Barbaro. We will concentrate our prayers on that hoof. Butterfly kisses from Bella, Gracie and me.

Thank you Alex for such wonderful news !!!!!

Great news about that right hind leg and new shoe!

So sad about the horse put to sleep after breaking its leg during a gallop. If the racing industry wasn't in such a hurry to get these thoroughbreds started, and would wait until they were three or four years old and their bones had hardened, instead of two, this type of injury would probably be drastically reduced! But sadly, I guess that will never happen. At least we're making progress with better track surfaces. Gotta look on the + side!

Excellent report for Our Big Boss Horse! Way to go, Barbaro! Good to see that you have made such wonderful progress. Many thanks to Dr. R., the Jacksons, and all the vets and nurses at NBC for never ever giving up on this great, brave horse! Best Holiday Wishes to you all!

Speaking of holidays, I did't post yesterday because I was out trying to get into the Christmas Spirit. It finally happened when I went with my sister to South Seattle to Santa's Workshop and, with her fellow employees, made like an elf and helped wrap presents for a needy family with three female adults and two little girls aged three years and seven years old. What a wonderful feeling it was to provide a needy family with no hope of a happy holiday with presents and the gift of knowing that people really care!

Hay - some jerk STOLE from Joe at tbfriends. I hope karma catches up with the cretin because he stole money out of the horses mouths in my opinion:

So the new tractor, which is surely saving wear and tear on my ancient old body, needs diesel gasoline. Two bright yellow diesel containers go into the back of the white ranch truck. In Woodland I first stop at Raleys because my chest hurts and my giant nose is clogged and bronchial pneumonia is two or three breaths away. I buy all the right stuff. Cold meds and cough syrup and Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Chocolate milk and a Home Run apple pie. Then it is on to the gas station for diesel. I slide the ATM card and wait for approval which often never comes. But yesterday was okay, approval given, and then it dawns on me the two yellow diesel containers are no longer in the back of the white ranch truck. Obviously someone in Raleys parking lot committed a theft. I could have phoned Sheriff Andy Griffith, who was probably home having lunch with Aunt Bea. I pushed cancel on the gas pump and drove to Kragens, which is an auto store. Bought two more yellow diesel containers. Back to the gas station, and ATM once again gave approval. Cold and rainy, and the windshield wipers would not function. Driving home in a bronchial coma with my head hanging out the window so I could see. There have been phone calls saying you want more information about life on our ranch. Well there you go...

Forgot to add from Joe's bog:

But before the trip to Woodland, and before our bright yellow gas containers were lifted from a parking lot at Raleys and probably sold later on E-Bay, came a 5 year old gelding up our driveway. We bought him from a killer in Turlock, and his name is now Kodak. A Kodak Moment. Kodak is bay and has a racing tattoo. But it has no doubt been months since Kodak was a race horse. His feet are in terrible shape. His coat dull, and he has several bite marks all over his skinny little butt. A feed lot graduate. You always know the signs...

Great news!! No bandage and new shoes..Yes, we have a lot to give thanks for !! Thank you Alex, Dr. Richardson & the Jacksons and all who have supported this effort. On a happy note here is a poem I wrote last night about Barbaro & Santa

Barbaro was in his stall but feeling a little down
Everyone was singing carols about Santa coming to town
I sure wish Santa would come to see me he said
As he laid down gingerly on his fluffy straw bed
Santa heard Barbaro so to NBC he came
Bringing with him gifts for everyone and lots of peppermint candy canes

When it came time to see Barbaro down in ICU
Santa knew exactly what he had to do
He donned scrubs over his red suit and paper covers over his boots
Over his white beard he put a mask , all of this without being asked
He went to every unit greeting everyone by name
All the doctors and staff and every animal he treated the same
He finally got to his destination, the stall of the Big Bay
He really was interested in what Barabaro had to say
Barbaro said Santa, I'm sure glad you came by
I need a special favor and if you come close I'll tell you why
You see I have a little problem
I've been too embarrassed to mention
What I really want for Christmas
    Is a tail hair extension
I take my morning walk with as much dignity as I can muster
But it's hard to look like the stud I am with a tail like a feather duster!
And when they take me out to graze and the cold wind hits my backside..
Well all I can say is I need a tail long enough to cover my"pride"
I know they sell extensions I see them catalogs all the time
    But I don't have a computer so I can't order online
They treat me like a king here, so I don't want to complain
Dr R and allthe staff have done everything to keep me from being lame
But when I think about the ladies my ego starts to sag
Who'd want a stud who looks like a bob-tailed nag
Now Santa was nodding..so glad his mask was in place
Because it was taking a supreme effort to keep a straight face
Barbaro, don't you worry, I'll grant your wish
For Christmas you'll get extensions and a tail you can swish!!
Barbaro was so happy he nickered in delight
Merry Christmas FOB's, God Bless and Good Night..

