Barbaro Updates: 118

updates are now here.

Update 941: Still no Barbaro update this morning. It was a lovely morning at Fair Hill. There likely won't be too many more days like today. All horses seemed to train well. I took Hawty Creek to the track for the first time since she came in. She was pretty keyed up, but jogged around pretty well.

WGAL Channel 8 out of Lancaster (I think) came to do an interview about Horse Slaughter. They were at New Holland (auction) yesterday. The piece is scheduled to air thursday, November 9, either on the 6 or 11 pm news. I think I made some decent points, but we will see. Keep up the good work.

Update 940: A quick update from Sue McMullen re: the European Breeders' Cup horses:

Ahead of Wednesday's all important draw, a brief word about the euro raiding party, 11 of whom are now settled comfortably at Churchill Downs. The Ballydoyle horses travel today and if Aiden O'Brien runs true to form, they will not be seen on the track until the end of the week.

Connections of Ouija Board confirmed she had a trouble-free journey and they are delighted with her and the fact that the going on the Turf is fast, which she will relish. This wonderful mare is an old hand at the travelling game and nothing much bothers her. She apparently arrived at Churchill alone in the leading van in the convoy, as befits a visiting Queen! Watchers on the backstretch at Churchill might be fortunate enough to see her this morning. Last year's race, when she failed to retain her crown, just wasn't run to suit her as it was run at a muddling pace and she couldn't get going properly.

As predicted, Frankie Dettori has elected to ride Echo of Light in the Mile so Christophe Soumillon will ride Librettist, already a proven Group 1 winner.

Ramon Dominquez has been booked to ride Sir Michael Stoute's Rob Roy in the Mile. This talented four-year-old has been dogged with bad luck throughout his career but his good run in the Champion Stakes two weeks ago when he finished second might be a signal that the tide is turning for him. He is certainly a lot better than his form guide would suggest. Ramon is an experienced BC jockey, having ridden Better Talk Now to victory in the Turf at Lone Star Park.

Jamie Spencer, formerly stable jockey at Ballydoyle, will be reunited with Ad Valorem in the Mile, having ridden the horse for all three of his juvenile wins in 2004 and finished fifth on him two months ago in the Prix Jacques le Marois. Garret Gomez rides Aussie Rules, having won the Shadwell Turf Mile on him at Keenland and Mick Kinane rides Ivan Denisovich. Mick 'the ice man' Kinane also rides George in the Classic and as George will need all the help he can get for that much-debated engagement, Mick is the right man for the job as he has the coolest head for the big occasion and knows George well. He also rides Scorpion in the Turf.

Connections of David Junior, who also travelled well, await tomorrow's draw hoping for a good position in the Classic for the colt who retires to stud in Japan after the race in a deal said to be worth $8 million. In a surprising move to many, trainer Brian Meehan elected not to run David Junior after his victory in the Coral Eclipse at Sandown in July, preferring to give him one last roll of the dice in the Classic. So he goes into the race after a layoff and despite having dirt in his pedigree, he has less experience of it than his American rivals, but he's still as short as 7-1, such is his reputation and undoubted talent. Giving him a layoff will either look inspired or disastrous and we will know on Saturday, but if it works and he has luck in running and is happy on the surface, expect a very big run from him. The race should certainly be run to suit him as he likes a strong pace.

Stan Moore is confident of a great performance from his two-year-old filly Satulagi in the Juvenile. Winner of a Listed race at Ascot Satulagi is tough and has plenty of experience, which Moore hopes might give her an edge. She won't do much on the run up to the race, but they plan to put her through the gate a couple of times, possibly on Thursday, as although she has never given any trouble at home, our gates are different and we don't have a bell! It might seem a small thing, but preparation is everything with horses and the more that is done with the filly to show her how it works over there, the better chance she has of showing what she can do.

I plan to interview Ramon Dominguez before the Breeders' Cup, nice to hear he has picked up a European mount!

Update 939: Again, this morning's Barbaro update will be much later, due to Michael Matz being in Keeneland preparing Round Pond for the Breeders' Cup.

