    Barbaro Updates: 83

    updates are now here.

Update 711: Congratulations to Better Talk Now and all his connections: Better Talk Now outduels challengers for Sky Classic victory. In typical Better Talk Now style, he dropped back, and came with a late run, and won by a head. I just spoke to Adrian Rolls, Graham Motion's assistant, who gave me the quick update. It appears they are no longer considering the Melbourne Cup (according to the article) but it is nice to see Graham proved correct in his assessment that Better Talk Now is as good as ever.

I just spoke to Peter Brette, no later update today on Barbaro. He had not heard anything, which he assumes is a good thing.

Update 710: Here is the Orlando Sentinal article: Barbaro's Big Breakthrough: Although his survival remains in doubt, the Derby champ's injury (and recovery) leaves promising legacy for his fellow thoroughbreds. I was interviewed for this article, so was excited to see it going to press today. The article is another great read (much like those in Update 709), but of course I have to highlight where I am quoted and this site is referenced:

"You think of athletes as holding out for contracts; they're getting [in trouble] for positive drug tests. Athletes don't necessarily have the best [reputation]," says Alex Brown, an exercise rider at Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland. "And here's a horse that just did his best, he was brilliant, he just goes home at night and eats some hay and then he breaks his leg in front of a national audience."

Ever since the Preakness, Brown has kept the world updated on Barbaro's condition with daily posts on timwoolleyracing.com. Tim Woolley has a stable at Fair Hill, and Barbaro trained for the Preakness nearby. The Web site had been around for a while, before anyone knew who Barbaro was. It used to get maybe five hits a day.

Now, thousands visit it daily. Brown receives information from the insiders -- those such as Richardson and Michael Matz, Barbaro's trainer -- and he posts the news on the site, much to the appreciation of Barbaro lovers everywhere.

Update 709: I bought the Philadelphia Inquirer, thinking they may run the same Barbaro story that was written for the Orlando Sentinal (which I have not yet posted) and lo and behold, they wrote a couple of their own very cool articles: STANDING BY BARBARO and A happy horse could take six months to a year. Both Mike Jensen articles are fantastic, and you will learn a lot about Barbaro's current condition (foot growth etc.) as well as insights into Mrs. Jackson. The following is an excerpt from the second article:

The cast on Barbaro's right hind leg is mostly precautionary. All the signs are good on that front, but Richardson said, "There's still no guarantee we can get his left hind foot to the point where he can be in a field and be a happy horse."

The hoof is growing - about 18 millimeters in the heel area, Richardson estimated. "He's got to go three times that, at least."

If that took six months or longer, "we hope that his comfort and the stability of the foot improves during that interval," Richardson said. "In other words, it's not all or none. It's a very gradual progressive thing, and the big problem is that we still need to get the bottom of his foot to completely heal. That's a big deal."

Update 708: Oddly I was just on a horse racing site to see if there was any more fall out from yesterday's Georgeous George win (nothing) and then I checked my e-mail, a follow up from Sue McMullen follows:

Just been confirmed that Ballydoyle are to appeal yesterday's decision to ban Shamus Heffernan for 14 days for what the Ascot stewards adjudged to be improper riding and team tactics.

An exasperated and understandably furious Aiden O'Brien yesterday implied there was little point in appealing but many of us felt that they would have to do so (and we hoped they would) as it was such a harsh penalty with very unpleasant implications. It will now be referred to Shaftesbury Avenue in London, HQ of racing in the UK. On a personal note, the more I see the race the more harsh it seems and while it's tempting to say more, I should perhaps leave it there.

Thankfully, in spite of this, the eulogies have continued in tribute to George's superb performance, with writers exhausting the supply of superlatives to describe his outstanding victory, which made some very classy milers look ordinary.

As you might expect and subject to his continued wellbeing, George is bound for Kentucky and the Breeders' Cup Mile where we hope he will be able to unleash his brilliance.

If anyone can find the URL to the Barbaro story in the Orlando Sentinal, please post in the comments. I have seen the same story via mercury news, but would rather link to the home paper of the writer. Its a cool story!

Update 707: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (saturday night). I went to Fair Hill and to Michael Matz's barn to get the update. He had heard from Dr. Richardson. A lovely poem from Bobby J.: Message of Encouragement From Bobby.

Morning "whatever he wants" (another bowl of grass? organic carrots with greens?) to champion fearless leader Barbaro Jackson, HOF.

