    Barbaro Updates: 110

    updates are now here.

Update 884: Barbaro "mania" continues as Barbaro is on the Today Show, the front page of the Wilmington News Journal (update 883) and Channel 4 news in New York (I think from an e-mail I received). Five months!

A lovely morning at Fair Hill, and certainly crisp. For me work has quietened down considerably (phew). First set I galloped a 2yo in company a mile and a quarter. Both went very nice and evenly. This was after a day off after their first "work", so it could have been anything but relaxing. For the second set I just shedrowed a horse. She will do this for a couple of days before going to the track. The third set, well I could not wait for this. He was going to the gate. The gate crew are big Eagles fans. I wear my Brett Favre shirt with pride everyday day from fall to spring. Well all I can say is after yesterday's football the banter at Fair Hill this morning is quite fun! (and the horse was good in the gate, then worked a half).

As I was behind the gate I got to talking to Fen, who gallops for Graham Motion (and gallops Film Maker). Film Maker and Better Talk Now both worked yesterday on the turf (steeplechase track) and went well. They are due to ship to Keeneland tomorrow (fly) and will likely have one more work this weekend as they prepare for the respective Breeders' Cup races.

No Barbaro update yet, will know more about when that will happen when I get back from Fair Hill after my last set.

Update 883: A nice article on Barbaro and New Bolton Center in general: Kentucky Derby winner's spirit wins over medical staff. The following is an excerpt:

"He definitely has a personality," said Kasey McCafferty, the charge nurse in the intensive care unit and natal intensive care unit at the hospital. "He has bit me and kicked me. He can be feisty. He's not nasty and he's not trying to hurt anybody, but he's a stinker. He can get full of himself.

"Every time you see him, you have to pay attention because he's always messing with you. He makes you prove that you know what you're doing. Once you do that, he's fine."

McCafferty was laughing when she said that, as she looks forward to seeing him every day.

She watches him bend his ears back and scrunch up his face like a kid trying to avoid eating spinach when he doesn't like something. She said he breaks out in a sort of smile when he decides he wants to have some fun with the staff.

A quick reminder that today's update will be later today now that Michael is in Keeneland preparing Round Pond for the Breeders' Cup.

Update 882: Just spoke to Sabina Pierce, who is now out of hospital and back at home. Sabina is very grateful for all the support she has received from the site.

Update 881: No update for Barbaro this evening. I just spoke to Peter who had no further information since this morning. It is likely that as we approach the Breeders' Cup updates will likely be once a day now that Michael is in Keeneland.

Update 880: Collier Hill took the Sky Classic in Woodbine: Collier Hill digs deep to hold off Go Deputy in Canadian International. I have to confess I did not see the race, but I am so psyched Dean McKeown rode the winner. I worked with Dean many years ago at Richard Whitaker's. It was a time when Richard's stable was pretty decent. I am not sure of its status now, but then we had Orient, Clantime, Jo Sugden and Tobermory Boy. Basically some pretty good sprinters. Dean was the stable jockey, coming up from Newmarket where he could not buy a winner. When he came to Richard's he had his three horses to look after and basically rebuilt his riding career. He is also a great horseman, and a good guy. Anyway, I have not followed his career much since I have been to the US, but I assume this is a big winner for him. Another person working at Richard's that same year is my Beeders' Cup host, Bob Hatfield. Basically not only did we have a pretty good year at Richard's, but it was fun too.

I went to the Fair Hill Three Day event today for a couple of hours. It turned out one of the competitors was someone I knew when I was a kid in England, Robin Walker. Unfortunately he was eliminated before the final day so I did not get a chance to catch up (either that or he just decided not to compete in the final leg). May be I will get over there a little earlier next year!

Update 879: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (saturday night). I just spoke to Peter, who had heard from Michael, who had heard from Dr. Richardson.
update sunday, october 22, 11:00 am

Update 878: Today's big race is in Canada: Sky Conqueror aims to keep on rolling in Canadian International. As the name of the race suggests, it does attract plenty of international interest. Here is Sue McMullen's preview of the horses running in the race that have traveled from Europe:

Included in the European line-up for today's Canadian International at Woodbine are the Aga Khan's mare Kastoria, trained by John Oxx who wouldn't take a horse across the Irish Sea on a wild goose chase let alone the Atlantic, plus the daughter of Selkirk is in great form having won her last three including the Group 1 Irish St Leger (beating Yeats who is due to run in the Melbourne Cup), a Listed race and a Group 3, when she beat another in this field, the grand old veteran Collier Hill who at eight-years-old has won 13 of 43 races, including two over jumps and been placed 16 times (10 seconds) winning more than £1 million in prize money. This extraordinary and consistent individual is trained by Alan Swinbank in Yorkshire and although he doesn't exactly have a typical profile of a horse running at Group level nobody's told him that and he even mixes it occasionally with the 'big boys', including a valiant second to Japanese superstar Heart's Cry in the Dubai Sheema Classic in March. Good luck to the old boy and what marvellous fun his owners must have shuttling around Europe, Dubai and now Canada to watch him.

Blue Monday is a definite danger among the overseas raiders, having been only a length third behind David Junior (who heads for the BC Classic) in the Coral Eclipse, third in the Juddmonte International and won his last start, the Group 3 Dubai Duty Free Arc Trial at Newbury. Another to fly the flag for the UK is also the youngest horse in the field, the Galileo three-year-old The Last Drop who ran second to Sixties Icon in the St Leger.

Update 877: Today's update will be delayed. Michael is on his way to Keeneland (Round Pond is there preparing for the Breeders' Cup). I will call Peter later today to get an update. Its likely coming up to the Breeders' Cup updates will be later in the day.

While we are waiting I thought you might enjoy this quick conversation Michelle Matz had with Eduardo Hernandez, Barbaro's groom. I had asked Michelle if she could ask Eduardo a few questions for us as Michelle speaks great spanish. Here is the brief conversation:

Michelle: When did you start taking care of Barbaro, and what were your initial impressions?
Eduardo: I started taking care of him last year in December. He was a very happy horse.

Michelle: When did you realize Barbaro was "special" ?
Eduardo: I realized he was a great horse after he won the Tropical Park Derby at Calder.

Michelle: What were your thoughts when you won the Kentucky Derby?
Eduardo: I was very happy, and I wanted to keep on winning.

Michelle: What are your thoughts now as Barbaro continues his recovery?
Eduardo: I am very happy he is recovering well. I really just want him to keep getting better.

    Five months and counting.

Thanks to you and Michelle for getting a brief "interview" with Eduardo! We all know how close he must have felt to Barbaro during the time he was his groom. Hope he will have nothing but good memories to treasure. And hope he knows how much we all appreciate him!

Barbaro, five months later we still marvel at everything you have shown us. May it be another good day for you, and for all who come here to learn and share in your spirit.

    Alex...