The Daily Racing Form has a nice article on Michael, Barbaro and Round Pond: Still in wonder of what could've been. The following are a couple of excerpts:

"It sure would have been nice having this horse running in the Classic or, who knows, running in Europe next year," Matz said. "It's just such a shame. Maybe it's a bigger thing what he's done, bringing the racing public together - not just the racing public, but people in general."

The interest in Barbaro remains intense. There are still signs of encouragement on the fence posts at the New Bolton Center. One reads, "Grow Hoof Grow." Another reads, "Believe in Barbaro."

and

"He's done an awful lot for me, this is the least I can do for him," Matz said following a recent visit with Barbaro. "I live 10 minutes from here. The kids go to school right alongside of here. [One day], I was grazing him and the school bus went by, and all the school kids yelled out for Barbaro."

Update 938: Just spoke to Peter (6 pm) and he visited Barbaro today. He took Barbaro out for a pick of grass, groomed him and changed his bandages. An upbeat report.

My Breeders' Cup tickets have arrived!

Update 937: Sue McMullen e-mailed to let us know "11 of the Euro runners have now arrived safely and are installed in the isolation barns at Churchill. It's only the Ballydoyle horses that have yet to arrive and all being well, they should be there tomorrow." With the contigent that were based in Keeneland also arriving at Churchill, and the Churchill meet opening yesterday, I am assuming there is quite a "buzz" at the racetrack.

While there were a lot of works over the weekend, today saw a few more Breeders' Cup horses on the work tab. From Belmont Premium Tap, under Edgar Prado worked: Premium Tap Drills Sharp Half-Mile for BC Classic. What is not reported in the article is whether his tongue was hanging out for the work (Premium Tap's, not Edgar's!)

While the racing world will focus on the Breeders' Cup this weekend, very shortly thereafter Australia will play host to its major race, the Melbourne Cup. Kieren Fallon is over there preparing Yeats. Sue McMullen had this to report on Kieren Fallon, Yeats, and a horse named Fields of Omagh:

As if he didn't have enough problems, Kieren Fallon was in danger of missing his ride on Yeats in the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday following a 10 day ban imposed last week by stewards at Moonee Valley for his winning ride on California Dane. Happily for a relieved Fallon the ban will be lifted on the eve of the big race, for which Fallon, who cannot ride in the UK and elected not to apply to ride in the US, has been personally preparing Yeats and gaining experience of Australian tracks and style of racing. The ban was imposed as stewards decided he had cut across too quickly from the outside to the rail, a move that would have probably earned him a caution at home but Australian stewards are very strict. Although Fallon admitted he was guilty of the maneouvre, he also pointed out his good record with stewards around the world, which is true but he is also very lucky to have got away with 10 days under the Australian rules.

Yeats, winner of the Ascot Gold Cup (run at Royal Ascot) currently tops the betting for the race that is famous for 'stopping a nation' and Fallon reports the horse to be in great form.

Following Collier Hill's heroic win at Woodbine last weekend, it would be impossible to mention racing in Australia without reporting the victory of another 'old timer' whose win in the Group 1 Cox Plate had many observers in tears, including his trainer David Hayes. Fields of Omagh, now nine-years-old, has contested the race four times and never finished worse than fifth, in his first run in 2002. He won in 2003 and was second and third in the next two runnings. The horse enjoys celebrity status among racegoers in Australia and as a mark of respect to him he led the field out to the track but even his most ardent fans knew it would be a tough call.

In the year of so many fairytale racehorses it now seems almost inevitable that in his very last race, he was not going to be denied and fought all the way to the line, upside Pompeii Ruler. Fields of Omagh now joins the small and illustrious list of horses that have won the race more than once and, as a gelding, he heads to the 'Living Legends' retirement home for Australian champions.

The Bloodhorse on Fields of Omagh win: 'Omagh Goes Out a Winner in Epic Cox Plate.

Update 936: A nice article from the Thoroughbred Times: Better Talk Now, Film Maker prepare together for Breeders' Cup that not only discusses their work yesterday, but highlights the consistency these two have displayed over the years. I was talking about this with Tim this morning as we were jogging back on the track. Graham has two horses in the Breeders' Cup and between them they have won a cup race, finished second and third! As I noted earlier there is only one other horse running next saturday who has won a cup race (I think), one of Film Maker's biggest rivals, Ouija Board.