    Cora,

I rode ponys named Rusty and Dusty in New Hampshire when I was ages 7-13 or thereabouts. Bareback. I actually learned how to put on a bridle and groom them. We would go out in an apple orchard where they knew the with their eyes closed. Galloping out the other side of the orchard to my grandfather who was always waiting w/apples. :-)

Since then I have not ridden much and live on the opposite coast now. I hope to get back around horses again very soon! Barbaro and ALEX and all those who contribute to this site have taught me so much about horses, racing, rescues, Yiddish (CJ), the goverment process for passage of a bill, and much more! So to answer your question, my desk at work is slowly become a shrine to Mr. B Jackson but that has only happened because of this site and the Big Boss Horse!

Goodnight you loyal fans of Barbaro...

Miracle after miracle...we are seeing every day, every minute...Barbaro...you are loved!!!!

We, graciously thank Our Lord, for watching our boy, and giving Dr. R, and his staff guidance and strength to take care of him. And to the Jacksons, our love and best wishes to them.

I pray, God helps us with a Big Miracle in January to get our bill passed...In the meantime, to watch over the ones that cannot speak for themselves.

You all are so talented and gifted in all ways...Look and pat yourselves on the back for a wonderful job.

I just got this through from Don...

"Jockeys Jermaine Bridgmohan, Ray Fuentes and Jeffrey Sanchez escaped serious injury on Monday when Bridgmohan’s horse suffered a catastrophic injury in the last race at Calder.
The apprentice’s mount, Watch Me Flash, broke down in the stretch while on the lead, throwing Bridgmohan over her head and to the ground. As a result of the accident, Fuentes was also thrown from his mount, Molly McGee, as was Sanchez from Aurora Ridge.
Bridgmohan and Fuentes walked off the track on their own accord, but Sanchez was taken to the hospital immediately for examination. Bridgmohan and Fuentes have both returned to ride in races at Calder on Wednesday, but Sanchez is off his mounts due to a swollen right eye.
Sanchez’ agent Bernie Gonzalez said, “He is unable to ride because his eye is swollen shut. He’s putting ice on it, but he can’t open his eye. There’s a big scratch over it. It’s better today than yesterday and he should be fine soon. He’s very lucky and we’re very thankful that he didn’t get seriously hurt.”
It was the first spill for Bridgmohan, 18, who just started race riding this year and is currently the leading jockey of the Tropical Park meet.
“That was my first bad one,” said Bridgmohan on Wednesday. “My back’s sore. I went to the chiropractor yesterday and had some acupuncture. I’ll continue with that treatment until I feel better.
“I’ve never had something like that happen before,” Bridgmohan continued. “I’m trying not to think about it. I watched the replay once and I don’t want to see it anymore.”
Both Molly McGee and Aurora Ridge were uninjured, but Watch Me Flash was euthanized due to the seriousness of her injury."

I was talking to a friend of mine here that races two horses. We were talking about Barbaro having his bandages removed. He said he is incredible and so are hs owners, they believed in him.

He said you have to give credit to Edgar, the Jackson's NBC and the crew at the track. He has dealt with NBC and said they are just the best there is.One of his just raced at Gulfstream Monday and she came in 5th.

Maybe we should put a question up on the discussion board - Do you secretly watch Derby 132, if so how often?

What a smart boy you are, to know what you need to do for yourself to reach the ultimate goal. Your mommy and daddy are such great people to have kept the faith and never given up on you.

So happy for the good report on Barbaro. We have all got used to all the good reports but really he is a miracle in progress. Months ago we would have given anything to have this report today, we love you buddy!

Looking back through my notes of House reps that I spoke with regarding S1915, I totally agree with C.Jaffe and others who have posted in the last couple days. I feel we need a plan, many of the house representatives I spoke to last year voted against us because they don't know the facts - I think we need to make a professional statement to present to them - number of rescue organizations, all the fundraisers, horses we have saved, addressing Wyeth, foster homes, etc.
I pray we can all keep working together to be ready for next year.

Hope Felix is having a better day, prayers for all the horses who have been saved or need saved.

Julie- thanks for thinking of Over Enough - he is doing great, running around with his friends. He had a very dangerous treatment for his ethmoid tumor but with prayers came through it all and is feeling much better. Best of holidays to you also.

    ##### BARB M and DEBBIE L.A. You gals are totally on the right track. Maybe several of us working together can compile all this info, keep it updated and post it in a printable format on one of the threads so that we all have access to it.
We should try to get totals on how many folks visit this site in an average day; how much has been donated by the FOBs to the various organizations: NBC, HSMO, Shiloh, Day's End, etc. and try to get an estimate as to how many folks are actively contributing to these various groups on a regular basis. And of course, how many horses have been rescued as a result! And maybe while were at it, a list of key contacts--Wyeth, Congressional reps, etc. and examples of letters we can personalize, print and mail to keep the pressure on!