I am a regular viewer of the site (everyday), but never post a comment.

But I felt compelled to say (as have other people) what you have done by having the site and the good that has come from it is humbling and amazing.

We never know the plans God has and it is always amazing (I dont know why we all continue to be amazed at Gods grace?) how he bring good from bad things... (track surfaces...Mike Rea...anti-slaughter...veterinary funding...the general sharing of the love of racing...)

Something special is truly happening here... Gods grace abounds.

"CHRISTMAS IS COMING, THE HORSE IS GETTING FAT"...must be all the studmuffins and carrots!

Hay, all...plans are underway for Christmas in Barbaroland - someone else will be posting general info soon.

I'm working on a special project for New Bolton, but in my neurotic quest to keep it a secret I'm not posting the info here - I LOVE SURPRISES! I can tell you that the cost of participating is $10. each. So far there has been great enthusiasm and 4 dozen people have signed up!

If you're NOT one of the 100+ people who received an email from me since Friday am, and would like more information, please send me an email:
    mllebutterfly@sbcglobal.net

    Curious yet?

(This is a re-post from late last night...I will be posting it several times today to try to reach each "shift" of Barbaro-worshippers!)

BARBARO-Good morning beautiful Big Ole Boy!! We are hoping for ACN and keep expecting it to pop up any minute, fingers crossed...
    ###############

ERNIE-I went to Hazen's site late last night. It is about the saddest thing. He is such a cutie. I wrote a little note on his guestbook, nothing too serious, in case he reads it. I finally saw a pic of Erin Brennan also. I thought I would feel better "seeing" her precious little face, now I think I am more sad. Those two innocent fresh smiling faces-they are both so full of life!!

JOCK4HIRE-Why you're the prettiest boy I ever saw in my entire life! I ashamedly admit, I too, thought incorrectly you were of the male sort. I am so entralled that you are not!! It is more exciting that you are a girl!! OMG that is so COOL!! You have been getting to do a job always dominated by guys, and still love it! Amazing!!

    Good morning Barbaro!
    Good morning Fans of Barbaro!

A quick question. I caught the final moments of the Today show this morning just before 9 a.m. and Campbell mentioned they would be doing an update on Barbaro! I think on tomorrow morning's show? Anybody else hear that?

Posted by: Judy in Nazareth, PA at October 22, 2006 2:52 PM

I hope the Today show is doing an update. Remember Melissa Stark did a nice piece with Michael Matz right after everything happened but the network NBC has not done as much coverage since. Would love to see my favorite horse on my favorite morning program.

Thanks to Michelle and Eduardo for the interview. I'm glad he liked his basket.

    Great Jo,

None of us need be alone now! So,. . . What was it that clued you in ref: pic I posted? Cuz I'd not even realized anyone might think me to be otherwise. I was shocked last night when a member asked to have a date with me during a chat. Uh huh!! I responded by saying "aren't you a girl?" or something similar to it. Don't ask who the gal was. I wouldn't embarrass her again today! It's already too late for me, but I can spare her further carcking (carcking Fla. slang for cracking) up at her. "ROFLMAO" Someone else chatting on there, had mentioned to us that she'd thought we'd been flirting! Thought I'd come "Plum un-Trained" when I heard that one! LOL

Jo, I did look for Shelley's post yesterday, didn't find it right away, then got involved in a whole slew of phone calling to Senators and other gov't officials, over the anti-slaughter bill. Then proceeded to write Lord knows how many e-Mails to all 3 of my address books, begging that they help me in this effort to stop the insanity we've allowed in Tx. and Ill. Our American Icons? Committing murder on the gentlest, most innocent of the planets creatures, whom have faithfully served us since the beginning of time. I, for one, feel ashamed beyond belief! Got some cool responses too for all my begging and using the "if you're my friend, you'll" and the "if you ever loved me, you'll. . .etc". My threats worked quite well on their psyche'. Mostly these are my pals, but some biz connections too: owners, trainers, ex-riders, and jocks. Don't think I've got emails for even 1 groom. I know no grooms with a pc tho. We use the mechanical hotwalkers nowadays mostly. So I don't meet too many h/w anymore. I got a quick response from Chaplain Sam Ed Spence at LSP, who offered his help immediately and am sure he was faxing till his machine overheated yesterday. He's a wonderful man and am sure he would love to hear from anyone from here who would write him from his site."hint". RaceTrackChaplaincyTexas.org Bet some of you are surprised to know that we all (our US tracks) have "in house Chaplains"! They do some great work on the backsides of racetracks everywhere. Please e-Mail Chaplain Sam and comment on the web site and the efforts of RTCT! He'd love that. Ya'll can be such a great source of support. I'm responsible for his website design & maintenance, & hosting, and am proud of this one.

Hope ya know, I've come to adore being a part of the family, that is this forum. and love Barbaro and TWR's site, Alex (Dad?). I've had too much fun here!!

    Good Morning, Fans of Barbaro!

Lisa, Skyler, I finally checked yesterday's mail (was emotionally drained after the intense session wiht Avi and his owner...in the best sense. When a human "gets" the message from their horse, the emotional explosion from the horse is wonderful to see...the joy just bursts out of them) and my bracelet is here!!!! Thank you so much. I'm wearing it now with much pride and love for this wonderful group.

Five months - five of some of the most intense months - and its still playing out. Hang on, everybody...we all will need to read Maid Marion's insights for this coming week so we're all prepared for the shift in energies. Its gonna be intense.

LITF, am hoping you are one of the shooting stars in the sky...letting us see your beautiful light, my Long Time Sun.

Barbaro...what more can I say? Your strength, determination, wisdom (and a nip here and there for those who do NOT recognize your royalty) continue to help this group of people work to help as many living things as we possibly can. Shine on you crazy diamond.

Are there any veterinary people on the board? I need to ask some questions about what a "neurologic" horse can and cannot do from a movement/coordination POV because of what I observed Avi doing yesterday.

For those who are at Fair Hill today, enjoy this day. I'd come, but I need some down time to rest and write some poetry to close a chapter and let in the new.

    Take care, everybody.

    Healing, Love, Peace,
    Lyn Gilbert

CINDY A.-Thanks-I have been feeling pretty good, but cold weather seems to play havoc with the good ole arthritis in my old bones. I am owned by 3 cats, 2 dogs, and a couple of handfuls of chickens. They all live at the boyfiend's (oops) house though! My cats that lived here in my dad's house had to be put down with illnesses/2001 & 2003. I used to have goats,a wild turkey(died not too long ago), boyfriend had a horse at one time. She also had to be put down. It sounds like a bad place for my hairy children to be huh? We had to give away and sell goats, they became too much of a nuisance. Getting out, into folks horse pastures, horses chasing them trying to kill them...OMG it was really fun having goats, until you had to drag them back into their pens. Pet Nanny was a heavy nubian goat. Weighed alot, try dragging that across several pastures several times a day! The boyfriend had to catch her in a.m. before going to work, so she would be ok!! I miss them the most, they loved cantelope and honeydew melons. Pet Nanny would follow you like a dog and rub on your leg like one too! You would have loved her. We at one time had like almost 20 goats! They all kept having twins and it was so cool. All colors, different personalities. I am gonna cry alittle now. I miss them, but do not miss my boyfriend's BP going up chasing them after they jumped 6 ft electric fence!

