Good Morning FOBs....Today is the day with Eddie Kilroy. I just heard him talking about it on XM's Willie's Place. I didn't hear the whole thing having just go out of the shower but he was saying something about the pro-slaughter, BIG MONEY and he and Willie Nelson receiving threats. The he played the song OLD HORSE. I've begun my day in tears. Please call.

I've exchanged emails with Eddie Kilroy about a collaborative effort scheduled for Monday 12/4, the day the Senators return. I've asked him to rally his pro S1915 listeners over the next few days and we'll have our own Nat'l Call In Day. Of course, for us every day is a call in day but if we can increase the numbers Monday it will remind the Senators that we have not forgotten the mission. The strategy remains the same unless otherwise directed by Shelley & Debra. I told Eddie I would provide names & numbers of our targeted Senators. SO PLEASE TREAT MONDAY AS A DAY TO CALL IN DEBTS, BEG, PLEAD, TRADE FAVORS, whatever it takes so we can tally some really big numbers.

Here’s the update on 10-20-06 from the Missouri Humane Society announcing Darlin’s death!

Darlin (10-20-06) We are very sad to report that, at the recommendation of her veterinarian, Darlin was humanely euthanized last night. Her injuries were very severe and she was not progressing as we had hoped. Her right rear hoof was sloughing off making it difficult for her to stand and she had suffered permanent damage to her spine. The veterinarian assessed that she was in a great deal of pain and that she would not be able to recover from her injuries. When we heard this grave news, our hearts sank. We had been hopeful that Darlin could pull through and recover fully. We want to express our sincere gratitude to the veterinarians and staff who lovingly and expertly cared for Darlin and the Horse Heroes who supported her treatment during this difficult time.

Thank you for being a Horse Hero!
You've given some great horses a second chance.

Good morning Barbaro, Alex and all FOBs.

I know we've all been working very hard on getting our senators to get this bill to the Senate floor for a vote and we will continue to do that this week as well. Like all of you, I want nothing more than to see this bill pass the Senate. But considering that our time together as a group is growing limited, I thought maybe I should ask . . . do we have a "plan B"?

I hope and pray we won't need it, but what if the worst happens and the bill doesn't make the floor before recess? Should we consider a plan B? Have we ever taken any steps to reach out to our state governors? If the Senate should fail us, should we consider reaching out to individual state governors to try to get more states to pass laws that ban the slaughter, transport to slaughter or sale of any horse for slaughter. Maybe since only two states have slaughterhouses, we might be able to put our strength into getting those two states to ban horse slaughter. This could possibly force the shut down of the existing slaughterhouses. Then, the other states may follow simply out of not wanting new slaughterhouses in their backyards.

Again, maybe this has already been proposed and I just missed it. If that's the case, I apologize for wasting time with this post. If not, what do you guys think? I'm still working, hoping and praying for the senate to pass the bill. I just thought while we were all still together that we might take the time to discuss a "plan b".

Nurturing Medical Staff Keeps Barbaro Alive

KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. -- In the middle of the night, when a rhythmic routine settles over the intensive care unit at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center, nurse Jamie DeFazio marvels at the patient in her care.

"Sometimes it's just the two of us sitting there," she said. "He's easy when he's sleeping. You can pet him, and he's not the macho guy, and you say, 'Horse, do you even know how many people care about you?' I think he knows he's special, sitting there one-on-one with him."

Five months after he shattered his leg moments into the Preakness Stakes, Barbaro no longer looks like the majestic animal whose quicksilver blend of speed and stamina won the Kentucky Derby and made him an overwhelming favorite to capture racing's Triple Crown.

Yet, Barbaro has overcome enormous odds thanks to some of the most advanced medical care ever given to a horse -- and to a small group of doctors and nurses who have fed, washed, walked and otherwise nurtured him.

When Barbaro arrived at New Bolton, he had massive injuries to his rear right leg -- a fractured cannon, sesamoid and long pastern bone. Most horses would have been euthanized. Instead, a complex, painstaking operation followed that included the insertion of a titanium plate and 27 screws in an effort to stabilize the leg and save his life.

