    Barbaro Updates: 144

    updates are now here.

Update 1111: Maybe not today for Russell Baze ? Through race 7 he has been blanked.

Kathy left this message in the comments (timestamp 11:31 pm):

    Thank you for the Pretzels,
Thank you for the homemade yummy candy,
Thank you for the delicious cakes and brownies today!!!
What a wonderful treat for all the staff at New Bolton!
    Happy Holidays!!!!!!
Thank you for all the nice baskets and bags for Barbaro and all the animals at New Bolton Center

I am guessing (actually I know) gifts arrived today for the staff at New Bolton. Kathy Anderson was unable to visit Barbaro today.

Update 1110: This is cool: Barbaro as an SI Sportman of the Year candidate, and this is not so cool: Kieren Fallon in further trouble.

Update 1109: This morning was very foggy, and almost muggy. Seven sets. For my last set I took another "first time starter" to the track ... Gator Nation's two year old half sister. She was very well behaved doing one turn of the track. The synthetic track, which I had heard was to open today, is now scheduled to open tomorrow at 6:30 am. This opening I guess may be dependant on a noon inspection by Michael Dickinson.

Kathy Anderson said she might be going over to visit Barbaro later today. If I can, I will try to catch up with Kathy later to see if she was able to visit.

Update 1108: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (tuesday night). I heard from Mr. Jackson, who had heard from Dr. Richardson. The Jackson's also visited last evening, as usual, and Barbaro was comfortable.
update 9:30 am, wednesday, november 29

Update 1107: Russell Baze is three wins from setting an all-time record for number of wins by a jockey. Here is a transcript of a chat Russell had with Bloodhorse yesterday. It includes the following excerpt:

Russell, first of all I'd like to say you are a great jockey. You've ridden many winners obviously. Who is the best horse you have ever ridden?
Baze: I've been on a lot of really great horses. Lost in the Fog was the one who did the most outstanding things for me.

Fair Hill has a runner in a million dollar race on friday: Officer Rocket, Xchanger to meet in $1-million Delta Jackpot. Good luck to Xchanger!

Here are some more pictures of Showing Up at Hollywood Park.

Again, the Barbaro update will be after training hours. Keep calling.

Good morning Bobby, Alex & Everyone!

Candle alert, count is below 1000 !

How exciting for Russell Baze! He has had a wonderful career!

Bobby, I hope you had a good night (will check in after work), and hope that you have a great day ahead! :)

    Have a good day everyone!

Thank you Alex for posting more pix and look at the big smile on Mrs. Jackson's face and how proud she is of her horse Showing Up! Her big grin says it all. How nice to see that.

NBC's update was great. Your continued progress is nothing short of amazing. Keep up that excellent attitude and appetite. Take good care of yours legs. Grow hoof grow. Lets light those candles.

Good Wednesday morning Alex, Bobby (BIG BOSS HOSS) and fellow fans,

Thanks Alex for the Showing up photos. It's so nice to see the Jacksons have another big winner.

Please remember to call the Senators again today. I've already called them all and left messages. Then like every other day, I call them all again on the way home from work and actually talk to the aides. It really makes the ride home more bearable. In fact, I'm wondering what I'll do when S.1915 passes. I'll have to find another cause to call them about.

Please remember Barb M. (from Florida) in your prayers. Her beloved dog Nala has bone cancer and is scheduled to have her leg amputated on Friday. Her TB, Over Enough, has serious health issues too and I believe is being seen by a Vet who is a friend of Dr. R. today. They're going through a really tough time right now. Barb, like the rest of us, has been tireless in her fight for S.1915.

    Have a great day all!!

Hiya, Bobbey! Are you sleeping in today, sweet prince? May your day be sun-kissed, with quality grazing time. Is Ms. Mocha the Cow still pining over you? Hugs, pets, & "scratches" from your pals in CT - Robyn, Brent, & Nikita

    #### Thanks, Alex, for the awesome pictures of Showing Up? Mrs. J. looks so pleased with her horse. Is it my imagination, or does Showing Up have a resemblance to Barbaro?

To Barb M.: Thinking of you as you address Nala and Our Enough's health issues. ####

    sifting time.-
-dear alex, and FOB,--lost in the fog;s dear mr aleo, vibrant and giving as always,..great reaching to him from FOB,J.
thank you for some great articles posted.
    very grateful..
.the joy of seeing Mrs jackson walking in the winner's circle with the beautiful SHOWING UP..
t he joy of seeing edgar prado on elegant creaure, price tag.
.both huge souls that are a part of BARBARO;S rain of blessings...
may this quick note reach your doorsteps in the most simple of ways.
may the presence of the divine light spread through out the land ..a quilt of towns and cities spread before the eye.
    .just waking up .
in a stable, in a corner of our land.
.with the can do heart, spirit of 1776,
as i often refer to describing NBC and the team assembled to lead this great champion to recovery,..
    this corner of rolling hills.
.holds the intentions and collective breath and muscle of thousands,
    , of sifting time..
in my dreams ,i feel BARBARO is luminous...no nonsense, straight to the point
    ,the heart..
.he never liked those carpet of roses on his back..only the wind to dry his sweat
he did his job wiht the passion of his genes and rippling power
. .his eyes ,always vibrant and changing.
.percieving every detail of every moment--full of imagnation..the most fragile of 21st century challenges..iamgination---.
    TO HEAR that
he is growing stronger each day is a miracle flowering--delicatelike a pusling spder's web in the sunlight..fresh with morning dew--makes me want to be like wilbur the pig and run in the mud..and grass wiht joy.
    .squeel, sqeel..
i consider this time extremely fragile..
for every morning, he gets up from his sleeping in the fresh hay, onto ground that he needs --never knows will it hold?he tries

. ..that faith may be what it is all ab out..,i whisper to myself..
he has to get back on all fours EVENLY.
    .thtis is not a given.
    .there is no gurantee..
something pours out of him to move forward..gingerly at first..but willingly he steps on to ground .that shifts.
    SAND AND FOG
    .his team ,his beloved owners
lsitening ,stretching, putting their own fears aside.
.to focus on THIS MOMENT ,THE ONLY MOMENT HE HAS
    ,WE HAVE
    THIS MOMENT.
like so much of life ,until we get some kind of death sentence, we kind of get in the fast lane and pass this by..
i have only this moment before me..
    barbaro understands this
    based on his behavior
..from his birth to now and his listening skills which if we had just a spec of
we might not be killing each other on any front in this world.
.he gets it and i better get it ..24-7 .
.i never need to see him ..it woul be stunning to see him but in the end
.it is this huge blanket of light
streaming arcs of violets ,reds ,blues ,purples
    which surround barbaro
    and takes in the
curling and weaving vibrations of care and love from all about him
..INVISIBLE THOUSANDS , WE FORM A CARPET OF ROSES for his feet..all four evenly spread on the leaves and grass..
    i head the call
    ..a once in lifetime horse
    a messenger
    .i head the call
as he comes tearing around the corner that magnificent day ,
right out of the pack .
.an elgant deep vibrant wire of a man LISTENING TO HIS HORSE..ALL THE WAY..NOT FORCING ONE SECOND..BREATHING WIHT HIM as now--.their hearts as one.
.i will walk a million miles for you BARBARO and the right of your owners to hold you as they wish
    dear.BARBARO
    .i will guard that
    ,i will dance for that
i will sing that heart song
    .today
, may you be in comfort .
    .may you craze
    ,may you commune .
.may you not miss peter and michael,
    .may you eat that grass
,may your heart be strong and calm, knowing we are all breathing ,carrying and stretching for you
.nothing is given, no guarantess .
glorious for what we have now..
it is worth all the goodnees fob and thuosands across the world making gold ..for you ..for the protection of love ..may it surround you today ,every second
.. to save your horse nation.
    ..to earn it.
    the mpoment--
    to feel the glow ..
. the bucket of grass comes every day..the hands flutter about you with regularity and a keeness of perception , that belies time.
    IVIOLET AND RED LUMINOSITY
in the light and in the dark
    i hear you ,all..

what can we do to make sure the sportswriters voting for the eclipse award gives it to barbaro. we also need to make sure that the jacksons lael stables recieve the eclipse for breeders who has ever bred horses to compare to george washington, showing up,and barbaro. in one year. barbaro deserves the award because his time in the derby was 2:01:36 and everyone who watched the race knows he was in a hand gallop.bernardini has 2 loses and 2 of his grade 1's were against noone if only 4 horses run a race should lose its grade 1 status. checkout invasors time in the classic it was 2:02 and hes an older horse. barbaros number were accomplished in 5 months bernardini has had the whole year and only has 2 more wins barbaro is the best horse we have seen in a long time decades please give him and his connections the credit they are do.