    BELIEVE!

Hay FFOBs and Horse Lovers Everywhere!

Thanks for the feedback! Since I have the Norton Internet Security, and it in effect said "WHOA!" it sounds like it will be a good idea to keep the status quo until the bugs are cleared out of the IE7! I don't think that Comcast is leading me wrong, but this is my sister's expensive computer, and I don't want any problems, so I will wait until Microsoft and Norton get everything squared between them.!

Alex, today has been pure bliss. I can barely fathom how far Barbaro's come. And how far we as a group have come. One thing you can say about us: we're loyal. I have to believe that in addition to the care lavished on Barbaro by his remarkable owners - the Jacksons - and Michael Matz, and Edgar, and the vets, and the nurses, and the brilliant Dr. Richardson, the tidal wave of love, prayer and hope have also done their magic.

I'm going to celebrate with some carrot cake!

We have all been in it together. Barbaro has stamina, the people around him have stamina, and the FOB's have stamina, too. Props to everybody here!

Alex, What great, great news, so glad you were there to take notes on the update. Glad I wasn't the only sentimental fool getting misty eyed at the good news today... remembering like others about the way it was last July. Remembering that friends of horses are friends forever. Remembering that making a pact to stand by a friend, two legs or four, wings, gills, whatever, means we're there for the whole story.

God bless all the good people here tonight & their furry friends. May they eat well and dream of safety, freedom and comfort. May each animal in need find an open and willing home and a heart to match. May all of us continue to share the news, the joys and the challenges of life among all creatures great and small. May the miracles continue.

It is, by far, my favorite place to learn not only about Barbaro, but about horse racing, horse health and so many issues facing all those who love horses like I do. My other reason for commenting today is to say that there are still Barbaro models available at many retailers and they are wonderful! I have mine on top of the tv so I get to look at him all the time - Breyer did a great job of capturing Barbaro's beauty.

    #### Alex, thank you so much for this meaty posting! I hope that the symbolism of "12/13" isn't lost on members of the Senate. Today truly is the Day of the Horse. You answered a lot of the technical questions that I had about the new shoe.
To Cora: Loved the adult day care center story.
To Judy in Manchester: Welcome, fellow Nutmegger, to the Barbaro Nation.
To Harriette: What wit - excellent poem.
To Barb M. - Great news about Over Enough's progress.
To Renee: Sorry that you are still feeling so bad.
To Carol and Robin Miller: "And here comes Barbaro!" I say that out loud around the house whenever I am feeling full of myself. As long as I live, I'll forever associate the word "sublime" with this amazing horse. Thanks for posting the link to the videos.
To all FsOB: One of the US Senators who is a Democrat had a stroke today. (May this gentleman fully recover; I apologize for forgetting his name.) His recovery could determine which party controls the leadership of the Senate when the new session begins in Jan. Apparently the Governor in South Dakota is a Republican. The South Dakota Governor would appoint a new Senator if the incumbent Sen. who had the stroke cannot complete his term. This could mean that the Republicans would again control the leadership positions in the Senate. I'm sure that more news will be available on the Internet ASAP.
Peace and good evening, friends. RMH ####

    ##### Excerpt from article in pryordailytimes.com:

    Coburn of Ag spending bill

U.S. Senator Tom Coburn, M.D. (R-OK) released the following statement concerning the fiscal year 2007 agriculture appropriations bill:

". . .Also, Oklahoma farmers should know it is likely H.R. 503, a bill to end the practice of horse slaughter, likely will be attached to any agriculture spending bill considered by the Senate.

“I oppose any efforts to ban horse slaughtering as a last alternative. Though I don’t want to see any horses being slaughtered, it must remain an option for horses that aren’t granted proper care and for which all other options have been exhausted,” Dr. Coburn said

The American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Quarterhorse Association and the American Association of Equine Practitioners oppose the horse bill. Under the passage of H.R. 503, as many as 90,000 horses could be abandoned."

Yeah, right Tom. . .all 90,000 horses that might have been slaughtered will be roaming the streets. . .

I can just imagine how in awe she is of NBC and how thrilled she was to be there with you, posting banners. Talk about a once-in-a-lifetime event!

Hi to all the new people! It is so good to see you post here. Post often!

    ####

Carol..You are welcome I have a whole new respect for Senator Ensign since his very vocal and aggressive position on anti-slaughter has been made known to all of us. My DB is very pleasantly surprised as well, having said to me many times that John Ensign is NOT the guy you would have picked to go into politics. He's such a nice guy (tongue in cheek here) He is very proud to know the senator. Our senator here in CO who is also a veterinarian is HOPEFULLY swinging to our side, after being a very strong opponent. Please keep your fingers crossed.