FOBs, early birds and anybody who wasn't here yesterday:

I'm reposting Shelley A's suggestion for another avenue through which to create public awareness
below. The essence is to invite other NBC affiliates to use the existing KCRA NBC-10 (the local Folsom, CA NBC affiliate) footage on Jeremiah (ex-Salvation)and his rescued friends to bring attention to the situation in Kaufman, by contacting your local NBC affiliate, since most affiliates pick up stories from each other until they rise to the national surface.

Mary S, employing amazing determination and persistance with her Dallas affiliate,is waiting to hear whether they're assigning the story out.
The letter she used is also posted below.

    ####
Mary S: The answer to your question is yes.

Rosemarie: No worries. Great oaks from little acorns... They'll be on it fast enough if it becomes a national story.

    Susan TX:
If you're here, check out Mary's letter (posted below) for Austin. Good luck!

    Cheers, Friar Tuck

    REPOST ******

An idea came up this morning that I think might be a way to get some publicity for this issue.
KCRA NBC 10 in California has filmed a segment on Jeremiah (aka Salvation). The story tells of his rescue. Most local affiliates pick up stories from each other and it's very simple for them to do.
If you would all contact your local NBC affiliate and give them this information, it is very possible they will run it. Weekends are usually a good time because there is not as much news. It is really a human interest story but it will make the public aware of the slaughter situation.
The story is ALREADY done so your local NBC affiliate may be very happy to have this information.
When contacting them, you can suggest they contact the Mayor of Kaufman TX if they wish.
And also ask them to mention that S1915 is now in the senate.
You may also want to include this story
    http://folsomtelegraph.com/articles/2006/09/20/news/top_stories/01grace.txt
I think this idea would be especially helpful to our Texas and Arizona people. And all of those on the West Coast.
This is a NON-INVASIVE way to get some publicity and it can be done quickly. There are many professionals working on the national publicity and we must not interfere with their plans.
We must work on the local level and we must work quickly.
Even if just a few of the stations pick it up, it would be a very worthwhile effort

ALEX: Below is a link to a story highlighting Thoroughbred Rescue organization, "Old Friends", efforts concerning Taylor's Special, who won the 1984 Bluegrass Stakes. It's worth reading. Slaughter isn't the only issue we need to be concerned with. Thoroughbred rescue is very important also. If Old Friends had not rescued "Taylor", he might have been sent to slaughter.

Thankful for another ACN for Bobby. I love you!!

links aren't hot. Will they be if you repost whatever Alex helped you with?

Everybody: Credit where credit is due alert: This compelling letter was originally written by Marilyn/CA.

    Cheers,
    Friar Tuck

I just spoke with the NBC news desk again to follow-up my call of an hour or so ago. She said she couldn't do anything until Monday because they would have to verify, blah blah..... So-o-o-o I added more links for verification to Marilyn's letter and resent - This makes sense of course - they can't run a story without verifying - so I was just trying to make it easier to find the "sources". Heads up to those that haven't sent yet - might make it easier to verify what we are telling them. Here is what I sent if you would like to use:

    TIME-SENSITIVE HORSE SLAUGHTER STORY

Please consider picking up a KCRA NBC story on the rescue of a foal that was going to slaughter. The news tie-in is S. 1915, the bill before the Senate to ban horse slaughter, currently being stalled by the Senate Commerce Committee. Urgent public action in the form of calls and letters to U.S. Senators is needed in order to keep the Senate from hiding this bill in an election year. Dallas Morning News today has done a story on our own John Cornyn's corrupt handling of HR 503 - a "clerical" error has delayed a bill that was passed by an overwhelming majority in the House, to get to the Senate in a timely manner, and now may result in a "hold" on its passage!! Thousands more horses will die.

Horse slaughter is big business in Texas and Illinois. Ninety-two percent of the slaughtered horses are young and healthy. The horsemeat is sent overseas for human consumption. Many of the slaughtered horses have been stolen and sold to the slaughterhouses, or purchased by slaughterhouse agents under false pretenses. Representative Charlie Howard's own Tennesse Walkers were stolen and met this horrible death (see People magazine's latest issue)

Others are "retired" Premarin mares, thrown away after successive pregnancies. (The HRT drug Premarin is made from pregnant mare's urine. Most women who take it probably don't know this, or that the mares are brutally slaughtered once their useful life is over.) The successive foals are also slaughtered. The rescued foal in the KCRA story is probably a Premarin foal that was going to be thrown away.

    http://folsomtelegraph.com/articles/2006/09/20/news/top_stories/01grace.txt

Americans do not approve of horse slaughter (remember that public outcry stopped the use of horsemeat in dogfood years ago), but many do not know about this slaughter continues at the rate of near 100,000 horses per year.