How many animals do you have in total-How is Cahill? I think about how he is alot. I wrote a post to you , not sure when about him. You were more than likely asleep at that time. I was asking if he gets along better now than before the surgery? Less pain? How did you pick his name? I love it!

Thanks for the update and for relating Eduardo's comments, he must have a really close relationship with Bobby. Knowing how I feel about this horse, whom I've never met, I can only imagine how those who are really close to him must feel!

    Bobby
Prasie God, the ACN updates continue! I pray you will have a good day, under God's protection. Hope you get your outside time; if it's cold up there, stay warm; enjoy your visitors. I hope Eduardo gets to visit you frequently, I'm sure it' a special time for both of you. I'll check on you later, magnificent horse.

5 months and counting. That's a long time for a big boss horse like you to be confined to an ICU stall. No wonder when you go outside you are so excited to see cows, and kitties, and blowing leaves!! You are such a good patient. Keep growing that hoof and follow doctor's orders. Everyone loves you so much. That is evident every day. Butterfly kisses big guy.

Alex, thank you again for the wonders you work on this site.

Mike, I hope you are enjoying every moment of being home full time now. I pray the insurance goes through soon and you will be continuing your PT program and gaining strength daily. I hope you have the best time at the BC. You deserve every wonderful moment, Mike!!! God watch over you daily.

jock4hire....just call it female intuition. The more of your posts I read, the more I thought you sounded like a girl. I didn't dare say anything in case I was barking up the wrong tree and you were a boy in touch with their feminine side! I wish I'd been in chat when one of the girls made a pass at you...that must have been hilarious!LOL

Sounds like you're doing a great job for the anti-slaughter bill, and it's really exciting that you have so many contacts within the racing circle who you can threaten and blackmail if they don't help you! ;-)

I emailed Sam and thanked him from all of us...he sounds like a great guy!

You have some great links on the website, especially Tom Chapman's art...WOW!!!!
Everybody...check it out. I'm still looking at the racing pictures...they're amazing! And our Barbaro is in there, and Lost in the Fog, and other much loved friends! 'Bareback Handicap' is sooooo funny...you have to go and look!!

    DORA,
Sounds like you've been lucky enough to have enjoyed alot of critters, and it's sounds like a great place for hairy children! When you've owned that many your gonna have alot pass over the rainbow bridge. I've had a little experience with goats ( as a child) and found them to be very loving animals, alot like dogs BUT they are a problem to confine! I'd love to have a couple now but I've got my hands full. I have enough to do before work as it is, no time to chase goats around! I have 5 horses, 2 I ride and 3 old ones that are retired. 2 are TBs, 1 Qhorse a paso fino and Tenn Walker. I'm 50 so I decided gaited is the way to go now hence the last two. I have 10 dogs, all throw aways that I found or found me, I'm a sucker! We have 55 acres so plenty room for animals but it does get costly.
I do know what you mean about arthritis I have that too! I guess most ole gals get the achy joints now and then! cindy a

A neoprene "horse boot" is a leg wrap that goes around a horse's lower leg that protects the leg, made of a fabric like they use for wet suits/for surfing and has a velcro closure. We put them on our horses before we loaded them in the trailer, ie., guards against injuries. No to be worn when riding.
And no I don't get any advertisements for them!

Anyone know what happened yesterday? I thought Funny Cide got third, with Carminooch taking first? Did something change after the race?

    Race 5 Woodbine: E. P. Taylor S. - Grade: 1

I am taking Arravale, Angara and Latice.

Race 7 Woodbine: Pattison Canadian International S. - Grade: 1

There are some great horses in this race, Go Deputy, Relaxed Gesture, Sky Conquerer.

This one is really hard, never know how its going to end up, but I want to see Kastoria do well, She is the only filly in the field.

    Sky Conquerer, Relaxed Gesture, Kastoria

    Thats my pick...

oh ok...Phew, thought I was really losing my mind. I really like West Virginia and that was not his best race, he is much more capable. If you remember, he is the one who missed the break and even stumbled, so third is actually great considerring his start. I like him alot and Zabeel Racing paid big bucks for him too. Wish Funny would of got in the top 3 though.

    They're talking about Woodbine now!

I'm going for Ambitious Cat , Barancella and Ready's Gal in race 5

Meteor Storm and Go Deputy in race 7

And I have to go for our Moss Vale in race 9! :-)

Jock4hire: What a fabulous addition you are to our family! Thanks so much for being here and sharing so much good stuff with us. Have emailed Chaplain Sam . . . bet his inbox is overflowing by now! Hope you prepared him. A mere suggestion gets a lot going on this site! LOL

Keep LindaH in your prayers. Light candles. She is such a sweetie.

Welcome and great to have you onboard. Now we can ask more questions to an expert. Understood your HINT and did as you hinted.

    SUSAN H -
I too received an e-mail from Winnie, deleted it as I do not know the person.

    MARY L -
Thank you for the advise on the IGNORE feature on the Forum. I believe in "what you don't know, won't hurt."

As for asking permission to allow Alex to see Barbaro, a suggestion would be for one person to start a thread here saying:

"Dear Mr. & Mrs. Jackson, please grant Alex Brown permission to visit Barbaro."

Then all of us can continue with the same request right before we all make our comments. It is my understanding they check this site at times. That same day we do the same thing on NBC's site. When NBC contacts Mr. & Mrs. Jackson with our requests, perhaps they will allow him.

    ALEX -
Last, but not least, thank you again a million times. You have provided us with an outstanding site with many features that many places I'm sure don't have all in one. You know your stuff.

    Hi Susan,

Don't know what the ad is suggesting one might have to use the Neoprene boot for. Don't know about all areas of the country, and not sure how exactly how this one is designed, not specifically cuz this is a pretty generic brand
X type of ad, by the look. No matter

Neoprene is the same kinda material you might find on a surfer, it's what they make the wet suits out of. The boots made of Neoprene I've seen are most commonly used for hauling horses, (offers a little more padding than, say a cotton bandage would, and is easy to get it on the horses' legs), attaches with strips of velcro, or they may also have 3 elastic straps that snap. This is the most common type on the open market.