New York Post has this article on Bernardini: BERNARDINI FACES CLASSIC QUESTION which summarizes Bernardini's dilemma well. He has done nothing wrong, yet his competition has been relatively weak. Lets see how he performs on the big stage. Any price better than even money, and I may have to go to the window (although I know from past experience betting Breeders' Cup day at the host track is a nightmare).

Update 935: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (sunday night). I just spoke to Peter who had heard from Michael. Peter is planning to visit later today so I will try to get another update later.

I forgot to note earlier, Real Lace, Tim's Maiden winner at Laurel over the weekend, appears to have come out of her race well. I asked Tim about the race, it seemed she was much the best. The jockey was looking around with 3/8ths left to race. I know Tim has liked this filly for a while, lets hope she continues to move forward.

For anyone on myspace, check out Better Talk Now!

As for the word "meat" in relation to HS, yes, it's true - just about all of us creatures on this planet have flesh on our bodies including horses and historically we as humans have eaten just about any flesh carrying animal including ourselves to stay alive. But, since most of us are not starving, although some people and children in the US actually do not have enough food, we do rise a notch in the evolution of consciousness and see food as a matter of choice. That choice is very personal, what you put in your mouth I may not put in mine. Then there are people who see animals as friends and do not eat them. I eat them, chickens, lamb, etc. but I don't eat horse because of my cultural upbringing, it's like a Hindu eating his sacred cattle, I just couldn't do it. We can't change a culture where horsemeat is acceptable but we can change our country's policies that enable horses to be killed in this country for others cultures to eat.

That is what I pledge to work on, changing the policies/legislation and make it illegal!

On to the phoning, faxing, letter writing, talking to friends, raising the consciousness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good afternoon all.
As I was trying to go to sleep last night I realized why I posted about Star's injury. As I said in my first post, I watched the Preakness and have followed Barbaro's remarkable recovery since that day.

I hate to mention the awful details of Star's injury, but I want to express my thoughts. When she held her leg up, her foot seemed to just hang. My first thought was oh no it is very similar to those horrifying pictures of Barbaro's leg. Then last night it hit me Star's injury is in her right hind leg also!!!!!!

Joyce Moore - have you any experience with Vet-Stem? It is very interesting. I will discuss it with my vet. But it is probably to expensive. This is tough reality of animal ownership. When cost is an issue and you can not do every thing possible for treatment. It is a very awful feeling to know.

Susan TX, Lisa, Bobbie B, Cindy and anyone else I missed thank you so very much for your prayers and healing thoughts.

BERNARDINI FACES CLASSIC QUESTION CRUISE CONTROL: Barnardini, headed for his toughest challenge Saturday, rolls to victory in Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont earlier this month. October 30, 2006 -- LOUISVILLE - Bernar dini: the new diamond bright star of the American racing firmament or the biggest bust of the year?

That's the question that overwhelms the 23rd Breeders' Cup set to go here Saturday.

The most important championship racing day of the year begins and ends with Bernardini. He's horse of the year, or imposter of the year. It's that simple.

The flashy bay colt, who has taken the establishment by storm with five straight top graded stakes triumphs, will confirm his soaring stature by winning the $5 million Classic against the best older horses in the land or falter in the attempt and fade from memory quicker than Tiny Tim.

This is it for Bernardini. And as horse races go, it doesn't get much more tantalizing than this.

Bernardini may be the talk of the turf world, but he's a non-starter with the public at large. To date, there is no mass adulation, no box-office appeal, no fan club. He doesn't begin to approach the charisma of Funny Cide or Smarty Jones.

And for good reason. He did not appear for the Kentucky Derby, the defining event for three-year-olds. He won the Preakness almost by default after Barbaro's tragic breakdown. Then he became the no-show of the year by skipping the Belmont Stakes altogether. This is a resume with big gaps.