Is it OK to repost stuff here from the Forum? Just read this fabulous post from honneerider, and thought it should be shared. Get our day off to an upbeat start!

    New Year's Resolutions for Horses

. I will NOT roll in streams or try to roll when my human is on my back.
. I will NOT leap over large nonexistent obstacles when the whim strikes.
. I will NOT walk faster on the way home than I did on the way out.
. I promise NOT to swish my tail while my human is cleaning my back feet.
. I promise also NOT to choose that particular time to answer nature's call.
. I will NOT bite my farrier's butt just because it is there.
. I will NOT confuse my human's blond hair for really soft hay.
. I will NOT wipe green slime down the back of my human's white shirt.
. I will NOT blow my nose on my human.
. I CAN walk and potty at the same time. I can, I can, I can.
. I will NOT stop and potty every time I pass the same spot in the arena.
. I will NOT leave when my rider falls off.
. My stall is NOT my litter box. When I have free access to my paddock, I will NOT go back inside to potty.
. I will NOT try to mooch goodies off every human within a 1 mile radius.
. I will NOT lay totally flat out in my stall with my eyes glazed over and my legs straight out and pretend I can't hear my human frantically screaming "Are you asleep?"
. I will NOT chase the ponies into the electric fence to see if it is on.
. I will promise NEVER to dump the wheelbarrow of manure over while a human is mucking my stall.
. I will NOT grab my lead rope in my mouth and attempt to lead myself.
    . I will NOT have an attitude problem. I won't, I won't, I won't!
. I will NOT pull my new shoes off the very next day just to prove that I can.
. I am neither a beaver nor a carpenter. I promise I won't eat or remodel the barn or the new fences.
. I WILL forgive my human for the very bad haircut, even though I look like a freak.
. I accept that not every carrot is for me.
. I will NOT do the Arab Teleport Trick when a bad/naughty/awful Horsasaurus Monster breathes at me.
. I will NOT jump in the air and turn 180 degrees every time I see a bicycle.
. I will understand that bicycles are NOT carnivorous.
. I will NOT shy at familiar objects just for fun.
. I will NOT bite the butt of the horse in front of me during the trail ride just to say "Hi".
. I WILL put my ears forward and cooperate when it comes to photos.

    ##### Barb M, have lifted up Over Enough and Nala in prayer this morning, and will keep them in my daily prayers, along with you also. best wishes.

I am so glad that the Jacksons have Showing Up now. Nothing can replace Barbaro, but a great horse is so enjoyable and exciting, and if anyone ever deserved good fortune , it is the Jacksons. How great is it that G. Jackson is callling Alex to let us know Barbaro's condition? I can hardly believe our good fortune, but I know some of it is due to Alex, and we owe him so much .

Good morning Barbaro, I have prayed that you will accept MMs and Peter's absences in your normal good grace. I hope you won't grieve for them. I am praying for your continued optimistic state of mind as Mary asked us to do. Blessings to you our sweet boy.

Good morning, All! I've been wanting to know how The Hoof has grown -- finally read on one of the links yesterday that it has grown one-third of the way! I hope that's correct. Can't vouch for the source. But it sounds excellent, and Dr Dean says the Big Boss walks comfortably on it. May be slow going, but it is going! Another marvel to me - I'm one of the many who never knew a horse can grow a new hoof! MLE

HOT FLASH....OOPPPSSS I MEAN NEW FLASH.... LOL
I've exchanged emails with Eddie Kilroy about a collaborative effort scheduled for Monday 12/4, the day the Senators return. I've asked him to rally his pro S1915 listeners over the next few days and we'll have our own Nat'l Call In Day. Of course, for us every day is a call in day but if we can increase the numbers Monday it will remind the Senators that we have not forgotten the mission. The strategy remains the same unless otherwise directed by Shelley & Debra. I told Eddie I would provide names & numbers of our targeted Senators. SO PLEASE TREAT MONDAY AS A DAY TO CALL IN DEBTS, BEG, PLEAD, TRADE FAVORS, whatever it takes so we can tally some really big numbers.
    Thanks for your help.

Chris Byers (I hope you see this)and everyone else,

A couple of months ago, you brought a concern to the board regarding Cubby, a tame, penned bear that was shot by Troy Gentry (Montgomery Gentry, country music duo). Gentry claimed the hunt as a wild animal kill. This took place in Minnesota.

It went to court earlier this week. Troy Gentry pleaded GUILTY and was ordered to pay $15,000....
$15,000 is nothing to someone like him! I'm so upset and disappointed.

I hope you see this post Chris.

    Hello Alex and all FOB's,

Reposting the National Day of the Horse Senate resolution from 2004 for those who didn't get to read it yesterday and a link to a PDF for faxing to the Senators - GO Cathy Potter!!

    NATIONAL DAY OF THE HORSE-

    "RESOLUTION

Designating December 13, 2004, as National Day of the Horse and encouraging the people of the United States to be mindful of the contribution of horses to the economy, history, and character of the United States.

    Whereas the horse is a living link to the history of the United States;

    Whereas without horses, the economy, history, and character of the United States would be profoundly different;

    Whereas horses continue to permeate the society of the United States, as witnessed on movie screens, on open land, and in our own backyards;

    Whereas horses are a vital part of the collective experience of the United States and deserve protection and compassion;

Whereas because of increasing pressure from modern society, wild and domestic horses rely on humans for adequate food, water, and shelter; and

Whereas the Congressional Horse Caucus estimates that the horse industry contributes much more than $100,000,000,000 each year to the economy of the United States: Now, therefore, be it

    Resolved, That the Senate--
    (1) designates December 13, 2004, as `National Day of the Horse', in recognition of the importance of horses to the security, economy, recreation, and heritage of the United States;
    (2) encourages all people of the United States to be mindful of the contribution of horses to the economy, history, and character of the United States; and

    ###Morning Joan
    Is he still alive?...lol

Posted by: D'Anne in NC at November 29, 2006 2:09 PM

I just realized what a huge milestone we passed the other day with Barbaro. There have been so many tests that Bobby had to pass to get to the next level (get through surgery, wake up out of surgery, all the way to being able to control pain from laminitis). One of the most crucial milestones was how he would do without the cast. Could he stand on that leg? Was the leg viable and could he use it as a normal horse would? This was something that seemed so far in the future in May, it was hard to even picture. The idea that he might not be able to use the right hind was a nebulous threat.

But now we're here, and he made it! He's in a cotton bandage, and that's all. He made it.

If there had been no laminitis, it's quite possible that right now he would be looking in his little black book for possible dates in 2007 or 2008.

Unfortunately, we (all of us!) have to concentrate on that last, big hurdle: the left hind hoof.

Barbaro has passed every test with flying colors. His attitude has remained incredibly strong. I'm sure his outlook got a big shot in the arm (leg?) when he got to go outside to graze. This horse defines optimism.

Based on past experience, he'll clear this hurdle too. It will take a long time, but I believe the left hoof will be viable.

    Grow, hoof, grow!

DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN TO SCHEDULE THIS BILL BEFORE ADJOURNMENT SO WE DO NOT HAVE TO START ALL OVER AGAIN! MAKE NO MISTAKE--WE WILL CONTINUE TO FIGHT FOR OUR HORSES UNTIL THIS BILL IS PASSED. Hi Laurie H. and ALL:
I saw the result of the Troy Gentry "trial" as well. Just one more example of the disrespect for God's living creatures. The people on this site have done so much for the horses and hopefully the passionate outcry will breach the borders of cruelty to all our fur friends. In my correspondence to senators and their aides I voice my belief that for America to take the next step in our moral progression we have to pass legislation such as S.1915. Horse slaughtering is not America. It's been a hidden industry, kept out of the public eye. But now that the American public knows they have overwhelmingly supported a ban on every single poll taken on the issue. What makes me mad is the fact the horse slaughtering industry is run by so few. The vast, vast majority are not in control. And the only way to change the landscape is for people like FOBs to educate the public. The people here are passionate. And passion, used properly, is a lethal weapon. Many aides have said this issue is one of passion. I agree with them, but then I put "passion" in the proper perspective. It's not passion such as "poor little horsies." To us, sure that's part of it. But I explain it's passion rooted in the fact that as a species we are capable of so much more than the inhumane treatment that is so well documented. It is passionate in that laws are being broken: horse theft, illegal transportation, etc. Why have laws if they are not enforced? It is passionate for fellow human beings, overseas, that are eating "meat" not fit for human consumption as horses have been treated with chemicals that are dangerous to humans. So if an aide wants to talk about S.1915 as a sensitive, passionate issue, you bet. But put the "passionate" in perspective. I went to Senator Coleman's office 2 weeks ago. The aide said this is an emotional issue. And I point blank said yes, but not in the way you possibly percieve it to be. I gave a dialogue similar to what I wrote here. She did not know about toxins, etc. The result: there is more than the "poor animals" reason why we are against slaughter. The bottom line: the whole industry is wrong, top to bottom: inhumane treatment, broken laws, lack of respect for animals and their owners, dirty politics, etc. And the Troy Gentry's of the world need to land their rear ends in jail for a long, long time because he took an innocent life. A life, according to law, worth about $15,000.00? I would love to ask God someday how much a life is worth.
We have a short period of time to get S.1915 passed. What this group has accomplished in such a short period of time is amazing. We keep this up and the power of passion will overcome the weakness of greed and heartlessness.
    Daryl!