There is another Neoprene boot made entirely different from the one I've just described. This other style which is made specifically for using as an aide in healing. This boot is streamlined for fit, and would appear very tight around the leg to a beginner horseman. It's snug but never tight. Made for the same part of the leg as the former boot. This wrap is used primarily to hold a say, Furacin sweat in place on the legs, while generating added heat within the confines of the wrap. Say you needed to draw an infection from an opened wound that was somewhere above the ankle and below the knee. This is a very nice wrap as it stays where you put until removed, less chance of shifting or slippage. It'll tighten a slightly swelled leg also. If a horse had been standing on a hard surface for an extended period of time, the ankle area often will get hot and swell some or get puffy in that area. This boot takes that little puffiness right out of there in about 15 - 20 min. accompanied by a poultice for more severe swelling. I've even seen them substitute an ice boot with this wrap. However it's at best a substandard alternative in my opinion. The only plus factor is that it does hold a good deal of water. Hope that didn't sound like an uneducated explanation. I'm tired! After having had a wild night in my first open chatroom session. It was interesting and more fun than I've had in awhile, and really funny at times! Thanks to my FOB Family

Oh and,. . . YES I get these ads all the time. Maybe 2 or 3 times a day or less often. I've requested an opt out but they don't seem to hear me. Hope this was a help!

Smile, it'll give your face something to do!

New up date on Salvation from Beth.
She needs help posting picture also!

    Dear Friends of Salvation,

I hope that I am on the right site (if not would somebody please let me know where I need to write). I wanted to give you all an update on our beloved Salvation and thank you all so very much for your donations, support and prayers. I cannot begin to thank you all for the outpouring of support we received for Salvation and the other 18 horses that we rescued from the feedlot in Fallon Nevada.

It has been such a busy few weeks trying to get all of the horses taken care of with vaccinations, wormings medical care etc. etc… It is always a difficult process considering that we have no real information on these horses when they come in. The few that we do are heartbreaking. Two registered quarter horses, 6 and 8 years old. One the people had paid $10,000 for and was an amazing roping horse, but he had a knee injury so they sold him to slaughter. Our Veterinarian said that eventually the knee will fuse and he will be sound for trail riding. He is such a sweet boy and will work well in our programs with kids. Yesterday we were riding two of the “Dude Ranch” horses that were sold to slaughter to “thin out their herd”. You cannot imagine how sweet these girls are and how willing they are to please. We also know that four of the mares in the group are pregnant and will foal early next year. These are just a few of the stories. It is just amazing to me that anyone would consider it “a good option” to kill these beautiful babies.

Now for the update of our little guy….

The first few days were a little scary with him; he was so weak and malnourished. He was also so depressed, but after Benny (the orphaned calf) came, he started to cheer up and he began to eat…. and eat and eat. When he was strong enough we took him to UC Davis and what they found was incredible. The injury that he had sustained as a newborn was a compound fracture. It was an open wound and his leg was literally hanging on by a quarter inch. The Veterinarians could not figure out how he was able to stand after such a horrific break, and how the wound did not cause a horrible infection. It breaks my heart to think of the suffering this poor little guy had to go through with no mother to comfort him.

What is more amazing is that the break is healing perfectly. They said that it was a blunt trauma making it a very straight break so it is healing just as straight. He has a small infection in a pocket where the break occurred, and is being treated with antibiotics for a month. We will need to go back to Davis in a couple of weeks for follow-up x-rays and they may have to scrape the pocket where the infection is, but besides that they feel that he will make a complete recovery.

The Veterinarians told us that if he had come in when the injury occurred they would have only given him less than a 50-50 chance of survival-with treatment.

If his survival (first from the break than from the slaughterhouse) is not a miracle, I do not know what is.

The best news is that he is doing GREAT, and he is quite a character. He is so strong and quite feisty. We have had to keep him contained in his stall and paddock, but just a couple of days ago we were able to let him in to another corral so that we could begin to introduce him to other horses, and he had so much fun. I am attaching a couple of the photos and as you will be able to see he does not think he has any limitations. He loves everyone and plays all day long. We have many toys for him in his paddock, but it is so nice to see him being able to be a colt!

In the next couple of months, he (and Benny) will be able to go out with the other foals in a large pasture when they are weaned. UC Davis says that there is a good chance that he will be able to be a riding horse, but because the leg will always have to be monitored, and because we have all fallen head over heels for him, he and Benny will never leave the ranch. For those of you that are not familiar with our organization, we also work with children with special needs in therapeutic programs, so he will have a full life helping children that are also overcoming adversity.

I have asked UC Davis to put his leg x-ray on a CD so that everyone can see what a miracle his survival is. I hope to get it on our website soon.

We have also picked his formal name: We had a name contest and Salvation and Jeremiah received the most votes. Jeremiah means, “Sent from God” and we truly believe that he was, so his formal name is “Jeremiah Salvation” We call him Jerry for short making he and his calf friend “Ben and Jerry”.

Once again, I want to thank you all for your kindness. This amount of horses coming in a one time was a little overwhelming, but knowing that people all over the Country have been praying for our special friends has given us much peace.

We also appreciate more than you can imagine the donations that we have received. This has been a bad year for cruelty cases as well, and we are the only facility for abused and neglected horses to go to in our area, when they are seized for abuse and neglect. Currently we have 72 horses on the ranch. All that have been victims of abuse neglect or rescued from the slaughterhouse. We also are home to the police horses in our area, so we really have are hands full. Recently, we helped Sacramento County with a seizure of 11 horses from a Thoroughbred ranch. They were seized after neighbors complained after a tiny foal died of starvation. On Friday, I received word that we will be seizing the remaining 21 horses on the ranch. I will tell you that each and every dollar truly makes a difference, and since we are staffed completely by volunteers, every dollar goes to caring for the horses.

I also wanted to let you know if you ordered a “Grace Necklace” on our website, they will be shipped out this week.

That is all for now, but please know how much you have all touched our hearts.

I promise to keep you updated, and I hope that if any of you are ever in California you will come and visit our ranch, and meet salvation in person.

You can also get updates on our website: www.thegracefoundationofnorcal.org.

Thank you again and God bless you all!

    Beth

As I am trying to send this it would not let me attach the photos. Could someone that knows how to put them online, email me so that I can send you the photos to put on the board. Thanks so much! bdecaprio@aol.com

    Random political note:
To take advantage of HR 503 getting through the House, the Senate needs to pass their version of the bill this session. Otherwise, it starts all over again from scratch.

So, while a candidate's position is absolutely relevant to your personal decision to vote for him/her, the winners of this election, who take office in January, only become a factor for us if S1915 is not passed between now and the end of the year.

    Sally in Key West,

Hello again, I relayed a few incidents during the wild chat session and was in a rather euphoric mood last night. After having had a very busy day yacking on phone, sitting there on hold, all the while typing e-Mails and doing it in a rather frantic frame of mind. As I do believe the Anti-Slaughter bill to be my #1 Top Priority and should be everybody's #1 top priority on each of your various daily agenda's. For the days grow shorter and shorter.