The lower half of his leg remains encased in a large, heavily taped fiberglass cast. His left rear hoof, removed in surgery in July after the onset of a life-threatening case of laminitis, a debilitating inflammation, continues a creeping regeneration that will take at least six more months. A protective boot over the stump recently was replaced by heavy bandages.

Largely confined to a stall in the intensive care unit, the bay colt's battle for life has left visible marks. His muscular frame has atrophied. His left side is scarred from blistering during surgery and a bulbous sore from lying down when he couldn't stand. When he is led out for daily late-afternoon grazing, he lurches gingerly. Still, the staff at New Bolton is hopeful.

"He was a tremendous physical specimen," said Dean Richardson, the chief surgeon who performed the surgery the day after Barbaro broke down and has shepherded his recovery. "For all his problems, he's in excellent physical condition."

An Unforeseen Buzz

DeFazio, who grew up in Kennett Square and went to camps at New Bolton as a child, was watching the Preakness on television the afternoon of May 20 when she saw Barbaro pull up at Pimlico Race Course. "I thought, 'Oh, my gosh, it's over, and it's going to be devastating for our community, especially since I live" near Barbaro's owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson, she said.

DeFazio, 27, works the midnight to 5 a.m. shift at New Bolton every other week. She was scheduled to work that night. After the race ended, DeFazio took a nap -- missing further coverage of the tragedy on the evening newscasts -- then got ready for work. When she arrived at New Bolton at 10 p.m., she learned that the horse in her care would be Barbaro.

"When I got in and saw him, I was just awestruck," she said. "He looked like an athlete in his prime. I half wanted to cry and half was excited. You didn't know how to explain it: He's a horse -- one of our patients -- but he's Barbaro, and he won the Derby, and he's all over the news, and he's right in front of me, and I need to make sure he makes it through the night."

Much of the country also was fixated on Barbaro's plight. While many people just wanted to see the Derby winner survive, others debated whether he was only being saved for a chance to earn millions in stud fees. The Jacksons, who had never seen one of their horses suffer a serious injury, said they would have gone to the same great lengths for even the lowliest gelding.

The first few weeks of Barbaro's stay were extremely hectic at New Bolton, one of the two top equine clinics in the country, as television trucks filled the parking lot and reporters camped for days in the hospital lobby.

"It took some getting used to," said Kasey McCafferty, 27, a nurse in the neo-natal intensive care unit. "When you came in the driveway, you had to show your ID. We've had other big stories, but nothing that continued on for so long."

Even now, the hospital lobby remains crowded with giant get-well cards covered with children's signatures. Care packages arrive daily with cookies, chocolates and treats for the staff and carrots for their famous patient.

"It's kind of odd because we've gotten used to it now, but it's very surreal," said Liberty Getman, a third-year resident physician who fills in for Richardson when he is elsewhere. "You can't go anywhere wearing a New Bolton shirt. You can't go to the grocery store or anywhere without being stopped and asked how he is. When you leave here, it becomes more obvious."

The intensive care unit has eight stalls with wooden doors and cinderblock walls. Five are used for neo-natal care in the spring, when most thoroughbred foals are delivered, and Richardson said "it is totally jam-packed" at that time. Now, however, in the fall, it is cool and quiet. Barbaro has his own stall in a corner.

The building has a carefully monitored room temperature and people must wear designated scrubs and coveralls and dip their shoes in a disinfectant wash upon entering and exiting.

Richardson or, more often, Getman, checks on Barbaro each day at 6 a.m. to see how he got through the night and to change his bandages. Four times a day, nurses feed him alfalfa, grass, hay and grain enriched with supplements. They monitor vital signs twice daily and give him antibiotics for his left foot, which, though not infected, remains an open wound.

Barbaro is groomed every day and receives visitors, his extended human family. Gretchen Jackson brings freshly cut grass from her nearby farm in West Grove. Trainer Michael Matz visits regularly. Richardson occasionally allows Matz into the stall to groom Barbaro and apply front bandages. Matz wraps the legs just as he did when the horse was an undefeated 3-year-old with Triple Crown potential. Edgar Prado, his jockey, makes it down from New York from time to time.

The highlight of the horse's day comes when Richardson leads him outdoors to graze.