Last nite, I was sitting on the sofa, and he came from behind, and jumped over the top, from a standing position, and fell right into my lap...all 130lbs of him. He is such a mommys boy, and a hell of a jumper. Only thing, is he's not supposed to be doing those things. I need to get him a bridle, I think. He's such a horse.

    Good morning all;
Yesterday I posted we have 33 senators as co-sponsors. Sen. Mark Dayton (Mn) is also a co-sponsor but a clerical error has kept him off the list. Next Monday he will be listed bringing us to 34. We need more: the aides have said there is power in co-sponsorship. Sen. Norm Coleman (Mn) is a good person. He is waiting for the wording of S.1915. He has voted in favor of horse protection legislation in the past. Please call his office and let's push him over the edge. Remind the aide his peer (Sen. Dayton) is a co-sponsor and to please support and sign Senator Landrieu's letter to Sen. Frist. Thanks everyone!
Senator Norm Coleman (Mn) - 202-224-5641
Also ask for Dave Hickey, the senator's aide who is the person in charge of research on S.1915! Leave a VM if you have to!

    MESSAGE FROM DEBRAWI AND SHELLEYA.......

We just wanted to assure you that, according to our contacts this morning, S1915 is still very much a priority. We have been asked to stick to the same strategy for now. We've also been told that they are many meetings taking place which COULD result in new instructions to us. Of course we will pass on any new information immediately.

As of now, our calls must continue to the people on Socorro's list of 3:45PM. We can still make a difference as we enter the homestretch.

It's important to remember that these meetings take place behind closed doors and we are not usually aware of the progress being made. Just KNOW that they are diligent about continuing efforts to get this bill passed. Needless to say, the next few days are crucial!!!!

Will keep you posted as new information emerges.

Good morning, Master Barbaro! I hope it is as beautiful at NBC as it is here in Virginia. That would mean you get to go out to graze today! I'm sure that is your favorite thing!

I know you're going to miss Michael and Peter; they will miss you too. They love you so much! You'll have to rely on your Mom and Dad and your Dr. R. I wish I could take you out for a pick of grass, as Alex says. I'd let you eat all day!

Bobby, the NBC report was so good, yesterday! Dr. R seems very upbeat lately about your progress. Keep it up, boy. We're all so proud of you!!!!!!!!!!

Yea!!! for Russell Baze! He is so deserving, a great rider and so good for the sport!

Barbaro or Dr. Richardson for Sportsman of the Year? That's tough; definately a tie. But, what about the Jacksons? They should be part of that tie, too. And Michael and Peter! Gosh, there are so many people who are responsible for Bobby's unbelievable progress, it's hard to choose!?! You are so loved, Big B.!!

Have a great day, Awesome One! You are the BOMB!! I love you, always!

    Good Morning Everyone:

FANS OF BARBARO, if you need help with your Senators, please post so that we can unite and get those calls in to your Senators.

Please keep the Senators' lines busy.

Yesterday, we were asked to contact Senators Byrd and Cochran, don't know the reason, but PLEASE continue to contact them.

"I am still calling senators every day, the 2 full page ad in the daily racing form urged people to call senators Byrd and Thad Cochran. I don't know why but I have been including them in my daily calls. Yesterday the girl in Cochran's office said they have received so many calls she is instructed to tally every day on S1915 and let the senator know, the number I call is 202 224-5054. Don't know what his deal is because he voted against us last time but figure it can't hurt to keep calling him.

Senator Cochran's aide told ME what bill I was calling about before I could even say it. We both laughed and I asked if she was getting a lot of calls. She said they have received "literally hundreds of calls". I asked if the calls were for or against S1915 and she said "they are all siding with you, they're ALL been for S1915". She then told me that they are keeping the tally and forwarding it to the senator.

Little bit of Jack Russell adventure/humor for the day. I took my two girls for their Christmas grooming today and we just aren't car travelers.
Lots of continuous movement, panting, both girls together weigh about 40 lbs.so the seat belt alarm keeps beeping. I'm driving on a 4 land interstate cut down to 2 lanes, gobs of traffic and noise and Gracie steps on the auto-window control inadvertently and the window goes all the way down. Wind blowing in, I am waiting for two Jacks to jump out of the open window onto to the highway and splatter. But no, they got scared by the noise and wind, and laid down on the floor of the car. God, St. Francis, ST. Christopher and St. Jack must all have been watching over us this morning!! I can't wait to go back and pick them up. Travels with terriers, YIKE!!!!!

Hope everyone has a wonderful day!!!

Make those calls, send those faxes and emails!!!

    ###

Chris Byers (I hope you see this)and everyone else,

A couple of months ago, you brought a concern to the board regarding Cubby, a tame, penned bear that was shot by Troy Gentry (Montgomery Gentry, country music duo). Gentry claimed the hunt as a wild animal kill. This took place in Minnesota.

It went to court earlier this week. Troy Gentry pleaded GUILTY and was ordered to pay $15,000....
$15,000 is nothing to someone like him! I'm so upset and disappointed.

I hope you see this post Chris.

cathy......I am not sure....seems to be the wording of the bill itself. I was told that some bills only having a few co sponsors will get passed and others with a lot of co sponsors dont. This whole system of politics needs to be fixed, IMO. Sen Kyl of Az is not a co sponsor nor has he signed on to Sen Landrius letter to Frist. But I am told he will vote yes if asked to vote. My feeling right now is that the pressure has to be put on the 22 committee members to get it to Frist so it can be brought before the entire senate. I was also told that Sen Burns is a big stumbling block to this whole process and it may only take one to keep this from getting out of that committee. I really dont know what else to do except to call these commmitte memebers and try to get them to do this ASAP.

BTW, I always enjoy reading your posts. Tnx. Elie

I only know that there are many Tennessee Walker Horse people, and I asked the lady in Sen. Frist's office if they were calling, and she said they were calling and faxing alot, and that they oppose the bill. I know that they are really upset because the USDA is cracking down on all the soring going on in the industry. Other than that, I have no idea why they are opposed to the bill. Maybe they are like the other horse associations that oppose the bill.

She's still drinking water and is showing some interest in food, so I'm taking her back to the vet tomorrow for more sub q fluids and high dose anti-biotics. There is a slight possibility that if we can flush the toxins out, she may have more time.

As much as I don't want to lose her, I have to accept that the day is coming and I'll have to send her over the bridge. It's so hard, but I have to do what is right for her regardless of what is 'right' for me. The next few days will be spent hand feeding her and telling her how much I care.

Thank you all so much for your prayers and healing energy. My brothers and my dad don't seem to get it. They know how important my animals are to me but haven't even bothered to call to see how I'm doing or to ask about Alexis. It really angers me that people are so fast to turn their backs on people who only want to know that someone cares. Thank God for my cyber family. It's comforting to know that there are people in this world who really do care.

    Bless all of you.

Chris....tnx so much for the link. I got all the names and of course Sen Burns is on that committee.
Sen Landreiu is not on that list. That seems to be a problem from my understanding of how this is all supposed to work.

At any rate, I will call all those on the list that are not already co sponsors and urge them to get the bill to Frist.

I also understand that this bill cannot be added to the appropriations agriculture bill as it already has one amendment to it and that is all you can get on a bill. Our bill is probably going to have to fly alone or maybe they can find another bill to attach it to.

It all seems very confusing, but keep on calling and at least get the numbers up. Surely, they can tell from all the calls how much this means to all of us needless to say to all the horses.

    Good Luck to us all.