C'mon ya'll, make that call. Barbaro says write that letter, and you feel mo betta!! C'mon now type this hype C'mon Ya'll Good Golly Molly, C'mon Ya'll Everybody say Nay to slaughter today C'mon say Nay!! Sing it loud C'mon Ya'll!!

This jock4hire is gonna be busy lookin' for another job!! Pony not moving as I'd hoped he would be by now. Doc says we'll give it a few more days before X-rays, cuz he is putting a good amt. of weight on the leg, and spends about 20 min. on the walker each day, playin'. Doc says he'll be okay with Bute to work a few races at night or in the a.m. Uh uh not my poor Puppy. NOT!! He's feeling good, but not joggin' as sound as I wanna see him jog. If he aint right, no work for him at night!! Call me a worrier but I refuse to ride a hurtin' horse. Even if his pain is mostly in my head. I'm considerate of his age also. He's a gelding and of no use for breeding prospect so he'll just have to be my lawn ornament who can still do a bit of hazing in the local rodeos when he gets better. Some would use a horse displaying no more pain than mine horse is right now. But I sure as hell won't risk his welfare, or my own. So, I'll likely bring him on home tomorrow I think for another week or the rest of the meet! Not sure yet, and will wait for next vet check before definite decision is made. My Ol' Puppy is not in any real pain presently. Yeah, . . he's on good drugs, anti-inflamatory, muscle relaxants, and Shelley I'm already takin' B/P meds daily for the rest of my life! That is enough don't ya think? Not big on pills either. Yucko!

jock4hire may just change call sign to Jockonline Gotta go read some more of these posts before they disappear and I can't locate them. LOL goofy girls huh?

The picture of Mike with Precisionist is enough to make you cry (well, I did). Mike is the most caring, sincere man you could talk to. I used to talk to him quite a bit a few years ago when they were at the old Farm. And he was kind enough to send me a numbered print of Rich in Dallas, one of the three horses they used in Seabiscuit. I talked to Sylvia a month ago and said, Gee , could you make me cry anymore? And she said how much they loved one another (Mike and Precisionist). A great place that deserves support.

Barbaro, so glad to here how great you are doing. I still check daily for your updates. You have become an even greater inspiration to me. A month ago my beloved Siberian Husky, Sasha was diagnosed with a very aggressive cancer. He is only six and I have been told that nothing can be done. However, I refuse to believe that and so does he. He came thru the operation just fine and at this time he is doing great. I have told him all about you and when I received your beautiful model the other day, he stiffed it and when I put it on the end table he laid down in front of it. I told him to look to you for inspiration. I keep thinking about Lost In The Fog and the gallant fight he fought. My Sasha has that same fighting spirit in him. We will both take this journey and fight it together. I will now pray for two miracles. Our animals are truly a wonderful gift from God and the thought of loosing them is unbearable.

Sleep well Barbaro, and have another comfortable night.

The BY refers to the stallion

The Out of refers to the mare

In March 1971, thoroughbred racing was preparing for a coronation. A magnificent colt named Hoist the Flag was blazing toward the Kentucky Derby, conjuring up images of his grandsire, Triple Crown winner War Admiral. "I don't think he'll ever get beat," raved his jockey, Jean Cruguet, "unless he falls down." As Hoist the Flag scorched through workouts at Belmont Park, onlookers watched with giddy anticipation. Everyone expected to see the colt back at the same track a few weeks later, capturing the Belmont Stakes to complete the Triple Crown sweep.

Then, horror. On March 31, as Hoist the Flag skimmed through a workout, he took an awkward step, hammering his full weight down on his right hind leg in a twisting motion. Without warning, his leg bones exploded. With Cruguet frantically pulling him up, Hoist the Flag hopped to a halt. The veterinarians' report was grim: The colt was mortally injured. When Hoist the Flag's impending euthanasia was announced, the shock reverberated throughout Belmont. At the last moment, two surgeons stepped in to make a desperate attempt to save the colt. So began an extraordinary series of events that has resonated across three decades, radically altering the history of racing. It is a story that may come to a remarkable and fitting conclusion this Saturday, as War Emblem tries for the Triple Crown

Sorry guy I was wrong, did find the artical on Hoist the Flag.

    part 2
Hoist the Flag's injury was catastrophic. His cannon bone, running from ankle to knee, had split vertically, and a four-inch long section had snapped off and slid out of place. Below it, the colt's long pastern bone, running from ankle to hoof, was utterly shattered.

In 1971, the standard treatment for a leg fracture was to apply a plaster cast. But a cast couldn't address so severe an injury. Because Hoist the Flag's bones were painfully fragmented and unstable, the colt was sure to lean heavily onto his opposite hind leg, leaving it highly prone to laminitis, an excruciating, often fatal hoof disease. Getting him to lie down throughout convalescence wasn't an option; because of their immense weight, horses suffer from impeded breathing and circulation when recumbent, so they can't stay down long. And efforts to get horses to tolerate suspension from slings had been disappointing. In the opinion of the attending veterinarians, Hoist the Flag was doomed.

Two surgeons disagreed. One was the late Jacques Jenny, DMV, a legendary innovator in veterinary orthopedics. The other was William Reed, DVM, who would later become famous for trying to save Ruffian. Examining the horse after the decision to euthanize had been made, Jenny and Reed brainstormed and came up with a new option: Using untried surgical techniques, there was a slim chance that they could save the colt. The owner asked them to try. It was, at best, a shot at the moon. "It was risky," remembers Reed. "Everything had to fall into place."

At Reed's equine hospital across the street from Belmont, Hoist the Flag was anesthetized and Jenny and Reed set to work. To repair the split cannon bone, they got creative. In Switzerland at that time, surgeons were treating the broken legs of skiers with a revolutionary technique called compression, in which bones were reconstructed, then reinforced with screws and plates. In skiers, compression stabilized bones, promoted rapid healing, and by preventing bone fragments from rubbing together, eliminated pain. Compression worked in 150-pound skiers; it was virtually untested in 1,100-pound horses. But it was Hoist the Flag's only hope. Jenny and Reed pieced the horse's cannon bone together, covered it with a metal plate, secured it with screws and hoped for the best.

Treating the pulverized long pastern called for additional innovation. After cleaning out the myriad bone fragments that were too crushed to save, Jenny and Reed used wire to weave the remaining pieces into place. They had to remove so much bone that there wasn't enough left to bear weight, so they tried another new technique, grafting bone from other areas of the horse's body directly onto the fracture. Hoist the Flag, his leg bound in a newly developed fiberglass cast, was slid into a recovery stall. The surgeons waited.

Hoist the Flag awoke. Soon after, he struggled to his feet. The leg held, and he stood without pain. He was soon walking comfortably.