Since then, Bernardini has won the Jim Dandy in a gallop, the Travers against five pluggers and the Jockey Club Gold Cup against the worst field ever assembled for that historic trophy.

Just think: On Oct. 7, when the New York Racing Association ran five Grade 1 events, topped by Bernardini in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, just 16,900 went through Belmont's turnstiles. New York horseplayers didn't break a leg to go see the new star of the business.

Cheryl in PA-I knew I missed somebody! I am praying for Star to come through this painful ordeal. I know how sad it has to make you to not hace money to do extraordinary things for them. I am that way now, I have 3 cats, 2 dogs, and dad is helping out in emergencies. I am unemployed due to illness also. I saw about your Lyme disease also, horrible stuff. I used to have a customer with it, she was older, it affected her badly. I pray for both of you.

Suggestion for spreading the word about HS:

Over the weekend, I posted an informational item about HS including senator contact info, on my regional craigslist board, under Community/Pets -- and no one flagged it for being off point! If more of us could do this with our craiglists around the country, it might be a way to spread the word to some animal lovers.

See more in TWR DBs, Horse Slaughter topic, "Idea: Post on your regional Craigslist!"; includes the text of my craigslist post.

Cheryl in Pa: Hoping Star is doing aswell as can this morning. I (knock on wood) have never had to deal with a serious injury like that but I know how I felt when i recently heard one of my guys had his leg up and wouldnt put weight on it - It just made me sick (turned out he had gotten kicked in the shoulder - probably deservedly). Cheryl,

I've only know one horse who was treated with Vet-Stem. They had remarkable results. The mare had a suspensory injury (ugly) and was going sound in five months. She was able to return to her previous level of training (4th level dressage).

I don't know the cost of the treatments, but I understand how finances can dictate what we can and cannot do. I've been there, and it's terrible. I couldn't afford chemo for one of my dogs and I'll never forget holding him as he took his final breath and apologizing to him for not being rich.

I'll keep you in my prayers.

Heres a heartwarming story about a 9 year old sired by Barbaro's sire "Dynaformer" who has gone on to racing steeplechasing immortality.

FAR HILLS, N.J. -- McDynamo jumped into steeplechase immortality with a fourth consecutive victory in the Grade 1, $250,000 Breeders' Cup Grand National Steeplechase at the Far Hills Races on Saturday.

McDynamo
Horsephotos.com
Steeplechaser McDynamo winning the Breeders' Cup Steeplechase at Far Hills.

A 9-year-old, McDynamo took over from Mauritania on the final run down the backstretch and galloped home to win by 22 lengths with jockey Jody Petty aboard. Chivite was second, and Mixed Up was third. McDynamo covered the 2 5/8 miles over soft turf in 5:58.20.

A two-time Eclipse winner trained by Sanna Hendriks, McDynamo earned $150,000 to pass Lonesome Glory atop the list of American steeplechasers in terms of career earnings. McDynamo has won $1,028,104 in his six seasons of steeplechasing.

"He does things so easily, it's weird," said Hendriks. "He doesn't look like he's working hard at all, and other horses struggle, especially in going like this. I guess that's what greatness is - it's horses who can put it all together that become this good. They have the right mind, the right body, the right everything."

McDynamo improved to 6 for 6 over the Far Hills course. Since winning his maiden here in 2001, McDynamo has added 12 more wins, including four Grade 1 scores in the Breeders' Cup.

Petty marveled at the ease with which McDynamo pulled away from the others down the backstretch.

"Mauritania looked like he was getting a little tired, so I figured we should go on," said Petty. "McDynamo just opened up his stride and went to the front. Then on the turn, I figured they were close to me. When I looked, we were so far in front I had to look again. He gets there so easily it amazes you."

The race lost some of its shine when 2004 Eclipse winner Hirapour was scratched because of the soft turf. The two title contenders could meet again in the Grade 1 Colonial Cup on Nov. 19 in Camden, S.C.