Tnx again to all. Ellie AZ

Sen Burns is a big stumbling block to this whole process. You got that right!
    # ellie
If it weren’t for Burns this bill would have passed in the senate in 2004. He added an amendment to the bill. Which only stopped the Government from paying for the inspections of horsemeat. Now the slaughterhouses have to pay for the inspections. The senators call it the Burns Amendment.
Thank God he is out of a job next year. You know he sends the Wild horses in his state to slaughter, and you try to tell me he is not making money on that!! He calls it cueling
I don’t know how he sleeps at night!
Now I am mad, think I will call Katie

Senator Landrieu is not a member of that committee. That's why her name isn't there.

If you refer to Socorro's post of 3:45, you will get the information on Senator Landrieu and the others to call who are not on that committee.

We're not sure yet how they are going to get this bill out. That's the strategy they are figuring out this week.

Question for Alex or anyone who may know:

If Barbaro's hoof is growing irregularly, are the "high" spots filed off to make it more uniform or are they waiting until the entire hoof is longer before trimming it? Also, how long will it take the "spot" underneath to heal?

Perhaps this has been asked before and I missed it but I have been wondering about this for a long time.

Snowy, cold day in Colorado (love it!)and a very good day to put up Christmas decorations. Please remember to check the threads on the forum for the Christmas parties.

Barbaro, sweetie, you are rid of your splint! You are a darling and a wonder. Keep up the healing and we will take care of S1915 and all the rest.

Thank you Alex for putting up with us and keeping us informed. Bless all the staff at NBC, the Jacksons, Tim, Michael and all who need prayers, especially the defenseless animals.

    Have a good day, everyone.

Am I missing something here or what....I am not trying to be disagreeable about this, but if the other 78 senators cant vote on this bill or really do anything about it until it is out of the commerce committee, shouldnt we be calling those 22 senators who can do something about it. Or at least the ones that are not co sponsors of the bill. Once it gets out of committe, then call all the others who will then have a chance to vote our way. Am I not getting it all yet????? Tnx Ellie

    Hey Guys!

As we all know, all of our efforts to pass S1915 are culminating in these last days of 2006...

I WOULD LIKE TO ISSUE A CHALLENGE TO ALL FOBs to use the contact information on SOCORRO'S POST OF 3:45 PM and GET IN TOUCH WITH THESE SENATORS...

THIS IS SO EXTREMELY IMPORTANT...We have come so far and worked so hard. NO ONE HAS WORKED HARDER OR BEEN MORE FOCUSED THAN THE MEMBERS OF THIS BOARD. Each and every one of you have made it a point to see that this legislation is passed. That is something we all can be proud of.

So I am ISSUING THIS CHALLENGE...THAT WE SPEND EVERY LAST WANING BREATH OF THIS YEAR IN DOING ALL THAT WE CAN TO LET THEM KNOW WE ARE HERE AND WE WILL NOT STOP UNTIL S1915 BECOMES THE LAW OF THE LAND.

EVERYONE OF YOU MATTERS...through each FAX, each EMAIL,each PHONE CALL...one step at a time... thus building a coalition of those who will not stop UNTIL THE SLAUGHTER ENDS...

LET US REDOUBLE OUR EFFORTS AND ANSWER THIS CHALLENGE TO DRIVE OUR POINT HOME...S1915 MUST PASS...

LET US NOT LOOK BACK AND WONDER IF WE LEFT OUT A SINGLE CALL OR FAX OR EMAIL...

    WE CAN DO THIS!

Posted by: Pamela at November 29, 2006 6:03 PM

"The Petition Senate to vote S1915" under slaughter issues on the chat forum has a petition to sign online, please do, this will go to Frist I believe. There are only over 50 signatures so far, it needs MORE signatures, please sign it if you get a chance today, thanks all of you, we will be heard!

    Deborah,

Considering that it's been over four months since the resection, they are probably able to file his heels to keep them even. Until the rest of the hoof wall gets to ground level there won't be any reason to trim as that part of the wall isn't bearing any weight yet. It's hard to say what exactly is going on without having NBC post pictures of the hoof, but my guess is that by now the sole has grown substantially.

Even after the wall is grown out, the quality of hoof may not be all that great initially but will get stronger over time. There are alot of newer products out that can be used to rebuild the hoof wall and support the sole and coffin bone.

Although he won't be meeting the girls next year I truly believe that he will covering mares in 2008. After all, has anyone ever heard a male say, 'not tonight honey, my foot hurts'. Show them a girl, and nothing will stop them.

ELLIE...I don't think you are being disagreeable at all...Sometimes I have to pause and regroup because I myself get confused!

The purpose of calling the people on SOCORRO'S LIST OF 3:45PM...was not explained other than to say that there is a direct correlation between those names and this bill.

Unfortunately, we were not told WHY we were to do this, but the people in charge passed this on to us. DEBRA in WI and SHELLEY are getting directions from someone.

Now, you can call anyone you want. Just be sure to include the people on this list because AS OF TODAY...they are the key. (Of course, everyone should be calling their own Senators, as well)

I understand completely...Strategies seem to change so quickly that I have trouble keeping up!

I hope this has helped...If not...just let me know if I didn't answer the heart of your questions...I will love to help!!

    I'm reposting from yesterday.

HOT FLASH....OOPPPSSS I MEAN NEWS FLASH....

Another wonderful "promo" for Barbaro as S.I.'s Sportsman of the Year from Superfecta's blog:

"...I am pleased with Sports Illustrated's inclusion of Barbaro as a Sportsman of the Year candidate -- not only is it nice to see horse racing in the mainstream media, but since there is not really a specific Eclipse award Barbaro is likely to be awarded, it's good to see him honored in another way. Whether or not it is time to create an award for off-the-track influence on the sport is another debate. In related news, the recent article on how 'life is a series of small steps' for Barbaro has made it to China. Now that's global reach."

    Joyce Moore,

Tell Alexis she will meet my Fisher kitty too. He had kidney problems and left us in 2002, 4 months after my daughter was born. He used to sit on my lap and purr up a storm when I was pregnant. Boy was he happy that she was coming!

    To All

I posted this on another thread yesterday (re: Quite A Rush)
This is for Everyone interested in Harry Aleo's horses; and of course in the late great Lost In The Fog.

Harry Aleo is a true gentleman. They don't make 'em like they used to, that is for sure!

To make a long story short, as I was walking out the door the other day actually it was last Monday or Tuesday a day or two before the races at Bay Meadows last week, when my cell phone rang.

It was "my friend Harry Aleo"

He had telephoned me in answer to a query I had posed before him.
What a delightful conversation we had over the phone for at least 30 minutes!.
When Isaid "You can't be and 86 year old" Harry's answer ---
    "I'll be 87 on December 7!

As I was thinking b about what type of card I should write to "my new Friend"...
    I had a thought.

What do you all think if we each contributed a small amount to GEVA --- the foundation in Northern California that's a home for retired thoroughbreds --- which is Harry's charity of choice. in honour of Harry Aleo's 87th birthday

I know that there are so many claims for donations; I thought it would be a nice gesture for a man who never ignored any one who was kind enough to write to him about LITF. ---And he did so in such a personal and individual way

Donations, in the name of Lost in the Fog, may be made to the Glen Ellen Vocational Academy (GEVA), an equine retirement facility located in the Sonoma County town of Glen Ellen. GEVA provides a home for retired racehorses as well as for horses that are injured or simply in need of a home.

GEVA inc., Equine Retirement Foundation, P. O. Box 2101, Glen Ellen, CA 95442. For more information on GEVA, visit www.glenellenfarms.com/geva.

This is the charity of choice for anyone wanting to donate in memory of Lost in The Fog or to honour Harry Aleo on his 87th birthday December 7, 2006.

I think I might start a new thread with this information in honour of Mr. Aleo;as there doesn't seem to be much response on this thread as it concerns a particular horse of his.
    Happy Thanksgiving week to all!!

Joyce Moore I'm so sorry to hear of Alexis' crisis. I pray she will have improvement with fluids, as often happens. When the BUN/creatinine levels become more manageable, then she will feel better. Have you given her fluids yourself? she may need them daily. I pray for comfort for her and you.

Have you been following the story of little Opie? Opie is a 12 year old MinPin (now an honorarykiddeninnasoot) who has overcome almost insurmountable odds, with kidney disorder and very highly elevated BUN and creatinine. Then came an infection at an infusion site, and she seems as though she was beginning to tire of the struggle to live. She has had an amazing turnaround, in spite of the associated sick tummy from her antibiotics, she eats well, drinks well, seems to be overcoming the infection, and the BUN/creatinine levels are coming down dramatically with daily sub-q fluids. Now it's evident she has no intention of giving up. I pray the same will be true of your Alexis

    Will be thinking of you
    Love to you and Alexis

    Rikki--

I think we should all just contribute s individually to GEVA in honour of Harry Aleo.