Jenny and Reed had done the impossible. Hoist the Flag survived. He would become an exceptional sire, bequeathing his talent to generations of offspring. The story wasn't over. One morning in 1986, 15 years after Hoist the Flag walked out of Reed's hospital, a 2-year-old filly named Personal Ensign limped in. Fresh off a smashing victory in her first race, she had fractured the long pastern of her left hind leg in a workout, splitting the bone straight through. A glance at her pedigree revealed a striking coincidence: The filly was Hoist the Flag's granddaughter.

Had she been injured in her grandsire's day, Personal Ensign would never have raced again. But thanks to the pioneering work done on Hoist the Flag and other landmark cases, Dr. Reed and Larry Bramlage, DVM, were able to repair the injury with five compression screws. Personal Ensign not only returned to racing, she went on a rampage, becoming one of only two horses in the 20th century to retire unbeaten after a full career. She ran 12 of her 13 races on the repaired limb and retired dollar sound.

On the strength of her brilliant record, Personal Ensign won the chance to be bred to racing's greatest sire, Mr. Prospector. The result was a talented racehorse named Our Emblem, who went to stud in 1997. In 1999, his son, lithe and black, was born. In keeping with the family tradition of flag-themed names, they called him War Emblem.

This Saturday, from a box above the Belmont finish line, Dr. Reed will watch War Emblem, grandson of Personal Ensign, great-great grandson of Hoist the Flag, hunt for the Belmont Stakes and the Triple Crown, the prize his mighty forebear was seeking when he was injured on this same track. Thirty years after Drs. Reed and Jenny made a daring decision to save a great racehorse's life, their story has come full circle.

STEVE with kitten with distemper-What state are you in? We in Alabama have had some cases of puppies with distemper. I thought it was pretty much eradicated, but the vets here said they get different strains, some mild (which my sister in law's dog once had- it's treatable) or bad which as in case of poor kitten you discovered has to be humanely destroyed. It shocks me that it is still around, but I guess if you look at it one way...people who have mutitudes of animals unvaccinated and breeding-just perpetuates diseases. Horrible horrible situaiton. I am so sorry you had to go through that with the poor little cat.

JEAN- I certainly pray for the best with your SASHA. When my cat had surgery for cancer, she was already an elderly ole gal. I still got to spend alot more quality time with her, and she was feeling healthy and good for a LONG time. I pray your Sasha is cancerfree and healthy for a long time too!

It stopped his mount cold and he lost any chance to win afterwards, but at least he lit the board and salvaged a check He had a shot to win it too. Bummer Nuts! He did however win two last night at Lone Star Park so still a good weekend for the barn and that's a big plus! My vet is the best but,..we could have to actually pay him for these last couple of visits to check up on my Puppy's leg! My track vet is so soooo kind to us. Shots for dogs, worming meds, rabies shots, parvo etc. everything he's given to us! I keep trying to pay him and he keeps saying "hang onto it" like I may really need it to pay the BIG ONE soon to come. But I don't actually believe that. He's just a very remarkable man, compassionate to us poor folks. LOL Hah!And even when we lose we win, as Jim further spread the word of our Anti-Slaughter mission to his owners, the Trainer, and the jocks in the room today!! Thanks Diamond You the Man! Our family is growing stronger by the minute ya'll!! Gotta Love the Efforts from all of us!! We're blessed to have one another.

Speaking to all Texans or Oklahomans or Louisiana Darlins, if any of you racing fans, or visitors just here to see what the buzz is all about. If ya'll wanna take a day trip here to beautiful LSP. I got free passes for you . . . You, my extended family!! Just email here: hi2jock@hotmail.com with your name and how many passes you need Limit it to a reasonable amount of passes. They know me at LSP and would never believe I have more than 10 friends! Joke. But 10 isn't unreasonable unless 20 of you call with a 10 pass request. and whatever date you can make it here, and I'll have your passes waiting at the will call gate. You'll have to cover your parking and of course your bets and refreshments. But I'll get you in the door, and even into the winners circle to have your picture taken with a winning horse and jock that night!! Just to make it a little more excitin' for you. Yeah yeah I'm a sweetie at heart, just don't tell anybody, okay? You'd blow my tough gal rep. Yes my offer goes out to all of you FOB's and it will end when the meet ends in December!! Cuz after it's over my clout runs out! LOL Is that cool my Jewels? Still in that euphoric mood, and stll rather tired. But Barbaro's magic keeps on giving and has put me into that same spirit, and generous heart. Never Fail!

####Steve, so sorry about your kitten. How lucky the wee one to come into the home of a kind hearted soul!

###Jean in Ohio, will keep you and Sasha in my prayers. If you are drawn to integrative medicine, you may wish to check Dr. Andrew Weil's site for info on mushrooms used to treat cancers. Dr. Weil gave maitake mushroom to his own dog when he was diagnosed with cancer and he had years more quality time than predicted, amazing the vets. My dog was prescribed maitake and reishi mushrooms, along with "carnivora" injections which cured progressing mast cell tumors. Good luck to you.

"... research has shown that Agaricus blazei has anti-tumor and anti-viral activity, as well as moderating effects on blood sugar and cholesterol.

Oncologists in both Japan and Brazil use this mushroom in treatment protocols. I hope mushroom growers here will begin producing it as a gourmet species, because it is just delicious. In the meantime you can find it here in dried form as well as in extracts. One very good source for these is Fungi Perfecti in Olympia, Wash. (www.fungi.com).

I also recommend two other mushroom species, maitake and reishi, to cancer patients for their immune-enhancing and anti-cancer effects. Maitake (Grifola frondosa) is an edible mushroom known here as "hen of the woods" because in appearance it resembles the fluffed tail feathers of a nesting hen. In addition to its anti-cancer, anti-viral and immune-enhancing properties, maitake may also reduce blood pressure and blood sugar. Reishi mushrooms (Ganoderma lucidum) are too bitter to eat as food but are widely available in tea bags, capsules and liquid extracts. Animal studies have shown that reishi improves immune function and inhibits the growth of some malignant tumors; it is also a natural anti-inflammatory agent." -- Andrew Weil MD

    Steve,

I am so sorry to hear about your kitten. It is very sad, very difficult. You are to be commended for helping this little one.

I do feline rescue and foster care. Feline "distemper" (aka Panleukopenia) is highly contagious and unfortunately young kittens have a very high mortality rate. You made a very difficult, yet the right decision.

Hi All: I have a question for all you horse people. I have a two year old fillie in training who will be making her debut in a couple of weeks. She will not let any one get in front of her when she works. Fillies, Colts it doesn't matter; nobody has beat her yet. The problem is once she gets past them she pulls herself up. Forget about working alone, she won't do it. If she hears a horse coming up behind her she takes off again. Her exercise rider just thinks she does what she has to do and that's she's a little lazy. I tend to agree with her as she does get the job done. She also told me that she used to ride a horse named Kings Bishop who did the same thing. On the track it was a different story. Anyway, she worked again today with her jockey for the first time, beat what was next to her and stopped. The jockey loves her though and he is also not concerned. Anyway, my question is, do you think we should try her as a closer? The only problem I can see with that is trying to slow her down enough to let horses get ahead of her. She really doesn't like that. She is a competitive little girl. Very sweet though. If you could let me know what you think we could use all the input we can get. Thanks.