I was impressed with Radnofsky in her debate with Hutchison. Keeping fingers crossed for pro-horse election results. If the good guys win, I might make your rum cake ;)

Which reminds me, I think one of the most amazing experiences on this board has been that we've all been working together regardless of political affiliation, lib/con leanings, etc., pretty much without political anger pro/con various candidates (we all dislike a certain Montana senator, I think ;) Do you realize we've pulled off something that has escaped almost all of the rest of this country? Everyone,

Keep those calls/emails/faxes going for our goal to become a reality. We need every possible contact be made, at every opportunity.

Like Pamela so very eloquently said the other day (sorry, but I can never say it as good as she can), but just think of all the horses not as fortunate as Barbaro. Think of the "unknowns" out there who have given their life, their talents, and their love to their owners. Those beautiful horses who have given their humans nothing but unconditional love, respect and joy. Think of them, and the dire need to protect them, as we move forward.

We were all called together for a reason, all of us who belong to what so many of us call "the Barbaro family". It is our duty to protect all horses, at every opportunity. For Barbaro, and all of them.

Love to all.

Hey Guys,

Just received a phone call from the Washington firm that is involved in the anti slaughter public relations. We have spoken before but hadn't been in touch for a while.

She was interested in how we've been making out and if we might have some suggestions for her. I explained what we are doing and how well organized we are. Her question is one that we've asked ourselves many times......how can we spread the word to others that know nothing about this issue. She is looking for some ideas on how to use the INTERNET to broaden our support base.

I know many of you have posted in other groups that you're involved with. Any ideas out there would be greatly appreciated. Is there a way to create a group that would attract tons of people? Have we been using all the resources available to us? I'm not as computer savvy as some of you are. Ideas?

TO ALL CAMPAIGNINGTO PUT AN END TO HORSE SLAUGHTER.
Just another article I thought was important to post. Sorry if this has been duplicated.

___________________________________
September worst month since 1995 for horse slaughter in US
October 29, 2006
September closed out the bloodiest month for horses in the United States since 1995, as 11,166 were sent to slaughter at one of three foreign-owned slaughterhouses in the US, a report by the US Humane Society has revealed.
September's record number brings the year's total to nearly 100,000, including horses slaughtered in the United States and those shipped to Mexico, Canada or Japan for slaughter, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture figures.
The 2006 weekly average of horses sent to slaughter is up to 2,178 ? up 235 per week over 2005. During the last week of September alone, 2,225 horses were slaughtered.
The U.S. House of Representatives outlawed the slaughter of horses for human consumption Sept. 7 by a vote of 263-146. The bill, H.R. 503/S. 1915, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, is now in the Senate for a vote.
"The horse slaughter industry is racing to gather up and kill as many horses as possible ? trying to squeeze out more profits before the Congress puts an end to their despicable business of butchering healthy American horses," said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States. "Americans must call on the Senate to act this year to put an end to the carnage produced by these foreign-owned companies."
Opponents of the legislation claim that slaughter is necessary to deal with the "unwanted" horse problem, saying most of the animals are old and infirm. But, according to the USDA, nine out of ten of horses slaughtered are healthy. Further evidence that no link exists between "unwanted horses" and slaughter is the fact that the industry continues to import horses from Canada for slaughter, including 2,773 horses so far this year and 298 in September alone.
The legislation was introduced by Representatives John Sweeney (R-N.Y.), John Spratt (D-S.C.), Ed Whitfield (R-Ky.), and Nick Rahall (D-W.Va) and by Senators John Ensign (R-Nev.) and Mary Landrieu (D-La.), It has been assigned to the Senate Commerce Committee, led by Chairman Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) and Ranking Member Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii), both cosponsors of the bill. Last year the Senate overwhelmingly approved an amendment to stop horse slaughter by a vote of 69-28.
Other data reported by the USDA:

* During the first nine months of 2006, 23,096 American horses were exported live for slaughter in Mexico, Canada or Japan.
* Exports to Canada and Mexico are up significantly over last year (46.3% and 20.2%, respectively) - with 6,411 live horses sent south and 16,547 transported north to be slaughtered, compared with 5,332 and 11,309 during the first nine months of 2005.
* Two of the deadliest weeks in the last decade occurred during September 2006 - the weeks ending September 2 (2,520) and September 16 (2,463).