WOW again. We have had two outstanding bits of news in the past few days. TWR will remain open after our benefactors holiday, and our Wonder Horse continues on his grand mission of healing. Life is good

    Love to all

    Way to go Barbaro!

What wonderful news from Dr Richardson and Mr and Mrs Jackson today at the news conference. You light up our lives and give us so much to be thankful for. Your spirit and will to survive inspire all of us. We are all better for knowing you and being a small part of your life and all other horses.

Alex, thank you so much for all you do for all of us. There is so much that WILL be accomplished in the coming year in honor of the Boss Horse.

Mr and Mrs Jackson, thank you for taking the time to keep us posted about this wonderful horse. The Anti-Slaughter bill WILL be passed this year.

Thank you Alex, for the delightful account of your attendance at the Press Conference. It almost felt as if I were there too.

So thankful for the good news, and that the shoe was placed on yesterday. By now they know how he is tolerating it.

I will be happy when he can come out of the ICU, but I pray that he will stay safe, where ever he goes. I hope it will be near Mr. & Mrs. Jackson, as I know they will continue to visit him.

I am apprehensive about his coming out of the hospital too soon, but I know that I am not knowledgeable about what is best for Barbaro. Dr. Richardson is most qualified to determine what he needs.

That is what House Rep. Jo Bonner wrote me. We have to show them where the 90,000 horses will go. Have to find horse rescues here in my state to prove to him that is not the case. We need to better prepared this year. Get all the information together, and be ready to fight

Message to Tom Coburn, ND: With all due respect, check your math on horses who'll need homes WHEN Horse Slaughter legislation passes.

Some 40,000 American horses are stolen each year. Most of those end up at slaughter. Say 30,000. Nobody checks if they're stolen so the exact # is a guess.

So at least a third of the horses now slaughtered won't need a home. BECAUSE THEY ALREADY HAVE HOMES. And owners who'd be grateful to have them back. Horse slaughter sure enough is a property rights issue, just like some said who voted against it. It's a violation of private property rights for thousands of people whose horses are stolen each year. Yup, check your math, the answer is right there: This legislation is fair and it is the right thing to do to protect private property rights.

    Lynda AND All,

    Dr. R said:

"As soon as we believe he can be managed as well somewhere else, he will go somewhere else," Richardson said.

Can the place in Kentucky manage Barbaro's needs the way NBC can or would he go someplace else until, perhaps, his right leg gets stronger and left hoof grows a bit more? Can they provide all the individual attention our boy needs? I worry about him begin away from him mommy/daddy and the ever so devoted, Dr. R!!!

Can anyone please address who has more knowledge than I?

So good to see the names of so many FOB vets.

Forgive my hollering. Just read the update and I am so inspired by the report of the press conference.I know we are not accross the finish line but Barbaro is running this race like the champ he is.

I am remaining vigilant--will light a candle cindilou, thank you-- tonight I celebrate the strides our champ has made so far, so........donkey dancing in the living room.

Posted by: Marky at December 14, 2006 1:27 AM

Daphnee, it will all depend on what Dr R means by that. Does he mean when Barbaro is all better? I know Dr R wants him there while his hoof grows out. The problem is that even when his hoof grows out it will not be normal. Also his broken leg will not be normal. The fetlock and pastern joints are fused and I am sure that with both cases he will have to have somebody wherever he goes that can keep an eye out on him that can tell if something is wrong. I am sure somebody at the KY Horse park is there like that, or if he goes to a Stallion complex, they all have their own on-site vets.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at December 14, 2006 1:28 AM

    HOW WONDERFUL ARE THESE WORDS.......

His departure from here depends on many things. In my mind's eye, he can leave in the not so distant future. He weighs 1,132 pounds, which goes up and down a little like most hospitalized horses will do. He's in good flesh and eating very well. His vital signs and blood work are excellent, and his coat looks beautiful. As soon as we believe he can be managed as well somewhere else, he will go somewhere else."

Meant to ask earlier....Alex, any new photos of Barbaro yet? Is Sabina well enough to take on a bit of work? I sure would love to see that right hind without any bandage at all I've read somewhere that the leg doesn't appear quite normal and is a bit bowed? I read so much stuff I can't keep it all straight anymore. It seems rather natural that the limb is not quite the way it used to look as he hasn't been working out. Kind of like my "right hind" looked after I broke it. It wasn't very pretty. Muscles atrophied, tendons tight and generally it looked pretty gnarly. He won't be running to any great extent in the future, but due to the fact that he was extremely fit and well developed prior to the injury, it won't take a whole lot of training for that leg to regain a good deal of muscle mass and strength. Not to mention that I'd like to see how well rounded he has become :)

    Later, y'all

HERES INFO REGARDING THE SPIL AND BREAKDOWN AT CALDER AS I STATED ON MONDAY...