Friday, when I make my contribution I will find out how they handle this.

But I think that if one wants to say FOB in honour of Mr. Aleo, or something to that affect--- perhaps there is a way that they can compile them.

I am not sure that the amount is as important as the individual sentiment.

From how I read Harry Aleo he enjoys making a human connection with an individual; it brightens his day-- particularly after what he has incuured with the Fog.

    2780.21 in reply to 2780.14

I am so very, very sorry to read this, ettlind ... in fact, it breaks my heart to read this.

But I know all about cliques on message boards, and they are alive and kicking with what is known as 'girl gangs' ... just a bunch of women who bully their way around a message board and get unsuspecting people to kowtow and follow them. They orchestrate, manipulate and weaken people by making them feel sorry or guilty, or both. There's a great book called "Odd Girl Out" and it's all about what goes on with message boards on the net, and let's face it, most of them are inhabited with women.

I've seen it over and over and over again, and if you don't play "their game" you are out and depending on how large their clique is, they can manipulate a whole group of people against you UNLESS these other people are strong enough to think for themselves and have minds of their own and are not easily led. Unfortunately, that is not the case most of the time. Girl gangs or cliques are formed out of insecurity and ego trips ... a need for power and control, and when they see that slipping away, they resort to name-calling, attacks and a desire to preserve their enclave at all costs. Heaven forbid anyone who goes against them and you will then see the whole entourage come out in full force in defense of "their" leader, whoever that may be; sometimes it's more than one person, but if you watch long enough you will see who belongs to these cliques; it becomes very apparent after awhile.

They are weak people who prey on other weak people and their strength is found not in autonomy but in gathering a group or forming a clique to then become a strong gang force. It's all in this book ... "Odd Girl Out!" They gather new people by trying to convince others that people are unfairly maligning them or ganging up on them, when in actuality, it's the other way around. These women are usually very manipulative and seek other women who are easily manipulated to draw them in.

Do you ever see this happening with a group of men?

    Good afternoon all:
Many of you have posted saying "you don't understand how people could throw away these horses." Questioning how some of the horse organizations are against the bill. Pro-slaughter people think differently than we do in that we are a compassionate group of people who care about all life. The pro-slaughter people look at their horses as a posession, like a car, etc. The animal's welfare is not part of the owners' agenda. They have no emotional attachment to the horse. When the horse has outlived it's usefulness they will discard the animal in any means possible. We don't comprehend that type of thinking because we posess something the pro-slaughter group doesn't: HEART!! This faction of the pro-slaughter people is dangerous to our mission in that they have been organized for years and have convinced people in power that the only horses they send to slaughter are the old, infirmed horses. We know better and it's up to us to educate the aides we talk to. When I have called senators offices I always ask if there has been an aide specifically assigned to S.1915. I have talked with a number of people who research the issue. I ask if there are any concerns he/she or the senator has. If they do I can address the concern on the spot. Then I talk about the pro-slaughter people and their stance. This opens the aide to telling me what he/she has been told by that side. And their main argument is always there will be too many unwanted horses if the bill passes. I then counter by saying the pro-slaughter side consists of many people who "use" the animal for gain: profit, notoriety or both! These people DISCARD these animals with no concern for it's welfare then turn around and tell the politicians slaughter is necessary because it's a form of population control. Educating an aide with the real facts will, in most cases, inject the emotional factor of the issue. After listening to pro-slaughter people who know how to sell because they are cold-blooded money hungry types, the aide has a new perspective, one which he/she may be able to convey with passion to the senator. We have to keep calling. We are making a difference. Should we not get it done this year, not to be negative, we have laid the groundwork for success for next year. I talked recently with a horse owner who is pro-slaughter. He talked about his rights of ownership, disposal, etc. blah, blah, blah. He told me the handwriting is on the wall. He said, in his opinion, this is the last year for horse slaughter. He said he was astonished by the public's knowledge "all of a sudden!" I asked him if he had heard of Barbaro. He actually said this: "Name sounds familiar! Was she on American Idol?" I kid you not! Anyway, I explained who this mystery name belonged to. I explained the Barbaro Effect. Then I said to him, "Just think, because of a horse the industry you support, in your own words, has maybe only one year left." Maybe we should get Barbaro on American Idol! After all, he is an American Idol!
As a Minnesotan I am embarrassed by the judge's handling of the Troy Gentry case. Both he and Gentry need to be spend a day in a slaughterhouse.

And they post soon after each race concludes as they're happening. So does equibase but I prefer drf.

Debbie LA--re the Tennessee Walker Assoc. response, I'd suggest just telling her simply what you were told, when, and by whom, about them supposedly being pro-slaughter. Then ask them what their position is, and if they're anti-slaughter (or at least not pro-slaughter & neutral) ask if they'd mind contacting the source and making a correction. And if they'd get the word out to their members and help the campaign.

Through Alex Brown's postings on Fair Hill trainer Tim Woolley's website at http://www.timwoolleyracing.com, thousands of the popular bay colt's fans check in each day hoping to read of any change, positive or negative, in his condition. They maintain a lively comment board and refer to themselves as "Friends of Barbaro"--FOBs. This band of fervent animal lovers has become a force to reckon with as far as mobilizing the public and elected officials regarding animal-friendly issues such as recent anti-horse slaughter legislation. And the horrific and highly-publicized injuries of Barbaro and dozens of other thoroughbreds recently have led track owners to consider using new, improved materials such as Polytrack.

    Joan,
I'm so sorry to read about your friends' horse. May God give them both peace.

    Cheryl,
The fluids I ordered haven't arrived yet. I'm picking up a bag from a friend later today. Tomorrow morning I'm going back to the vet (100 mile round trip) and will get enough fluids to carry me through until mine arrive. Alexis is still drinking on her own so I need to be careful that I don't overwhelm her system or give her a reason to start vomiting again. I'm also giving her a liquid B vitamin complex along with green tea extract and cranberry and a meal replacement liquid when she doesn't feel like eating. I'm open to all thoughts and advice!

I truly appreciate everyones thoughts, healing energy and prayers! It means so much to me and I know Alexis can feel the energy.

It's good to know we've been on the right track! I'm just confused about one thing. He says the names on the list are the only ones who can move the bill. Does this mean we should stop calling our own senators? Or should we keep calling them?

Our own senators need to hear from us as their constituents.....I don't think we should ever stop calling them. And that's what HSUS is advocating for National Call In Day.

Someone tell me what the last part said

    Deborah,
Your message is a bit confusing.

You said you mentioned the TWH people to the Aide? What about? And you
asked the aide if they were getting call from these people...do you mean
the TWH people? And they are against the Pro-Slaughter bill?

And is this the same Aide that said NWHA was Pro-Slaughter? Or are two
    different people involved?

Frisk is pro- about watering down the Horse Protection Act and is
getting support from certain horse factions. NWHA is strongly adverse
to this legislation being changed, as it would allow the standards for
    abuse to be lowered.

I know that we all know how amazing the Jacksons are, but every once in awhile I am just so completely overwhelmed--think of it, the Jacksons know that Barbaro is getting a TON of attention, treats, loves, etc. He is being attended to by Dr. Dean, the Top Gun of ALL veterinarians in the country. They have other horses to attend to. BUT--every day, they handpick grass for Barbaro and personally deliver it--not to mention now calling in an update every day so that none of us has to worry. I know I am stating the obvious, and all of you know this better than me, but I just had tears in my eyes today reading the update. I will certainly think of them when I am being lazy tonight, with my glass of wine in front of the fire. Mr. and Mrs. Jackson could be doing that too--but instead they are seeing to Barbaro's comfort and our peace of mind.

    It's staggering.

LETTER TO BOB BARKER: HOW ABOUT THIS?

We have a challenge for you, Mr. Barker . . . as an animal lover and humanitarian.

Earlier today, Joan Roya contacted your Foundation requesting assistance regarding the passage of S1915, the Anti-Slaughter Bill currently trapped in committee in the US Senate. Passage of this bill would immediately eliminate the inhumane deaths of over 10,000 animals a year . . . animals whose meat ends up in Belgium, France, and Japan as a dining delicacy.

There are only three slaughter houses in the country (two in Texas and one in Illinois), but all three are foreign owned, pay little or no US taxes, and bypass federal laws on food safety by hiring their own inspectors. Not only is the transport of these animals inhumane, as has been shown in numerous catastrophic accidents and deaths, but the killing process is ghastly. This process requires the use of a bolt gun to stun the animal before it is hung by one leg, at which point its throat is slit and the horse is bled while still thrashing.