In addition to a record-breaking month for horse slaughter, September saw two serious vehicular accidents involving horses en route to slaughter. In Missouri, 41 horses and a mule were being transported to slaughter in Dekalb, Illinois, when the cattle truck in which they were being hauled crashed. Seven horses died when crushed by others and nine others had to be euthanized at the site because of the severity of their injuries.
In Texarkana, Arkansas, several horses were injured when a tire blew on the truck hauling them to slaughter in Fort Worth. The horses appeared to have suffered injuries from the accident or while fighting in the close quarters, according to news accounts.

Sherry,

The have their people working on the big names and celebrities. They need US to help pass the word among others like ourselves. The foot soldiers. The regular folk:)

And not to worry, they're not at a standstill. They are just asking around to groups that they know are involved and have been successful in organizing. I think it's neat that they are looking for ideas in how to best use the internet.

Hello FOB's,

I was searching for info on Senator Landrieu and found this interesting article about Senator's Reid, and McConnell in comparison to Senator Frist.

They do seem instrumental in helping with S1915 and everyone has said all along.

We have some of the most dedicated people on this site. Those that are truly determined to get this bill passed and end horse slaughter in this country.

Unfortunately, as passionate as we are, we need more people to be involved. How can we do that?

Thanks Socorro for making it a cinch to call the senators. They don't need a lot of talk, they need to know Americans everywhere care.

That is what this site can offer. We are all across the country and if each of us gets our own friends and family involved, we've got great representation from all over the country.

To all new posters. Please use the list of senators Socorro posted and make those calls.
Every call counts.

My 4H kids start their calling right after school hours and call the list at least once each weeknight!!! God Bless the Children!!!!!!

Posted by: Rosemary in NE OHIO at October 30, 2006 8:37 PM

ShelleyA,

Here are some of my thoughts regarding getting the word out.

1) Start a group on MySpace. That website is visited by thousands of people each day.

2) Depending on cost, they may consider purchasing email lists and doing a mass emailing.

3) Put up flyers EVERYWHERE. I've even gotten the ok to post flyers on the front windows of some privately owned restaurants. Across the top of the flyer it says, WE DO NOT SERVE HORSEMEAT AND OPPOSE THE SLAUGHTER OF HORSES. Additionally, leave some flyers at the front door that have the necessary phone numbers and ask patrons to make calls.

4) Everyone who is a member of any club or organization needs to ask the organization how they feel about this issue and if they will publically support us. Talk to the owners of the gym, tanning place, hair salon, dog groomers, tack shop, grocery store, wherever you go.

5) Host a party. Some halls will donate space. Use the party to talk about the issues (not much time for this one).

6) Go door to door handing out flyers and asking residents to make some calls. If each of us on this web site alone did this with 20 of our neighbors, what would the cumulative effect be?

Calling the senators is great, but we need to get more people informed and involved. We need to garner support NOW.

Just my thoughts....I may post others later.

Shelly A,
Contact your local radio and television stations ask if they are aware of the salughter that takes place here in the United States and kills our innocent helpless horses. Let them answer and continue from there. Always ask for the producer. If you get no where with the producer go straight to the show host, get their attention.

FRIAR TUCK - Sorry for the delay, I was not on the board at the time.

CHRIS - I will work on a list for the Committee tomorrow and for each State

SHELLEY A - Care2.com is a community of over 6.5 million members fighting for different animal causes. HSUS, ASPCA and other groups are a part of this group (NOT PETA). The way to spread the word is for a member to organize a group and find members that are interested in our purpose and pass the word to those groups.

That is where the Petition orginated.

Renee,

Use that anger to keep motivated. But remember to take some time to bask in the light of what we have accomplished so far.

The slaughter plants and KB's know they are on their way out. That why September's numbers were so much higher than normal. They knew HR503 would be passed and they know S.1915 will also be passed. Expect the numbers to jump again should S.1915 get to the floor.

I don't know whether this will help; but I wrote a 600 word piece on S 1915 intended for the Op Ed page of the NYTimes -- I sent it a couple of weeks ago-- I don't think they are using it. I willl post it and perhaps the PR Firm can use it.