    Bridgmohan returns after spill

Leading rider Jermaine Bridgmohan returned to action Wednesday, 48 hours after he walked away unscathed from a frightening spill in Monday's finale. Bridgmohan was aboard even-money Watch Me Flash, who broke down while on the lead nearing midstretch of the bottom-priced maiden claiming dash. Two other riders, Ray Fuentes and Jeffrey Sanchez, were also thrown to the ground when their mounts could not avoid Watch Me Flash.

Bridgmohan and Fuentes walked off the track under their own power. Sanchez was taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons. He suffered a gash over his right eye, which was swollen shut and prevented him from riding Wednesday.

Watch Me Flash was euthanized as a result of her injuries.

Urgent stories, news updates, etc. can be "featured" on the Home Page, which functions like an online "newspaper", yet the articles are available for viewing for the whole month, like in a magazine...

There are many horse loving people across America, and beyond, who have "NO" clue what is "really" going on in these "lots" and "houses" of "horror"! "If" they were given the opportunity to really "know" what is going on... many would join up.

Okay, let's at least get the blanket up to your tummy. Yes, I know you've had lots of treats today. While you're laying in your straw, pleased with yourself for keeping a REALLY good secret, don't forget to feel proud of yourself Honey. You have worked sooo hard for a day just like today. I am so incredibly proud of you Barbaro.

When you do sleep, dream only sweet dreams. Let the healing continue through the night and strength will carry you through your day tomorrow. Remember I love you and please say prayers of thanks for all of the loved ones in your life. Their love and support have helped guide you to your goal today.

Please sleep Barbaro. I'm in love with you. Good night...XXOOx

So glad Carol shared the CBS video. In it, they're saying they hope Barbaro maintains his spirit. Don't worry! He has!

Alex, that report was fantastic. You should be at the press conference. This web site is press; its message reaches so many of us. I also want to say thank you for the humble act of hanging up signs for our beloved Barbaro. What an act of goodness that is.

When my husband came home tonight and saw me at the computer he automatically asked, "How is he." I mean, what else would I be doing on the computer? So great to tell him word for word all that beautiful good news. And there was so much of it.

But here is the thing that makes me cry with joy as much as Barbaro's continuing physical improvement: Dr. Richardson said Barbaro was Happy. I have long prayed that he would be healed, and that he would be happy. This is the ultimate. Barbaro is happy.

So what ever his future holds, I pray, fervently, that everyone who cares for him will always know how special he is. That they will work to ensure his happiness.

Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Jackson, for his tender care.

Good evening to the dear and joyous Barbaro Nation.

Quite the press conference today. Thank you Alex for providing us with all that information. You really are so wonderful for all that you do for us to keep us informed and connected to all things Barbaro. Your dedication and commitment are amazing. So again, thank you very, very much!

Well Mr. Big Boss Horse, they were talking about you again today! Were your ears burning? I like how Dr. Richardson noted how smart of a horse you are, and how your intelligence has aided you in your recovery. Well, that's no surprise to any of your FOB family. We all know how smart you are, not to mention courageous, determined and oh so adorable!

You have forever captured my heart beautiful boy, and I'm pulling for you every minute of each passing day.

May tonight bring you another night of healing, peaceful rest. You remain in my thoughts and prayers and heart. I love you Barbaro.

    The miracle continues...

Good Evening to all FFOBs and Horse Lovers Everywhere!

Still looking for health updates on a few feline furpersons! They are Felix, Big Dude, and Big Dudette aka Funny Face!

Also, Big Dude aka Bdude! What happened to your website? Did I not remember the name correctly, or what! Can you please tell me how you and your sister are doing, and re-give me your site so I can see what you two good kitties look like!? Thanks a bunch!

Just lit a few more candles for a few "people", just in case my power goes out in the next storm. Yep! We are expecting a powerful windstorm through our area (Puget Sound in WA) by this time tomorrow, if not sooner! This thing is said to be packing winds of up to 70MPH! Because our ground is saturated, and fir tree roots are very shallow, this storm will be too strong even for underground utilities!

Well, gotta go, but will check back in a short. Laura S. from Snohomish, WA

Kathryn in OK really said it all, thank you, that Barbaro is happy. HAPPY. Total Word. Above all the other good news, that this horse with the flashing teeth and undefeated record who hung in the sling all those frequent flier miles, after 7 months in hospital, that horse, is happy. Such good news.