Hey Bobby: How are you today. Hope all is well. You keep being strong for us. We love you so much and want to see you go home someday. Remember, baby steps my friend.

Barbaro--Thank you for keeping a + attitude and heeding the healing vibrations as they weave their "magic" through your entier body including
your soul. Continue to stay tuned to the Cosmic
Consciousness, be patient, and you will continue to get better and better. You know it can not be otherwise. You are the main ingredient in many good works that have taken place, are in the process of taking place and are yet to come to the forefront. No other horse can be as insperational as you on a global,
make that universal, level. Winning races on a race track was only the lead up to what is and what is yet to be with you as the catalist. You did not ask for the position, but are doing a beautifull job of fulfilling it. So,keep that soft chin up, enjoy those carrots etc. and get
as many sun beams as possible. That will be beneficial to both you & your Doc who is less stressed himself of late.
##################################Got a job! Worked one week already. Part Time(28+ hrs)--not enough to pay all bills but it helps. Have never been one to fiddle with finacial ins and outs but necessity dictates a little dabbling so, like it or not, will get my feet wet with loans etc. I do not like the idea of being in debt.
That simply is not my style. Oh well, one should use whatever resources available to make ends meet so, tomarrow my education starts regarding
    imroved $ management.
    Will not overlook recalling senators.

    Jock4hire,

I was at Lone star last night for the races. I was trying to figure out which pony rider you were, but that was before I read the post about your horse being kicked and that you weren't ponying right now. I have a question about the horse at the end of the post parade. He is a gorgeous horse. I watched him while he was tied up in the paddock before the races started, and he was so excited! He really drew a crowd. What kind of a horse is he? I have always admired him. Thanks.

You saved the kitten for as long as he was meant to be with us before crossing the bridge. Take solace in knowing the kitten was loved, cherished and cared for in comfort in his final days. We need more people like you and the vet who helped you on this earth.

DEBBIE LA--the article where Mrs. J. talks about Quiet American's babies....hmmm...probably June or so. I think (but am not sure!) that it was between MIH moving into Bobby's stall in June, and "L" day on July 13. Try Googling Quiet American and Jackson and see what comes up. I can't for the life of me think WHICH publication carried the story.

WELCOME to all of our new family members!

SUSAN W and JAZZ--I know why Donovan McNabb is barfing on the field. It's all that Chunky Soup* his mom makes him eat! LOL

*Chunky Soup is not to be confused or affiliated in any way with Chunky Pony, nor with Chicken Soup for the Soul. The manufacturers of Chunky Soup have not, expressly or impliedly, given Donovan McNabb permission to vomit on the field of play nor in any other location. Void where prohibited.

So, sleep well and heal. Be careful getting up and down, and no clowning! Have ACN, and congratulations on successfully completing another comfortable week !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just watched the Grace Foundation's video, "Amazing Grace", which I had not seen before. If anyone is looking for salvation of any kind, you will see it in action on that video. It is not - even although there is a disturbing image to begin with of a young foal who has died of starvation at the hands of another human - a violent or unbearable video. It is, instead, incredibly uplifting and inspiring. If you have not see it, please do... you too will be a believer.

There is a good article on Polytrack and how differently horses are running on it than on dirt which was published in the SF Chronicle today. (May have been posted by Alex earlier, from the Washington Post.) It sounds like the turf horses will have a better switch to that surface than they do to dirt, making those races more competitive for both styles. Doesn't sound like they'll be faster, though...

This same author, Andrew Beyer, wrote a beautiful piece about Lost in the Fog back in 2005, entitled "Out of the Blue". Any of you Fog lovers may enjoy this...

Steve so sorry to hear about the little kitten. Bless you for caring for him and giving him love for the short time he was here. There must have been a need for kitten angels.

    #####
Dora feline distemper is a different virus from that which affects dogs The canine distemper affects raccoons, too. We lost many raccoons a couple of years ago to canine distemper. The feline strain affects ferrets and other members of that family like skunks. It isn't as rampant as canine distemper, and Steve's little one probably came from a litter who were all affected. Very sad. And so preventable. I think I recall Steve saying something about the kitten being a feral. It's tough to contemplate that a whole lot of feral cats may now be suffering from the same horrible disease. Steve and his wife tried, but the poor little baby probably didn't stand a chance

    #####

I cracked up when somebody said something about Donovan McNabb throwing up during the game because of all the chunky soup his momma gives him. But seriously, has anyone noticed how often athletes get sick during games? I wonder if they are getting dehydrated or something?? just bad soup? Poor Donovan

We are coming up on the last few days of October, and the senators are back on the 13th of November. Back to the barrage!!!

This is a nice new story, even if they did mix up the dates of the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness:

    http://www.delawareonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061022/SPORTS09/61022036

    A few paragraphs:

“Every time you see him, you have to pay attention because he’s always messing with you. He makes you prove that you know what you’re doing. Once you do that, he’s fine.”

McCafferty was laughing when she said that, as she looks forward to seeing him every day.

She watches him bend his ears back and scrunch up his face like a kid trying to avoid eating spinach when he doesn’t like something. She said he breaks out in a sort of smile when he decides he wants to have some fun with the staff."

Sleep well and keep growing that hoof, sweet Barbaro!

Who is Man In Havana? Not only is he owned by Mr and Mrs Jackson, but he is no other then Barbaro's baby brother, they share the same dam.

Man In Havana registered a work yesterday, here it is. This is sooo cool. I have never been so excited to see a horse work in my life. His training has begun!

    Date: October 21, 2006

CHERYL JONES-I did not know that about the distemper virus. I knew it was called panleukopenia or something in cats, but ? in dogs. Gosh, there are reaccoons everywhere at boyfriend's house.I wonder what other animals in the wild besides feral cats/dogs etc. get distemper? I have honestly never looked it up. I know here in Alabama, government goes out and puts rabies vaccinations into bait for raccoons and other animals. I do not know if it contains distemper vac. or not. Hopefully it does! the info you gave me was very interesting. I am going to do a little research on distemper, I think.

    Patty in Dallas,

Are you talking about a big dappled gray horse? Or a dark brown or bay horse? Or the bay that the escort for the line-up when they come over from the receiving barn? A girl rides that one. The gray and the bay that are ridden by the Outriders I believe are both Quarter horses. The gray horse that Robbie rides is by far the class act out of all the Outriders horses. That horse would've been a super trick horse. He's very smart and does everything Robbie tells him too. He's a beauty that one. I'd like to put him in the show arena. He'd win loads of prizes. Unfortunately it's not a lucrative living.