In addition, and of no small concern to us, is the fact that horses feed and medications contain many ingredients that make this product unfit, and even highly dangerous, for human consumption. Since many of these animals are stolen, or purchased at auctions by anonymous “killer buyers.” The horses are not sufficiently tested for the presence of such ingredients in their systems, and the resulting product is less than safe.

Through Alex Brown's postings on Fair Hill trainer Tim Woolley's website at http://www.timwoolleyracing.com, thousands of the popular bay colt, Barbaro's, fans check in each day hoping to read of any change, positive or negative, in his condition. Here Kathy

    Dear Mr. Bob Barker,

Here is a description of our group, from a recent online article at

"Through Alex Brown's postings on Fair Hill trainer Tim Woolley's website at http://www.timwoolleyracing.com, thousands of the popular bay colt's fans check in each day hoping to read of any change, positive or negative, in his condition. They maintain a lively comment board and refer to themselves as "Friends of Barbaro"--FOBs. This band of fervent animal lovers has become a force to reckon with as far as mobilizing the public and elected officials regarding animal-friendly issues such as recent anti-horse slaughter legislation. And the horrific and highly-publicized injuries of Barbaro and dozens of other thoroughbreds recently have led track owners to consider using new, improved materials such as Polytrack."

We are requesting your help in anyway that you would be willing to help us and the great American Horse. Mr. Barker we are aware of your love for all animals. We would be honored to have you on our side. Thank you for your time and attention on this important matter facing the innocent lives of many horses.

    Sincerely yours,
    The Fans Of Barbaro

    Debbie,
    That link doesn't work.
Yesterday I called Senator Frist's Knoxville office and spoke to a lady. Didn't get her name. After I asked her to please have the senator to use his influence to get this bill to the floor for an immediate vote, she said that she would pass the message on to him. I then asked if she was getting alot of calls. She said yes. I then asked her if she was getting any calls from the Tennessee Walking Horse people. She told me that she was getting lots of calls and faxes from them. I ask if they were for or against s1915 and she told me that they are against the bill. I thanked her for the information, and to thank Senator Frist for his service to the people of TN and the country.
    That was it!

Oh, Kathy, I am one of the "snow folks".....no ice needed!

To finish off my thought process, I'll freely admit that I was snobby in my opinion of ALL animal racing. I thought all race dog, race horse, etc. owners did not care about their animals and they were "disposable" to them. The whole idea of racing made me furious. I know those people probably do exist, but the Jacksons have made me see clearly that is not always the case. They take care of Barbaro as I would take care of one of my kitties, and that is saying ALOT!

I understand your concern about too much fluids going in to Alexis if she's drinking on her own, but the infused fluids are the ones that rid the toxins that the kidneys are unable to handle. CRF patients frequently DO continue drinking fluids on their own, and sometimes to excess, which is what is one of the hallmarks of CRF and acute RF. But the kidneys aren't working to flush toxins, so it doesn't matter how much is taken in through the mouth. I'm sure your vet has given you guidance, but the infused fluids for cleansing. The infused fluids work to lower the BUN and creatinined, those taken by mouth will not because of the deficiency of the failing kidneys. The BUN/creatinine may be what is causing her to feel nauseated, vomit, not want to eat or drink, and even have neurological-appearing symptoms. Your doc will give you what he or she believes the right amount to administer, but whatever it is she really needs it. Has your doc mentioned a low-protein diet?

I'm really pulling for you and Alexis.

    Love to all,
    Cheryl

    OK. Here's a corrected copy.

We have a challenge for you, Mr. Barker . . . as an animal lover and humanitarian.

Earlier today, Joan Roya contacted your Foundation requesting assistance regarding the passage of S1915, the Anti-Slaughter Bill currently trapped in committee in the US Senate. Passage of this bill would immediately eliminate the inhumane deaths of over 90,000 animals a year . . . animals whose meat ends up in Belgium, France, and Japan as a dining delicacy.

Many of these animals are stolen or purchased at auctions by anonymous “killer buyers.” The horses are not sufficiently tested for the presence of such ingredients in their systems, and the resulting product is less than safe.

Through Alex Brown's postings on Fair Hill trainer Tim Woolley's website at http://www.timwoolleyracing.com, thousands of the popular bay colt, Barbaro's, fans check in each day hoping to read of any change, positive or negative, in his condition. They maintain a lively comment board and refer to themselves as "Fans of Barbaro"--FOBs. This band of fervent animal lovers has become a force to reckon with as far as mobilizing the public and elected officials regarding animal-friendly issues such as recent anti-horse slaughter legislation. But, we can’t do it alone.

We ask for your advice, guidance, and support in this worthy endeavor. Please join T. Boone Pickens, Willy Nelson, and Bo Derek, not to mention Roy and Gretchen Jackson (Barbaro’s owners), in support of passage of this Bill, and use your influence and personality to bring this important issue before the public and the Senate.

    Our Sincere Appreciation,
    Fans of Barbaro

Sorry if this has been posted already. An important factor in the slaughter issue:

High Hay Costs Push Up Cases of Horse Abandonment
    by: The Associated Press
    November 29 2006

High prices and scarce supply for hay this season are leading to abandoned horses, according to animal-welfare groups.

"This is the first year where people are literally just opening the gate and kicking them (the horses) out," said Chuck Fisher, ranch manager at Equine Outreach in Bend, Ore., which rescues and rehabilitates horses and puts them up for adoption.
Just last week, he said, he'd gotten a call about taking in three tame horses found starving in Ochoco National Forest.
A year ago, he bought hay for $125 per ton. This year, he is paying $200, Fisher told The Bulletin newspaper in Bend.
"Hay, if you can find it, is very high right now," said Rodger Huffman, program manager of livestock identification at the Oregon Department of Agriculture. "That situation is statewide."
Tony Aceti, owner of Hay Depot in Bend, said he is selling his premium hay for $200 per ton, and oats-and-alfalfa hay for $140.
"There's people that just can't afford it," he said. "It's sad."
Huffman said that cattle are being auctioned off in record numbers this year as a result of hay costs. Hay shortages last winter prompted many ranchers to hoard as much as they could buy and store this summer, which resulted in the large price jump, he said.
Fisher said that between the high cost of feed, fuel and fertilizer, horse owners feel they are just "out of options."
Aceti said that until recently, it was easy to find local farmers who grew hay and sold it cheaply from their property. But then developers bought up the farmland and built subdivisions, reducing the local hay supply considerably.
He said he can usually count on having sold 20 percent of his inventory by the start of December. But this year, he said, 80 percent of what he bought over the summer is already gone.
Lynn Ouchida, community outreach director for the Humane Society of Central Oregon, said where the farms and ranches once were, ranchettes have sprung up to take their place, many of them bought by people who always dreamed of owning a horse.
Some of them "just don't know what they're getting in to," Ouchida said. "You can buy an inexpensive horse around here, but it's the maintenance that really costs."
Fisher said that hay and supplements can run a horse owner at least $60 per month, depending on how large and how active the animal is.
Abandonment of a horse is a misdemeanor, with a maximum fine of $2,500, according to the Deschutes County sheriff's office.

Here's a letter I have written, not sent, to Mr. Bob Barker! I would like responses for changes, etc. Please do so. You can e-mail me at:
    shanamrdiv@yahoo.com
I am also going to e-mail it to Alex for his approval and ask him if he could be the contact for Mr. Barker or if he wants to designate someone at Fair Hill.

    Thanks everyone!
    Daryl!

    To: Mr. Bob Barker
    From: Fans Of Barbaro
    Dear Mr. Barker:
In September of this calendar year the U.S. House overwhelmingly passed a bill to ban the horse slaughtering industry in America. Since that time, thousands of Americans have been working fervently with U.S. Senators to pass Bill S.1915 which will end the horse slaughtering.
As a well known advocate of animal rights we, The Fans Of Barbaro, ask you to lend your voice to this issue. Over 90,000 horses are slaughtered in America each year. We have passionately, but professionally, requested that our public officials listen to their constituents. Through phone calls, letters, faxes and e-mails we have communicated our concerns about the inhumane treatment America’s horses receive during transport and at the three slaughterhouses in existence on American soil. We respectfully request that you allow us to provide you with all the irrefutable facts for your review. We believe you will conclude that action must be taken to protect the innocent lives of those who serve us.
The Fans Of Barbaro are a nationwide group of people who have come together because of the tragic injury Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro suffered in the Preakness. We communicate every day on a website: www.timwoolleyracing.com. In the six months since his injury this website has kept us informed of issues America’s horses face. In response this group has reacted with fundraisers and assisted people in finding homes for horses. This is called the Barbaro Effect and it does not stop here. An anonymous donor to The New Bolton Center, where Barbaro currently is hospitalized, started what is now known as The Barbaro Fund. This money goes to help other animals in need of medical care. Veterinary hospitals around the country, such as the University Of Minnesota, have set aside funds for the study of laminitis. Their reasoning, as stated publicly, Barbaro. It goes on and on. All in all, The Barbaro Effect has been of benefit to people and animals. And I personally believe you would approve of the conduct displayed by The Fans Of Barbaro. We are passionate and professional.
With your graces, we would like to provide you or a contact within your organization the facts on horse slaughtering. And having your voice, sir, would be a wonderful gift we would consider as from The Barbaro Effect!
    Sincerely,
    Fans Of Barbaro!