Good night, again, FOBs, here's hoping you are all happy, too. Peace ~

Susan E, I am so, so sorry. So sorry that I am in tears.

Felix will more than likely give you a sign when he is ready. Both my boys let me know. It was a blessing really.

Yesterday, my Beloved Thaddeus sent me a sign. Cecil, my kitty who happens to look like him, was laying on the bed with one arm WAAAYYY outstretched. I laughed because Thaddeus used to do that. I said, "That's my Thaddeus buddy"--and, this is no lie, Cecil totally winked at me. I almost fell off my chair...

Felix will always be with you, you have given him part of your soul with your love.

    Susan E.,

I am so sorry to hear that Felix is not doing at all well. I have already lighted a bunch of candles for him. Please keep us posted!

Regarding moving: I have been considering moving to Hawaii, but am not sure if I can afford it on a GS-04 Step 10 retirement pension. If anyone in Hawaii can advise me on how to do this, I'll happily go there at the drop of a snowflake! I used to live there in the early 1960s and loved it, but I was a kid 11-14 years old and my dad was in the Navy at that time, which meant free government housing. I am definitely sick of the weather here, and it isn't even winter yet! Any job openings in Hawaii for a retired US Government clerk? Please let me know the answers to all my questions ASAP!

Thanks a bunch from Laura S. in dreary Snohomish, WA!

Steve Haskin actually wrote the best article , I think!

Since being sent to New Bolton immediately following his catastrophic injury suffered in the May 20 Preakness Stakes (gr. I), Barbaro has been subjected to anesthesia nine times – the initial surgery, seven cast changes, including the one where the plate in his leg was removed, and finally when his the cast was removed. During that time, he also survived a near-fatal case of laminitis, from which he still is recovering.

"It still brings tears to my eyes," said Gretchen Jackson, who owns and bred Barbaro with her husband Roy. "It's just remarkable what's happened, and remarkable that the horse seems to have turned and is going to make it. We still can't believe it. Even when he had gotten extremely thin, his coat was brilliant and he never lost that look in his eye. With all he's been through, he always looked out at the world saying, 'Here I am. I'm still here.' We're just so proud of him."

His had me in tears, with Mrs. Jackson.

Barbaro...Hey Barbaro...do you know we love you?

We are so proud, always, to hear wonderful news about you...And Mr. Alex, is just so special, he really does not know what he means to us.

And...Tim, we are thinking of you, too.

There was a heated discussion on Bill O'Reilly last night about illegals working in a meat processor plant in Iowa...

Food for Thought: Do you think there may be illegal workers in these slaughter houses?

Barbaro, You are so fortunate to have lovely owners. Mr. and Mrs. Jackson is real, inside and out...and they love you...

We may be slowing down somewhat during the holidays but our spirit and drive is just like you Barbaro...we are gearing up for a fight just like you have shown us...to shut these slaughter houses down...to speak for the ones who cannot speak, and save our horses.

    ######
My heart goes out to the little pit bull puppy accused of chewing off nine toes of a little baby. Parents asleep on the floor? Something is very wrong with this picture, and the little puppy will suffer.

Animal lovers...we have to wake up and show people all animals are responsibility, they give us unconditional love, and we need to respond, respectfully.

    ######

Let us not forget we are united as one, and duty calls for us to march forward, not to look back, and start the new year refresh, and to give our very best and save our horses..for Barbaro, For Mrs. Jackson, and for us.

    Have a lovely day..

I was thinking the same thing when I read the story, and it is VERY wrong. That puppy will be "blamed" more than others would, simply because of his breed. That's another big WRONG.

There's no such thing as a bad dog, but there are plenty of "bad" owners.

Yesterday, Federal Immigration Agents arrested 1282 illegals working in slaughter plants in 6 states in "Operation Wagon Train". I would be willing to bet that without illegal immigrant labor, the 3 horse slaughter plants would have to SHUT DOWN. How can we get INS agents in those plants to make similar arrests?

    Good Morning, FOB's!

    ###
Susan E - prayers for you and the beautiful Felix.

Alex, you are quite the roving reporter. I agree with you - the news about Barbaro not having the bandage on the right hind would have been what I wanted to know about...now to get the left hind back in shape...Grow, Hoof, Grow!!!

    ###
Skyler, safe journey home. Now you need to manifest your dream home that is right next to Fair Hill...:)

    ###
Have finished the first draft of the latest children's story. This will be dedicated not only to Windy and Stormy but to all rescue facilities and those who build their lives on compassion.

Its been almost 7 months and look at all that has happened to us. As each day brings us further into the holiday season, we can give thanks for everything - the tears as well as the laughter - and that beautiful quiet when the stars shine ever so brightly to remind us what this season truly means.