And lemme know next time you wanna go to the races! I'll get you some passes, it won't save you a lot but it'll save you some!! And anybody wanting to go, gimme a days notice Or at least a few hours before post time. ACN? Be Unified ya'll!!

Help Save Our Horses from the Slaughterhouse! Wednesday, October 25, 2006; Monday, November 13, 2006. Call your two senators and urge them to cosponsor S.1915. Call the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask for your senator's office. Your 30-second phone calls urging your senators to please cosponsor and support S.1915 to protect horses from slaughter - is critical.

Venus du Vey, the 19 yo Selle Francaise Stallion who disappeared from his pasture in Georgia while his owner was out of the country, and was presumed stolen, was found dead in a well in the pasture. He apparently broke his neck in the fall and so did not suffer. The TWF thread reporting him stolen and linking to NetPosse.com starts here:

    Hi everyone and hello Bobby!

Just watched the Today Show's update on our boy. It was wonderful seeing him in action again. Does anyone know when they filmed him? He looked great. I don't comment everyday, but I never miss coming to this site, usually two or three times a day. You all are wonderful, and horses have so many caring friends. What you have done for people and horses is a miracle in itself. Bobby you continue to be a miracle everyday! I love you big guy! You keep up the healing, someday I will stand at a fence and watch you in a field munching grass! Maybe I can stand at another fence and watch your foals running with their mothers. I've added this to my list of goals, you know like seeing the grand canyon, going to Disneyland, seeing the miracle horse in person! He's at the top of the list right now! I believe in miracles, I believe in Barbaro!!!

    Good morning sweet Barbaro...

Glad to hear you had a nice weekend and your positive spirit keeps on going. We are all behind you 100 percent.

New week, new day, start calling, faxing, handing out pamphlets, word of mouth, whatever it takes to get the anti-horse slaughter bill passed.

So sorry to hear about the litle kitty, and the beautiful stallion's fate in Georgia..My heartful prayers to the owners and friends.

Continued to pray for everyone's involvement...Thanks Alex, Tim, The Jacksons, Dr. R., Staff, and all Fans of Barbaro for unity and support..and the healing of our loved one, Barbaro.

Mary S, I look forward to your prayers of encouragement every day.

Let us remember the rescues for horses, Missouri, Indiana, Miracle Horse, and now I noticed on the thread Horse Haven, Michigan...close to the border...

Has anyone got updates on any of the rescues or ones who have sponsored?

I wish I have plenty of money or won the lottery...I would have a Noah's ark, a haven for all animals, large or small.

I admire the ones that posted last week, selling their homes and buying a place to start a horse rescue...Just heart-warming...tears of joy.

Keep the candles burning...we are fighting a just cause, a cause that will keep our horses running free.

Good Morning FOB's from the West Coast!

Thanks for the tip on the TODAY show - it is not on here for another 45 min.

Spinach bleck P-U - Barbaro you are the best! I don't think NBC will let you go - they are just having too much fun w/you. Don't kick the staff too hard - they need their legs just like you do . . .

Don't forget tbfriends.com up in Northern CA for an uplifting blog about horses and humans.

Off to fax some more to the Senators later today.

    jock4hire,

Yes, it must be the horse that Robbie rides. For one of the races, I stood at the starting gate to watch the horses break from the gate instead of at the finish line. His horse is the one that stands at end of the gate in front of the ambulance. Just about 3 seconds before the gate opened, the horse moved up several steps, so the ambulance could speed off. BTW, what a rush at the gate! It was a great to see a race from a different perspective!

Thank you for the offer of the pass to get into Lone Star, but I am a stars player, so I only pay a dollar to get in. However, I would love to talk to you. I will email you at your website.

Morning, Barbaro, our Today star! You looked great, and such a nice upbeat segment, we're not the only ones saying you're a miracle. Have a good day munching some grass, eating some treats, but no kicking the nurses, you silly horse!

God bless Barbaro, make that hoof grow, his bones mend strong.

God bless Linda H, Sabina, Cahill, Daisy, Foggy, little kitty, Felix, Alibi, BDude, Opie, Darlin, Maizie, Sadie and all who need God, help and care today.

    Have a great day everyone!

Good morning everyone. I'm reposting the list of the senators that are the "key to our success"

    Senator Harry Reid
    202-224-3542 phone
    202-224-7324 fax

Also, please stay after your own senators. Those that are not on board yet to co-sponsor.

Those that are already co-sponsors to let them know how important this issue is to you as a constituent so they will help move it.

Remember, at this point, most of them know the details. They just tally up the calls at the end of the day. Keep it short, polite and courteous. It's the NUMBER of calls that will make the difference.

It is urgent to remember.....our time is extremely limited now. Our work has to be complete before the Senate returns on Nove 13.

While it will be two years before Barbaro’s kid brother hits the track, his half-brother, Man in Havana, is gearing up for his racing career. His mother is La Ville Rouge. The colt is working out at the Fair Hill Training Center under the tutelage of Michael Matz and is slated to make his debut this fall.

Man In Havana and his sire, Quiet American, are named after books written by British author Graham Greene, a favorite of Gretchen Jackson’s father.

"He’s a big horse with a lovely shoulder," Gretchen Jackson said. "Unlike Barbaro, he might take some time to show what he has. But that’s true with all of Quiet American’s foals."

La Ville Rouge was bred back to Dynaformer a day before the Kentucky Derby. A foal is due next spring. Could Barbaro’s siblings also be blessed with his talent?

"It worked once," Gretchen Jackson said. "We’ll see."

    Found it!!!!
This is just part of it, go to updates July # 189
Under New hope for Barbaro fans in Kid Brother.
    Thank Alex, good read!

    Maria -

You may not be a regular poster, but what you said was perfectly stated. Amazing, isn't it?

I pray Barbaro had another restful night and another healing day.

Alex, great reading about him. He really seems to know what is going on. That's amazing, too.
Thank you, as always, for keeping us informed each "step" of the way. We appreciate it probably more than you realize.

    ###

    Hi again:

I posted this in the forum, then got to thinking it might be worth posting here as well.

    -----------------------------------------------

You may already know this, and if so, I apologize for the repeat.
Sen. Barack Obama from Illinois is considering a run for the White House in 2008. Since IL is cursed with one of the slaughterhouses, I'm wondering if it wouldn't be useful as a "focus point" with him.

"Mr. Obama, this issue is very important to me. How you vote on this will decide how I vote for you, whether it be for Senate re-election or in 2008".

I read about his interest in running on the Yahoo news page if anyone else would like to see it.

    -------------------------------------------------

Sorry if this ends up being repeated information.

    I BELIEVE IN BARBARO

    Janice

Sorry my list doesn't have the e-mail addresses. Everytime I try to post the links, it won't accept my post. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

If anyone has the e-mail addresses, could you please post them here.

    Thanks!