    Horses Headed Toward Final Hurdle

There are 400 horses in a pen in Kaufman, Texas at this very moment, waiting for Monday morning slaughter. Talk to the mayor of Kaufman. She would love to get this travesty out of her town.
People magazine has a story on horse slaughter in its latest issue, so the public is on the cusp of awareness of this issue.
The American public does not want slaughter of our horses - many do not even know this is occurring in the state of Texas. We have two slaughterhouses - Dallas Crown in Kaufman, Texas and Beltex in Fort Worth.

This is an extremely time-sensitive issue because of the posture of S. 1915 in the Senate. The companion house bill (HR 503) is already passed; if the Senate bill is allowed to languish until the election, the process will have to begin all over again in the House next year. Thousands more horses will die.

It is essential to get the bill jumpstarted out of the Commerce Committee and onto the Senate floor for a vote. This is exactly what the pro-slaughter Senators don't want -- a light shining on this issue before the election. You can be that light.

    Thanks!

Re: the 2:16 pm post from 9/23

    http://www.senate.gov/reference/reference_index_subjects/Schedule_vrd.htm

    Schedule

Congressional schedules indicate what the House and Senate intend to discuss or bring to the floor on a particular day. Schedules differ from calendars, which consist of lists of measures that are eligible for floor consideration. Calendars do not indicate when or if a measure will be considered.

Apparently it is still possible that S1915 / HR503
could be addressed at the Wednesday Sept. 27
full Commerce committee markup meeting. There is no information to the contrary at this time.

Sweet Barbarp, no matter what the day has in store, it is always just a little brighter knowing that you had ACN and will enjoy the day ahead. Enjoy your goodies knowing you are surrounded by love.

Tomorrow really will be a Black Monday. The sun out of shame will not shine on Kaufman,Texas.

    ####

Thanks Friar Tuck. I have to remember to "stay the course". If one person gets through to one affiliate, think of the number of people who will benefit from the information, not to mention the horses.

Prayers for Mike Rea, Erin, and all who need our collective spirit that shines from Barbaro himself.

To Alex and all Fans of Barbaro, enjoy a safe, first Sunday of autumn.

    ALEX -
Thank you for your patience, we promise to come back once we have won this race.

    BARBARO -
Continue to fight the most important race, like all your races you will be the champion.

Read an article that hit kind of hard -
What would we do if we didn't have Barbaro?
Didn't even want to think about it, we would be devasted. We have been wraped up in this Senate race and saying a brief good morning, but you have not been far from our hearts. Many of us would not be as passionate as we are had we not come together because of you.

    Mr. and Mrs. Jackson -
Thank you for being the responsible owners that everyone should be and sharing Barbaro in our lifes.

Good morning, Starshine! So you had ACN!!! Now my day can really start.

Today will be ACD,and then you'll have completed ACW! Slow and steady goes the pace on your marathon here. Every day and every week you are closer to your goal of being well and going home. Meanwhile, enjoy yourself today (but not immoderately, you know not to clown). Please keep the bucking to a minimum for now--a little is good to show your high spirits and state of well being, but you still have to be careful of your legs and your balance!

    Quarter horse slaughter

What is the story with the slaughter of quarter horses? Can anyone explain where all of these surplus quarter horses are coming from, and why??? This is the one piece of the puzzle I feel like I don't really understand.

"Finding humanity among local folks with horse sense

    Sept. 24, 2006 12:00 AM

Back in May, we all felt pretty good about ourselves for the way we encouraged the owners of Barbaro to do everything in their power to save the thoroughbred's life.

But, really, what choice did they have?

Millions of people were watching on TV when Barbaro, the winner of the Kentucky Derby, broke his leg during the Preakness. advertisement

By the time the horse arrived at an animal hospital in Pennsylvania, there were homemade signs attached to the facility's fence reading "We Love You, Barbaro," "Believe in Miracles," "Beat the Odds" and so on. Schoolchildren filled the stall next to Barbaro with get-well cards and flowers.

Nothing like that happened last October, when a thoroughbred gelding named Polish Times broke his leg at Santa Anita racetrack in California.

"It doesn't go well for a lot of these beautiful animals, once they get hurt," said Holly Marino of Horse Rescue of North Scottsdale. "A lot of them wind up at the slaughter auction."

Polish Times' trainer didn't want that to happen to a horse that had won nearly $500,000 over a long career. So, he loaded his 8-year-old horse into a trailer and drove him across the desert to Arizona.

"We win most of the battles to save these horses," Marino said. "We give them the time they need to heal. Then we try to find homes for them. This horse was so patient. He had a huge metal brace on his leg and the doctor came out every two weeks to ultrasound him and then have a farrier change the angle of his shoes to make sure he healed correctly."