ALL MY LOVE SWEET BARBARO!!! I am anticipating the arrival of my Barbaro Beanie any day now, can't wait!!!

Good Morning Big Guy! How is the new shoe working out. So proud of you. In some ways I hate to hear that you are leaving New Bolton soon. They are able to keep such a good eye on you and know immediately what to do should something go wrong. Also, I hope you aren't going too far from your friends and owners as they have been such a big part of your recovery. I know you would truly miss your fresh picked grass each day from your number one fan and friend Mrs.J. But to hear how well you are doing is absolutely wonderful. Keep it up Big Guy. Continue to stay happy and most of all healthy and pain free. I feel like you are a member of my own family leaving for a long trip as for some reason I feel sad about your going and possibly not having our regular updates, but like all things that too was bound to come to an end. Know how much you are loved by sooooooooooooo many people all over the country and the world. Many hugs and smooches on that beuatiful nose of your. Love you so much buddy.

Alex, I am stunned and so grateful at your report about the press conference. Can Barbaro have progressed this much to maybe be out of there soon?

I join anyone else who is expelling nachos over this!!!!

Saw the Barnbuddies on "Today," but they sure could have spent more time on them. They were SO adorable!!

Sadly, are you all following the health of the senator Johnson? Apart from the concerns for his health, there is a very real possibility the Senate might go back into Republican control. What does that do to our horses? Please, God, don't let us have to deal with another Frist type.

Visiting here is such a roller coaster of emotions. Just trying to hang on...

I can't believe they brought those adorable animals from Missouri for two minutes on the Today Show. They banter with each other to kill time and then when they could use time on these cute critters, they don't. I will never understand television. Well, they were cute and what a wonderful Christmas present for the " hard to shop for" person. Their little Christmas hats were sooooo festive!! Way to go Longmeadow Ranch. Rosemary & Jane,
I watched Today for the folks from LongMeadow -- I was very disappointed at the almost disrespectful attitude of the TV folks. I hope that the local audience showed more appreciation. That is a long way to bring all those sweet creatures just to have about 10 seconds of airtime. Maybe there will be more followup on the NBC website. But I'm glad a few of us from the FOBs were on hand to watch!

What a mess if the Repubs get the majority back. The slaughter bill would STILL have to go back through the house, wouldn't it? Because the majority there has changed? And then it would come back to the Senate. But Frist won't be here. I don't know who's next in line for Senate leader if it goes Republican---does anybody here know?

    ##### Check this out! Looks like a great alternative to auctions!!

New Site Matches Donated Horses with Potential Adopters

Illinois horsewoman Meggan Hill-McQueeney has started a new company, All Heart Inc., and is launching an extraordinary concept called DonateMyHorse.com--the web site for prospective donors and adopters.

At DonateMyHorse.com, equestrians can post information on horses available for adoption, and potential adopters can view photos and information on horses needing good homes across the country.
An advanced therapeutic riding instructor and manager of a cutting horse breeding operation, Hill-McQueeney created DonateMyHorse.com to facilitate the match of donor and adopter. All text ads are free and packages with various prices are available for different viewing options. From mounted police prospects to potential therapeutic riding horses across the nation, DonateMyHorse.com makes the adoption of horses needing good homes both easy and successful--for donors and adopters alike.

"There are so many people who need help finding the right home for their horse," Hill-McQueeney said. "Some horses definitely deserve the opportunity to have successful second careers."

Hill-McQueeney launched the new venture after working with multiple equestrians who were searching for a place to donate their horses.

"I realized that an online matching program would be a simple solution to what can often be a frustrating problem," said Hill-McQueeney. "Now the process is quick, easy, and effortless."

Although several organizations exist to facilitate the adoption of rescued horses (such as PMURescue, the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, the Standardbred Retirement Foundation, and others), All Heart Inc.'s extraordinary web site is the first and only specifically designed to pair potential donors directly with the current horse owner.

"DonateMyHorse.com eliminates the middleman and gives the owner control over the adoption situation," Hill-McQueeney said.

Visitors to DonateMyHorse.com can view profiles including photos and videos of horses in need of good homes. Profile information includes the horse's state, a contact number, age of the horse, sex, breed, color, discipline, height, registration, temperament, previous career, medical concerns, and current condition.

    For more information see www.DonateMyHorse.com.

    Cool Update on Round Pond!!!
    http://rockportharbor.com/forum/index.php?topic=4939.0

Betsy and I visited Round Pond and Draft Age at Palm Meadows Training Center on Tuesday morning. They looked like a zillion bucks. Michael's team takes such good care of the horses. They were shining like the stars they are and are going to be. Round Pond put in a strong one mile gallop with Peter up. Pam was on Draft Age. He is getting to be more of a handful and they are going to let him do more now. He should be breezing in the next few weeks. Round Pond is mixing things up with jogs some days and gallops others. She gets turned out once or twice a week in the round pen. This mix is perfect in that it does not let her all the way down from the high peak of fitness she was on for the championship race. I think at this point we are considering the Rampart at Gulfstream in early March as the prep race for the Apple Blossom. This is tenative and subject to change.