At night, the lights are dimmed and Barbaro and the other I.C.U. residents receive periodic checks. The Derby winner rarely stirs, Richardson said. "He's a good sleeper."

A Model Patient, Mostly

Like many top-class racehorses, Barbaro is alert and inquisitive. On a recent afternoon, he flirted with a cow penned at the hospital. Barbaro only backed away when his new playmate attempted to administer a slobbering bovine lick to his face.

"He has a lot of personality," Richardson said. "Sometimes he's a firebrand, jumping up and down and trying to rip your head off, and sometimes he's very sweet. He's very complete."

Barbaro has gained respect at the hospital for his perseverance, though he has at times drawn the line. He loathed the masseuses brought in to work muscles that were knotted because of a lack of exercise. He fussed and bit and threatened until they decided to leave him alone.

"He's like a crotchety old man in a hospital," DeFazio said. "You come in with the medicines, and he says, 'What are you doing in here?' He makes faces at you. I wouldn't say he's cranky, but mouthy."

Richardson, who early on said the chances of Barbaro's survival were no better than 50-50, continues to be cautious about his recovery. "You've still got a long way to go to know whether he'll grow a foot that will allow him to be a stallion or live in a field," he said. "We're better than I thought we'd be in early July when he foundered, but it brings you back to earth when you think about it every day."

No figures have been released on the cost of his treatment the past five months, but it reportedly has run into the tens of thousands of dollars.

Although Barbaro's racing career is over and his ability to stand at stud is uncertain, he has been bringing in money -- for the hospital. Even before he had arrived, New Bolton administrators had begun to compile a wish list for its future.

The hospital, Executive Director Corrine Sweeney said, has been delivering "21st century medicine in a 20th century facility." Now there is the Barbaro Fund, which began with an anonymous donor pledging $500,000 and has raised approximately $1.2 million. The money will go toward the prevention and cure of laminitis, medicine and new equipment.

"It will immediately benefit the patients," Sweeney said. "No one wanted this tragedy to occur, but once it did occur an awful lot of good things happened."

And they continue to happen to Barbaro, the odds-defying patient who happens to be a star.

"I will be able to look back," McCafferty said, "and say to my children and grandchildren, 'I worked with Barbaro, the Kentucky Derby winner.' "

I will begin my emails in a minute. My husband will be faxing and calling at work, and I will call when I get home from school this afternoon.
Someone posted information from the Washington Post that said the GOP officials were not going to do anything these last few days--no spending bills,etc. I was very discouraged! But then I sat down at my computer and wrote my faxes and got ready for today and tomorrow. NOTHING IS GOING TO STOP US!! I am more determined than ever to make sure I do everything I can to help with this bill. Big Boss Horse and all of you--the FOB's are my inspiration! REPOST: Any thoughts?

I know we've all been working very hard on getting our senators to get this bill to the Senate floor for a vote and we will continue to do that this week as well. Like all of you, I want nothing more than to see this bill pass the Senate. But considering that our time together as a group is growing limited, I thought maybe I should ask . . . do we have a "plan B"?

I hope and pray we won't need it, but what if the worst happens and the bill doesn't make the floor before recess? Should we consider a plan B? Have we ever taken any steps to reach out to our state governors? If the Senate should fail us, should we consider reaching out to individual state governors to try to get more states to pass laws that ban the slaughter, transport to slaughter or sale of any horse for slaughter. Maybe since only two states have slaughterhouses, we might be able to put our strength into getting those two states to ban horse slaughter. This could possibly force the shut down of the existing slaughterhouses. Then, the other states may follow simply out of not wanting new slaughterhouses in their backyards.

Again, maybe this has already been proposed and I just missed it. If that's the case, I apologize for wasting time with this post. If not, what do you guys think? I'm still working, hoping and praying for the senate to pass the bill. I just thought while we were all still together that we might take the time to discuss a "plan b".