I don't know if it will help.
Needless to say I was very disappointed that they did not print it (NY Times ) it would have had a nationwide audience. Oh well

Where Are All the Pretty Horses Going? Where Have They Gone?

HONOURING A GENUINE AMERICAN HERO

by Carol Rebecca Reiss

On September 7, in response to the efforts of some very concerned and conscientious Americans with heart and soul, who refused to give up the fight for the rights of a COMPANION ANIMAL, the beginning of a major victory was won for the American Horse. The House of Representatives passed the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (HR503) by the considerable margin of 262-146. The voting crossed party lines; and precluded any mitigating amendments which would have neutralized the cause. The horse; without whom our nation would never have come into being, has been an integral part of the history of these United States ; ---When they said “Westward Ho!” they did not mean in a bright red gas guzzling Hummer!

The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act prohibits the transport, moving delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or donation of any horse for human consumption.

Horse meat is not sold for edible consumption within the borders of the United States . American horses are companion animals who are raised for many reasons --- to become great athletes, as service animals, as working animals, as beloved pets, (similarly to canines) --- never for food! The somewhat surreptitious brutal slaughtering of all types of American horses for human consumption is done within our borders in three foreign owned plants (two are in our President’s home state of Texas; the third is in Illinois) for export to satisfy the gastronomic desires of gourmands in Japan, Belgium, France and Italy where it is considered a delicacy.

It is an inhumane exigent answer to the problem of what to do with America ’s unwanted horses. This is not the solution; and is unethical and unbecoming of our cultural background. Responsible breeding aside, the solution is finding the right home ( charitable equine farms are burgeoning and flourishing in this country) for any horses that are unwanted and unclaimed. Those who cannot survive, or are too infirm to have any quality of life can be inexpensively euthanized by a licensed veterinarian; and their remains disposed of accordingly as one would do for any family pet. Any argument to the contrary by any individual or group (professional or not!) is spurious and speaks to that particular group's selfish twisted interests; and the unbridled hubris of man.

Now known as S1915 the bill is being held up in the commerce committee in the senate. While we are working to get The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act S1915 signed into law, the slaughtering goes on unabated.

I implore every United States senator to CO SPONSOR The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act S1915 so that the holds are released and when Congress reconvenes, after the mid term elections on November 7 it goes immediately to the floor for a vote --- on its way to being signed into law this year, by our President.

Let us win one for a genuine American hero--- man's other best friend --- the horse!

Written in loving memory of 2005 Eclipse Award winning thoroughbred champion Lost In The Fog (February 4, 2002 -September 17, 2006), for whom his human connections always did right.

Great ideas about setting up myspace.com and care2.com Can we do this?

We have to be very careful with any kind of media...you don't really know who is on our side and it could backfire. Imagine if you got someone like Glen Beck to use this and he was pro-slaughter!!! We need to stay away from that stuff. Let the professionals handle the media.

Posted by: ShelleyA at October 30, 2006 8:55 PM

CARE2.COM -

What we need to do is contact those members and those members have additional friends, something like MySpace. One member may have 300 friends, another 232, and so on... So with that group we can reach many.

I was almost finished calling the Senators, need to go back. Decided to call them in the afternoon because many maybe doing it in the morning.

Posted by: Socorro at October 30, 2006 8:56 PM

CARE2.COM -

They don't allow anyone to post anything negative against the welfare of the animals. Paul McCarthy, along with HSUS had their petition on this site.

They are pretty careful, notice PETA is not associated with this group?

Posted by: Socorro at October 30, 2006 8:59 PM

Renee,

Exactly. I've only met one horse in well over 30 years that I would have euthanized even though he was perfectly healthy. He was a huge draft/TB cross that was dangerously unpredictable. The first time I went into his stall, he came right up to me and nuzzled my hair. A split second later he whirled and let fly with both hind hooves which hit the wall at the level of my head. I leapt out the stall just in time. Another split second later, he was fine again.

Over a six month period he sent three people to the hospital with serious injuries and had destroyed several stalls (kicked right through the 2" oak boards through the outside wall).