I just pray everday that this bill will pass and soon for our precious horses. A wonderful article about "The Barbaro Effect" ...

Barbaro has helped many other horses
    November 30, 2006

Over the past six months the name Barbaro has come to mean more than just one horse recovering from raceday injuries. But his misfortune has spun off into several positive moves within the equine and racing industries.

One is the highlighting if the need for more knowledge about the killer disease laminitis; the need for improved racing surfaces to make it safer for gallopers; and the horse slaughter issue. As Barbaro's co-owner Roy Jackson said: "We have an obligation. We are their keepers." And there's the Barbaro Fund, which was established to improve services and equipment at the New Bolton Centre, where Barbaro is recovering. As well as that Pennsylvania's governor gave $US13.5 million to the New Bolton Centre.

Barbaro continues to improve following the removal of his right hind leg cast on November 6, according to his medical team.

"Barbaro is steadily gaining strength on his right hind limb now that it is out of the cast," said Dr. Dean W. Richardson, Chief of Surgery.

"He is only wearing a very light cotton bandage on that leg and both walks and stands well on it."

Barbaro's lower right hind leg had been in a cast since surgery at Penn's George D. Widener Hospital following his accident at the Preakness on May 20.

"Radiographs of his fractured lower limb were taken yesterday and look excellent," said Dr. Richardson.

Barbaro's left hind foot, which had laminitis, continues to improve.

"The left hind foot is improving gradually and has a long way to go although his comfort on that foot remains surprisingly good," said Dr. Richardson.

"Barbaro's attitude and appetite remain excellent, and he still takes short walks outside to graze each day if the weather permits."

He is the grateful recipient of cut grass from his owner Gretchen Jackson, who visits often, says Alex Brown, of Tim Woolley racing. The site's online updates on Barbaro ontinue to be hugely popular, and its readers call themselves "Friends of Barbaro" - FOBs. Associated Content wrote that: "This band of fervent animal lovers has become a force to reckon with as far as mobilizing the public and elected officials regarding animal-friendly issues such as recent anti-horse slaughter legislation. And the horrific and highly-publicized injuries of Barbaro and dozens of other thoroughbreds recently have led track owners to consider using new, improved materials such as Polytrack."

And on the racing blog, Pulling Hair and Betting Horses, Barbaro is being touted as a Sportsman of the Year candidate:

"The point is that Barbaro had a much larger affect on our sport than his races indicate. It was in his injury and recovery that the nation has gone wild about Barbaro: He receives more fan mail than a lot of other sports 'heroes', in his name the UPenn Vet School has raised thousands of dollars, his owners have been championed wherever they go.
"And finally, his lasting effect is that any track that switches to a synthetic surface could also be known as 'a track that Barbaro built.' I don't think it's any coincidence that we're seeing more tracks switch to a synthetic surface. True, California was already in the works, but a surface switch is now being championed by anyone attached to racing, or hoping to be attached to racing. In fact, let me rephrase, I don't think it's any coincidence that track surface switches are becoming front page news. It's no surprise that these discussions are front page news (in racing media) because people care."

She is a character. She was posing for the camera. I kid you not. We thought it was just a fluke, but lo and behold we looked at other pictures of Rosie and she always looks straight at the camera. She's such a ham. I got to read all the stories of people in the winner's circle with her. They were jumping up and down, yelling and crying, petting and kissing her and she was as cool as a cucumber she didn't flinch at all. She just enjoyed all the attention bestowed upon her. You would have to meet her to truly understand how wonderfully special she is and why we love her so much. She is just one of a kind. All indications are she has a very bright future ahead of her. As I said she will be racing again after the first of the year so I will keep everyone posted. Thanks again, Lorraine

National Walking Horse Association is strongly adverse to this legislation being changed, as it would allow the standards for
    abuse to be lowered.

    Cathy nor I know???????????

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at November 30, 2006 12:06 AM

    Cathy & Debbie L.A.,

I think the TWHBEA (Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders' and Exhibitors' Association - also referred to as TWH) is a different org than NWHA (National Walking Horse Association). At least that's what I gathered from the following:
    http://www.twhbea.com/about.htm and
    http://www.nwha.com/

So maybe the NWHA is supporting S1915 and TWH is against? If the NWHA is against slaughter, they probably were concerned that anyone thought their members were calling in favor of slaughter. Just going by what I found online...certainly not saying I'm an expert on this topic! And I didn't read everything about both organizations, so don't know if their respective stances on S1915 are on their sites or not.

But I would imagine the NWHA is saying they want the bill passed without "diluting" it. Anyone else, chime in!

Posted by: Gloria at November 30, 2006 12:09 AM

Debbie: It seems to me that they are saying that changes proposed by whomever would weaken the Bill's intent. Possibly allow for other loopholes for the slaughter industry to creep through, and limit consequences for animal abuse.

Posted by: annie inTX at November 30, 2006 12:10 AM

Dr. Frist doesn't strike me as a kind person. He used to "adopt" cats from animal shelters and vivisect them. It's common knowledge; he saw nothing wrong with doing that to peoples' lost pets. I doubt he'd feel anything for a horse going to slaughter.

    Lynda Pelleteri,
Please don't defend what Senator Frist did to those animals. It doesn't matter if he was in college or not. It's not right. Just because people do experiments in college doesn't make it okay. Animals are totally defenseless. Serial killers have four common traits and one of those is cruelty to animals. What if they said they slaughtered horses to cure cancer? It does not make it okay to do that to horses. Different cause same outcome. It is so cruel;Dr. Frist and anyone else who could do vicious acts to animals are compassionless people. I wouldn't want anyone like that for my doctor, senator, let alone my president. Please don't defend someone's cruelty to animals. The animals don't deserve it. They feel pain, too! I'm not attacking you, Lynda, but that really hit a nerve with me. I just can't bear how people justify themselves to be cruel to animals.

Jeannie; He did not justify it, he said it was hideous and dishonest. I am sure that there is forgiveness in the world and when you figure out what you did was bad, you recognize it, admit it, and it is forgiven. That is the crux of my statement. I am not trying to defend what he did, I am just trying to state that he knew what he did was wrong.

    JCarsonBlack; LOL hahahahaha.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at November 30, 2006 12:34 AM

True, Jeannie. Sociopaths, particularly sadistic sociopaths, generally start by torturing animals. In fact, that is one way animal lovers are getting bills passed to protect animals, because they know with some people, it leads to other things.

I am not saying this is the case with Dr. Frist, however. But I wouldn't have him to my birthday party either. I have three cats, and I wouldn't want them to feel uncomfortable.

I just managed to catch the tail end of NPR's Talk of the Nation today, and Kinky Friedman was the guest. He just ran for governor of Texas, and as he said with only a 33% turnout no independent can win.

In talking about his campaign, the ONLY thing he mentioned he wanted to do, and still wants to do, is close down the horse slaughterhouses. He mentioned the numbers involved, where they are located, and who owns and who eats. He is keeping the flame going in Texas.

He mentioned that this not "the cowboy way" - save a horse and ride a cowboy...

He is also the author of a new book, " The Christmas Pig - A Fable " about a pig who asks the little non-speaking boy who is painting the Christmas creche why he, the pig, can't be in the picture. There is an excerpt from the book on the site, too. I think this book may go in some of my Christmas stockings.

Here is the link to listen to Kinky Friedman on NPR today - it is about 16 minutes long, and the horse slaughter mention is near the end. It is obvious he worked to get this mention into the segment, because it did come a little out of context. He was WORKING at it!

Julie; Am I a vet? Oh no I couldn't stand it LOL. I assume you are talking about how vet schools get animals to dissect? I dissected a cat in high school in Human Anatomy class and a pig in Biology class in college. Don't know where they got the pig exactly, but the cats came from the streets of New York. The school recieved dozens of them every year. I don't know why it was New York because I am sure CA had plenty, but that's where they came from.