Regarding Bill S.1915! This anti-horse slaughtering bill must be passed. The American people have spoken. Every poll taken across the country has shown overwhelming support for a ban on horse slaughtering. Congress passed H.R. 503 by a huge margin. Get the politics out of it! These animals are tortured and mis-treated. The facts are in and well documented. I urge you to read Senator Mary Landrieu’s letter addressed to Senator Bill Frist which supports, in part, this statement.
The American public has been in the dark about this issue. No more! As the facts have surfaced, more groups will form and lobby elected officials until legislation is passed to end the horse slaughtering. As a proud member of Fans Of Barbaro I can assure you as our group expands in numbers and we continue to educate the public on what was formerly known as “America’s Dirty Little Secret,” elected officials will spend a vast amount of time on this issue. And it should not be an issue for one simple reason: Dignity! Every living creature on our planet has the right to die in dignity. The documented proof of horse slaughtering shows inhumane treatment resulting in a disgraceful lack of dignity. America needs to step up! Horse slaughtering is not what America is! We are a nation of compassion. And the next step in our moral progression as a nation, as a species, will come when the slaughterhouses are shut down.
In closing, our species have been given many gifts. We have the ability to grow morally, we have the ability to grow intellectually. We have been charged with the responsibility of caring for this planet and all that is here because we can. Combined, these gifts mean we are responsible for the protection and nurturing of life, not killing it! Horse slaughtering is a gross abuse of the gifts we have been given. The time is now to take a step forward to live up to what we can be as a species and to fulfill our role as the greatest nation on earth, The United States of America!

70 Horses Seized, Some Dead, And Marland Farm

SHARPSBURG, Md. (AP) -- Animal control authorities have seized a 35-acre farm, saying they found dozens of horses dead or dying from illness and maltreatment.

No charges had been filed against the owner of the farm, but authorities were treating the property as a crime scene, said Paul Miller, executive director of the Humane Society.

Authorities were sent on Saturday to investigate reports of a dead horse at Windrinker Farm, near the Antietam National Battlefield. They found more than 70 horses in various stages of poor health, plus the mostly skeletal remains of at least five other horses.

About 20 of the horses were sent to facilities throughout the region for further care, and one of them later died, said Miller, who also serves as a Howard County animal control officer.

Windrinker Farm owner Barbara P. Reinken, 61, denied mistreating the horses but conceded she had more than she could handle.

"The only thing I had wrong, I had too many horses, that's all," Reinken, a registered nurse, told The Associated Press Sunday.

Neighbors told the AP that dozens of horses at a time would sometimes get loose and graze in yards, fields and orchards. Bonnie Holmes said she called the Humane Society last month when as many as 30 horses got out.

"I'm so happy to see they're being taken out of here," Holmes said.

Miller said investigators found little feed on the farm except pasture and volunteers brought in bales of hay for the horses.

Friendly reminder - please add your comment to Sharon Crumb's great anti-slaughter opinion letter published the other day in the Wallowa County Chieftain, blue-linked in Alex's update 1124 up top. Apparently as long as people keep commenting (space below letter), they will keep it online. I was checking to see if mine was printed (it was) and then saw a number of comments from FOB's and other names I didn't recognize; seems like ALL are pro-S1915 (anti-slaughter). Thanks to Carole Shaw, Cora, Otherlyn, Lorraine, Mary, Jo Edwards, Margaret, Dawn, Julie B, don't know what other commenters are FOBs - ALL deserve a big THANK YOU for your well-chosen and moving words.

This is an excerpt from one of the Comments, posted Dec. 1 by Charmaine Jens; contains some specific info that is really compelling, that I hadn't heard before.

Horses are acquired for slaughter without disclosure from the buyer, contributing to both consumer fraud, and horse theft. Many of these horses are faithful & trusting pets, whose owners unknowingly sell their horses at auctions to killer buyers, unaware of what their fate is. Such was the case of Kojak, the noble white Lipizzaner who was abandoned by his owners at the stable where he was kept, only to find himself at a cattle auction to be bought by killer buyers & sent to slaughter -- there are only 3,000 Lippizan's left in the entire world! Thankfully, he was saved by a loving family thru a series of emails between individual's in Colorado & California in an effort to save him before being purchased by killer buyers. And Jill Henneberg, USET 1996 Olympic Silver Medallist, who said, "I bought Nirvana for $600, her meat price, and she took me all the way to the Olympics. I won the medal for my country on a slaughter horse. I wouldn't take a million dollars for her today."