As gorgeous as he was, if he had been mine, he would have been euthanized. Taking a horse like this to an auction would be irresponsible. What if someone had bought that horse for their kid? I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I had later found out that horse had killed someone.

Although the pro-slaughter people say this is exactly why slaughter is necessary, selling a horse like this to ANYONE is just plain wrong. Someone still has to handle these horses and that puts human lives in danger. Further, a horse like this should not be in a trailer with dozens of other horses, just too aggressive.

We allow serial killers to be humanely euthanized, why not our horses?

Posted by: joyce moore at October 30, 2006 9:01 PM

I am a soldier...not an accountant, lawyer, etc...but I am a true-bloodied animal lover...honey I carry cat food, and dog food in my car always...just in case...

But I will help in anyway to save our horses and animals...large or small.

Posted by: JOAN ROYA at October 30, 2006 9:02 PM

ShelleyA,

I'll work on setting up a group on MySpace. What do you want me to call it? It has to be something that will catch the attention of people who are not familiar with this issue.

Should I just keep it brief and call it, STOP THE SLAUGHTER OF HORSES?

Posted by: joyce moore at October 30, 2006 9:07 PM

We are ALL foot soldiers in this war. ALL of us have special talents, mainly our ability to feel for animals and what they go through.

Posted by: joyce moore at October 30, 2006 9:10 PM

joyce,
I couldn't have said it better. We don't kill our children because they misbehave or have problems...we work with them. I wish I could work with any animal that had some kind of problem, to see if I could make a difference in their in their lives. It's part of me. If the animal will kill some one that's a whole different story.

Posted by: Renee Antaya at October 30, 2006 9:10 PM

###

Joan, your are nothing less than an angel.

Joyce, I think we all know the answer why so many horses aren't humanely euthanized. It would cost the owners money to do so. The people that allow their horses go to slaughter just don't care about them.

Joan,

I'm glad I'm not the only one who carries food/water around (and leadropes, leashes, etc.)!!

This came in handy when I worked in a bad area of Detroit. There were two dogs from the junk yard across the street who liked spending their days under my truck in the parking lot. Every morning I would fill my food/water bowls for them. Although many vehicles were broken into or stolen, mine was never touched!

Posted by: ShelleyA at October 30, 2006 9:14 PM

I'm not very familiar with MySpace. I've just recently signed up with them to try and find my nephew (another heartbreaking story).

Basically, you create a group in any of the various catagories such as 'Animals' and set it up as a public group so anyone can read the posts.

Thanks or all the update leading up to the Breeders Cup. Though I had heard of it before this year, I really didn't know much about and don't think I've ever watched it, but now, thanks to you and Barbaro I'm getting very excited about it!

Bobby
Praise God, ACN for you! I hope you'll manage to be awake when Peter comes to visit this afternoon. Maybe he will explain why you didn't see him yesterday sleepy boy!!!! I continue to pray that God will heal and protect you. I'll chenkon you later tonight, magnificent horse.

For those of you who have asked, my surgery is scheduled for Thursday 8:30am. I expect I will be out of it for a few days but hope to be getting Barbaro updates via Cheryl Jones (if Barbaro lets her use her computer that is).

Thank you all for your support. I wish I could concentrate on anything but this right now, but I know you all understand.

If I could ask a favor - every night before I go to bed I light candles for Barbaro, Foggy, S1915, MOEQ, Dr R and Jacks. Could someone do that for me (initials LSH). The only time I missed one (when I was sick) Barbaro didn't have a good night. So, yes I am superstitious - he is my inspiration - he could have given up at any time but chose to stand up and fight. I plan to do that too.

Thank you all

Joyce Moore,
You sound like a caring and aware person. I, too, have met one horse in my life that probably should have been put down. He attacked a baby colt, by knocking down the wood partition between his and the colts stall, chewed off the colts ears and was about ready to kill it when someone came to the rescue. The horse was a maniac and was banned from the ranch after that where we had our horses, thank Goddess!

So, yes there are certain animals that need to go back to the devine animal healer, think about things and reincarnate later as a nice horse that people will like!