    Cora,
Is it possible to expel other snacks? That "expelling my nachos" thing cracks me up, but I don't really care for nachos. So could non-nacho snackers "expel their popcorn or their chips?"

I would hate to be grammatically incorrect. Please advise.

Alex, thank you as always! Your comments and insight are SO appreciated. And I am so thankful for our beloved Bobby's continued progress. May the angels among us keep him safe and continue his path to recovery. Rock on, Sweet Prince.

I don't want to leave a huge post here, but I'll give you guys a teaser and then post it in "horse slaughter issues" on the forum. I've been doing some research on the AVMA and their stand in support of horse slaughter. I'm hoping you'll follow my lead and contact them.

I suggest we ask the good doctors to check out "humane" slaughter videos on www.hsus.org.

I also suggest we cite this stat: There has been no documented rise in abuse and neglect cases in California since the state banned horse slaughter for human consumption in 1998. There was no documented rise in Illinois during closure of the state's only horse slaughter plant in 2002 until its reopening in 2004. (www.saponline.org)

Responsible stewardship of companion animals must be advocated by WE, the stewards. If over-breeding is going on, it must be discontinued. And when our beloved companion animals become old or unwell, we have the responsibility to let them leave this world peacefully, not terrified.

The argument is also used that the cost of euthanasia is too "expensive" for many horse owners. I strongly dispute that. Again, from www.saponline.org : The average cost of having a horse humanely euthanized and safely disposing of the animal's carcass is approximately $225, while the average monthly cost of keeping a horse is approximately $200.

Similar issues would be dealt with by an owner of a large dog. I maintain that if you have the money to own a horse, horses, or other companion animals, you are ethically responsible financially and emotionally for the care of the animal, up to an including the peaceful termination of it's life when/if necessary.

Contact information and position statements from the AVMA will be on my post on the forum. Please take a look at it and consider joining me in this effort.

    ##### Susan E and Lor in PA:

DAWN in The Big O, thanks for the post about the online horse adoption. If you haven't already, can you post that on Forum?
    #####
Sorry--I'm "locked out" of the Forum when I'm at work, so if someone can post my earlier info on the horse adoption website, I'd be much obliged! Otherwise, I can do it late tonight. Also, VERY frustrating that I can't read your info on a response to the AVMA, Lor! I'll check it out tonight. You might also want to include the AAEP on this (American Assoc of Equine Practitioners) since they're officially "opposed" as well.

    Thanks, all!

    Re: Missouri horses
I just checked the HSMO updates on the MO horses and all are contining to improve. I'm particularly attached to Mama and anxious for her foal to be born. All those poor babies, I bet they are all so happy to have some loving care.

I managed to miss the Today Show with the Mo rescue horses; any chance there will be a video clip available? Anyone know? Can find? Thanks -

The current issue of Horse Illustrated has a nice piece on the Mo accident and aftermath; also a featured letter of the month from a reader, noting that the incident was woefully insufficiently covered by the press vis-a-vis how slaughter is NOT euthanasia. CJ in Hammond IN

Barbaro you trend setter you! No bandage or anything on your newly healed right leg and a new shoe for your left. I know what you're thinking - Michael Jackson (no relation to Mr. and Mrs. Jackson) made wearing one glove a fashion statement . . . now you, with just one shoe . . . don't even try to moonwalk until Dr. R tells you to!

Watched Today for Longmeadow -- I was very disappointed, long way to bring all those sweet creatures just to have about 10 seconds of airtime. You missed very little!

    Cora,
Is it possible to expel other snacks? That "expelling my nachos" thing cracks me up, but I don't really care for nachos. So could non-nacho snackers "expel their popcorn or their chips?"

I would hate to be grammatically incorrect. Please advise.

Hope you don't mind that I am chiming in here, since your query was directed to Cora. Because I started it all, I thought I should jump in.

It has to be "expelling nachos," because the phrase is a parody of "Kvelling mit Nachas." Any other snack food (such as popcorn) would not almost-rhyme with Nachas and thus would not do the trick. Etymology of expelling nachos - Susan E. started it as a joke/parody on my frequent use of "Kvelling mit Nachas" - a Yiddish phrase meaning, feeling joy at the good things accomplished by or befalling a loved one - and it mushroomed, so to speak.

It is strictly metaphorical/allegorical, so that you can be "expelling nachos" IN SPIRIT even though you may be eating popcorn at the time.

    Hope this helps.