Really puts the kibosh on the argument that the slaughtered are unusable and infirm, doesn't it!

Here’s the update on 10-20-06 from the Missouri Humane Society announcing Darlin’s death!

Darlin (10-20-06) We are very sad to report that, at the recommendation of her veterinarian, Darlin was humanely euthanized last night. Her injuries were very severe and she was not progressing as we had hoped. Her right rear hoof was sloughing off making it difficult for her to stand and she had suffered permanent damage to her spine. The veterinarian assessed that she was in a great deal of pain and that she would not be able to recover from her injuries. When we heard this grave news, our hearts sank. We had been hopeful that Darlin could pull through and recover fully. We want to express our sincere gratitude to the veterinarians and staff who lovingly and expertly cared for Darlin and the Horse Heroes who supported her treatment during this difficult time.

This is a simple point, but if we get switched to voicemail, we need to remember to have the first words out of our mouths be, I am calling IN SUPPORT OF S. 1915. So that an aide who is not listening to whole messages doesn't tally us onto the wrong side of the issue. This is especially important this week, since the pro-slaughter people are making lots of calls.

As we all know, all of our efforts to pass S1915 are culminating in these final days of 2006...

I WOULD LIKE TO ISSUE A CHALLENGE TO ALL FOBs to use the contact information on our lists and GET IN TOUCH WITH THESE SENATORS...

THIS IS SO EXTREMELY IMPORTANT...We have come so far and worked so hard. NO ONE HAS WORKED HARDER OR BEEN MORE FOCUSED THAN THE MEMBERS OF THIS BOARD. EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU has made it a point to see that this legislation is passed. That is something we all can be PROUD of.

Since the comments and forums will soon be gone I wanted to tell you once again how much I love you, and will continue to pray for you. You are a champion of champions! I pray God gives you a long, pain free, wonderful life. How awesome it would be if one day I would get to meet you in person!!

It's really quite amazing all that you have accomplished over the last 6 months, plus. You have saved the lives of many other horses, and changed the lives of thousands people. You've brought people together who may never have met. Brought about so many positive changes in the horse world, as well as the world in general.

Because of you Barbaro, and because of the TWR site and Alex, I met another amazing horse named "Sir Roula", aka, "General". I owned horses many years ago, and have managed to ride off and on over the years, but never thought I would own horses again. Many know who "General Sir Roula" is from my previous postings - the 17 year old blind race horse that had been badly abused, left blind and starving. He is now being loving cared for - and guess what, I'm even riding him. He trusts me, and is lovely under saddle.

Then came the horses from the Oregon auction that arrived at MHR a few weeks ago. There was "Chika", also a TB racehorse, blind in one eye. She's a 7 year old dapple grey mare. I felt the tugs on my heart to adopt her. So believe it or not, I am a horse owner again. I rode her for the first time last week.

I wasn't looking for a horse, never dreamed I would have them again. If I had been looking, I would have been looking for a black Arabian. But God had other plans, he brought these two precious souls into my life for me to love and take care of. So now I am actually looking for a place to rent where I can have them in my own back yard.

So Barbaro, I just wanted to thank you, you changed my life. You've brought new friends into my life. You've taught me many lessons. I thank your mom and dad, Mr. & Mrs. Jackson, and all who cared enough to give you the chance at life. I thank all the awesome people in your life, the list is long. They are all heros along with you.

And Alex, I also thank you, for without this board, none of this would have happened. I know you've put up with alot of ugliness, and don't blame you one bit for ending it. I will continue to check on Barbaro daily - thank you for still making that info available.
I pray for you too, that you will have a long, healthy, prosperous life. May God bless you beyond your wildest dreams.

On the list Shelley gave us, no one has asked for my zip code. In fact the only office that has was my own Senator Feinstein.

The reason I asked about the Zip Codes, was when I called FRIST, I was asked for mine........

Am making calls today as if it were my one and only chance. Feel the URGENCY!!

Frist is first! We've got competition there, but all calls push it to the floor. We'll win when it gets there.

Pelosi is second! She's a mighty powerful voice. "Don't make me have to repeat these efforts!!!" Super strategy!

Then the rest of the the list. And then all of it again! Keep SLAMMING!