Jake...I hope I don't regret bringing this up again...but I have an honest question meant to be purely free of any partisan intent...
Med schools supply human cadavors for students. What did he need the animals for? or Was this before he was in Med School? If so, I thought the Colleges and Universities supplied any animals needed for labs and such? This is just so bizarre I cannot believe it!

Posted by: Julie L at November 30, 2006 12:46 AM

    ####
Pamela; if I may intercede..Colleges can't supply human cadavers unless people donate their bodies to school. The last I read on the issue (and it may be totally different now) is that hardly anyone does this because they just don't know or realize that they can. The reason animals are used is because their systems are nearly the same as ours. It's easier to learn what connects what on an animal because they are smaller.

This would be a good question to ask Doc Richardson.

SusanO, your very discerning dog's "tail" is to laugh. Animals are so much smarter than many people realize. 19 years ago, when I was still in grad school, I was leaving town and couldn't afford a carrier for Felix. He immediately tore through a box, so I stopped at the HS to buy one of their cardboard carriers for the trip. I had to carry him in with me so he wouldn't be loose in the car when I returned and opened the door.

I will never forget two things: the look of utter weariness and despair on the clerk's face when she asked if I was "turning this one in", and the way Felix grabbed me around the neck and would not let go.

Sadly, the HS is unable to be non-kill. Felix knew. He could tell.
(and I scrimped and saved and bought him a carrier before our next trip home).

Julie L, he's doing okay today, thanks! Not great, but better than two days ago. Love to Lola the Heating Pad Queen; we hope she gets better.

Pamela - I don't know about that. I do know that there's a difference between vivisection and dissection. And that's what makes me sick. Vivisection is to cut into something that is alive.

Like that poor frog I refused to cut into in Biology. One small step for the frog, one giant F minus for me.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at November 30, 2006 1:09 AM

What I know about horse froth comes from Dressage. When you have the horse collected, his head is a certain way and it encourages the horse to salivate more. Some salivate more than others, but it could be Showing Up is holding his head in such a way that his salivary glands are being incouraged to make excessive saliva. Nothing wrong with it, it just makes a mess.

    Lynda,
When my daughter was doing dressage our trainer said that salivation was a sign of being relaxed in a horse, that the jaw is loose enough that you see the saliva. This may tie into what you said as when the head and neck are curved downward it is also a sign the horse is relaxed and comfortable. Kind of like when a baby drools because the jaw is loose.

After all this close encounter with the political system, far more than I ever had before, I had to appreciate Kinky Friedman's comments today. One particularly struck home, "You know what politics is, don't you? Poly (many) and ticks (blood sucking parasites)." Yikes. But what do they want - HOW can anyone get them to move in a productive, positive, HUMANITARIAN way? I don't understand the lack of movement, because if anything, one would assume this gold star would help them live a life knowing they did ONE good, moral thing while in this august body!

Can't wait for next week to see what possible, positive movement may happen.

Kinky Friedman said another thing I loved -

" Money may buy you a fine dog, but only love can make her wag her tail. "

Blessings on all our four legged companions, friends, loved ones, and those we know are so in need yet unknown.

Hello Alex, Bobby and fellow fans,

re: Senator calls today - This afternoon on my second round of calls, I had a hard time getting through. I thought that was great - you're all calling. It took 3 times to get to talk to the aide at McConnell's office - she kept asking me to hold. Nelson's in Fl was busy - first time that happened and Martinez - also FL - bounced right into the voicemail. Reid - I got voicemail as well. Frist - the same "Can you please hold a moment?" and then bounced to the voicemail. Funny thing - when the one aide said "I'll pass that along to the Senator". I said "How"? He said "excuse me?" I said, I just wondered how you do that. Do you have a pen and pad there and tally the calls? He said "no- we enter it in the computer to do that". Interesting!

I love Mexican sweet bread! We have a great cafe here named "Los Bagels", it is owned by a Mexican guy and a Jewish guy. Their bagels are great, you can get them with anything on them. They also have pan dulce, hallah (traditional "Jewish bread"), many Mexican goodies, "Day of the Dead Bread", and lots of Dia de los muertos figures, I forgot what they call them, that you can buy to grieve for someone or ask for healing, etc. If you lived closer I would highly recommend it!

Would like to post a very special picture I have of
Thumblina, who is the world's smallest horse.

Standing just 17 inches tall, she is never going to be a champion show-jumper.

In fact, the tiny mare is so small she would struggle to leap over a bucket.

But such things are of little concern for feisty Thumbelina who has just been officially recognised as the world's smallest horse.

The five-year-old received the title from the Guinness Book of Records after her astonished owners realised she was never going to grow any bigger.

She was born on a farm in America to a couple who specialise in breeding miniature horses.

These popular show horses usually weigh about 250lb and reach a height of 34 inches when they are fully grown.

But when Thumbelina was born, it was immediately clear she would never grow to this size.

At birth she weighed 8lb - the weight of many new-born babies - and eventually she grew to a mere 60lb.

Thumbelina's extraordinary size has been put down to dwarfism, which makes her a miniature of a miniature.

But despite this massive difference in size, it is feisty Thumbelina who rules the roost over the stallions and racehorses on her 150-acre farm.

'When she was born, she was so small we thought she wasn't going to make it,' said Michael Goessling, whose parents Kay and Paul bred the miniature horses.

'She weighed eight pounds when she came out and she looked very ill. We feared the worst.

'Because her legs are proportionally smaller than her body and her head, she has to wear orthopaedic fittings to straighten them a lot of the time.

'But we love her and wouldn't want her any other way.'

At a mere 17 inches tall (four hands), the mare measures up to the shins of the 'normal' horses in the paddock.

The Goessling family have bred miniature horses for the past 15 years on Goessling's Goose Creek Farm in St Louis, and these usually stand at 34 inches at the withers - the ridge between the two shoulder blades.

But the owners of the mini horse began to realise they may have bred a record-breaker when she stopped growing after a year.

'My parents have bred hundreds of miniature horses, but we have never had one as small as Thumbelina,' Mr Goessling said.

'She was just a complete fluke and we call her a mini mini.

'When she was young she found the dog kennels and decided she wanted to bed-in with the dogs, rather than with bigger horses.

'She spends all her time playing with the spaniels, but we have to try and stop her grazing on grass, because she is not allowed to eat too much.'

Thumbelina survives on a cup of grain and handful of hay, served twice-a-day.

Normal horses lives for about 35 years, but she is only likely to live up to the age of 17 because of her size.

She has the ability to become pregnant and give birth to foals, but her owners have decided not to allow this to happen.

Mr Goessling, 39, said: 'There could be complications during the pregnancy, so we think it is better to avoid the risks.

'And although we love Thumbelina, we do not think it is right that the gene which creates dwarfism in horses is carried on through future generations.'

The tiny mare has become sometime of a celebrity in her home town in America, but Mr Goessling insists they will never sell her, no matter what price is offered.

'She is too precious to us to sell,' he added. 'I think my parents would sell me before they part with Thumbelina.

'She has that special Wow factor, which you only get when you physically see how small she really is.'

Yes, I am familiar with your area, it is also very beautiful, very green and lots of rain like here! Because Humboldt Cnty. is in CA lots of people think it's warm like So. Cal. NOT! It's very mild temperatures on the coast but inland a few miles it can get hot during summer.

I consider myself very lucky to live here, the people are caring for the most part, the countryside is beautiful, there's lots of wildlife and organizations supporting wildlife, it's a good place to raise children, low crime rate, no smog, not much traffic, etc. My daughter liked growing up here but now she's in an opposite climate - New Mexico, that's where she found a job. There isn't a lot of big business here so jobs are not as plentiful as a bigger city but we do have Humboldt State University. Walmart tried to get in here but were voted down my the locals. It would have put a lot of small business out - not good for a small town! I probably sounds like I'm bragging - I just consider myself lucky and I am grateful. Let me know if you want any figurines.

I even talked to Ensign's office! I found a toll-free number on his website, gave it a shot, and IT WORKED from Washington State! I told the lady that I was calling in regards to S1915; she asked if I was calling from Nevada. I said no, I'm calling from Snohomish, WA, but that this is a national issue, as horses from here are shipped for slaughter. She understood and will pass to Senator Ensign my desire to have S1915 passed before the 109th congress adjourned for good. So we'll see what happens. The phone number is 877-894-7711. Give it a try and see if it works for you guyses! Too bad that not all 100 senators don't have toll-free telephone numbers!