It's an expensive proposition, but one that Marino has done for thousands of horses over the years.

"We're so selfish as humans," she said. "It's all about 'me.' Working with horses has taught my family so much about giving and not taking. It has been one of the greatest things for us. A blessing."

After months on the mend at Marino's place, Polish Times was able to move around more freely and has been sent to recuperate further at Rancho Tierra Madre in Cave Creek.

Owner Jim Gath told me, "There are 40,000 thoroughbreds born every year and only one of them eventually wins the Kentucky Derby. Only 3,000 or 4,000 make money. What happens to the rest? You never hear about them. When one gets hurt on national TV everybody cares. But for the rest of them, some of them anyway, there are people like Holly."

Marino has worked with all breeds of horses, as well as donkeys, mules and more. Most of the money comes out of her family's pocket, but she also has received grants and her non-profit organization accepts donations at (602) 689-8825 or www.rescueahorse.com.

"All the reward that I need is to see a horse that came to us broken down being able to run again," she said. "This horse (Polish Times) is like that."

Not long ago, Polish Times was adopted by a woman who owns a large ranch near Yellowstone National Park. He'll move there next summer. Without a jockey on his back or the rails of a track to restrain him, he'll be able to gallop at a speed of his choosing and not always have to turn left.

"When you put Polish Times next to another horse there are no pretensions," Gath said. "There's just acceptance. They live in the moment. They're honest. They're smart. They don't judge."

Maybe that's why human beings who share those characteristics, like Gath and Marino, are said to have horse sense."

    The Marilyn letter

This is the version of the letter to to tv news that I eventually settled on. I like it better than my original version because it includes some research links at the bottom.

I sent it to my NBC affiliate, but I also sent it to ABC and CBS with a little note at the top saying: I just sent the letter below to NBC. I'd be happy if you or they or anyone ran this time-sensitive story about American horse slaughter. Obviously, you can't use the NBC footage, but for your own footact and local contact, you can cal equine rescuer _______________________ at __________________________.

So, anyway, any of you here on the site can use this letter if you want.

Maybe it would be good to post it on the message board site, too, so that people can keep finding it easily. I can't post there...long story, but my email address doens't work to sign on to the board. So maybe someone can cut and paste it over to there. I'd suggest the heading Marilyn's Letter to NBC Affiliate, since people who have seen it here will recognize it under that name.

Anyway, here's the version of the letter with research links.

    TIME-SENSITIVE HORSE SLAUGHTER ISSUE

Please consider picking up a KCRA NBC story on the rescue of a foal that was going to slaughter. The news tie-in is S. 1915, currently being stalled by the Senate Commerce Committee. Urgent public action in the form of calls and letters to U.S. Senators -- particularly to those in Texas and Illinois, and to Senator Bill Frist -- is needed in order to keep the Senate from hiding this bill in an election year.

Horse slaughter is big business in Texas and Illinois. Ninety thousand horses are slaughtered each year. Ninety-two percent of the slaughtered horses are young and healthy. The horsemeat is sent overseas for human consumption.

Many of the slaughtered horses have been stolen and sold to the slaughterhouses, or purchased by slaughterhouse agents under false pretenses.

Others are "retired" Premarin mares, thrown awaay after successive pregnancies. (The HRT drug Premarin is made from pregnant mare's urine. Most women who take it probably don't know this, or that the mares are brutally slaughtered once thier useful lives are over.) The successive foals are also slaughtered. The rescued foal in the KCRA story is probably a Premarin foal that was going to be thrown away.

Americans do not approve of horse slaughter (remember that public outcry stopped the use of horsemeat in dogfood years ago), but they do not know about this issue. That's why the slaughter continues.

There are 400 horses in a pen in Kaufman, Texas at this very moment, waiting for Monday morning slaughter. Talk to the mayor of Kaufman. She would love to get this travesty out of her town.

People magazine apparently has a story on horse slaughter in its new issue, so the public is on the cusp of awareness of this.

This issue is extremely time-sensitive because of the posture of S. 1915 in the Senate. The companion House bill has already passed; if the Senate bill is allowed to languish until after the election, the process will have to begin all over again in the House.

It is essential to get the bill jumpstarted out of Commerce and onto the Senate floor for a vote this week. This is exactly what the pro-slaughter Senators don't want -- a light shined on this issue before the election. You can be that light.

See this link for info on the background of the rescued foal.

    Good Morning Everyone

Is Everyone Else's Heart just filled with happiness and hope where in the article Dr R states that Barbaro was feeling so good that he "Bucked" when he was out grazing and saw the other horses.

That makes me as excited as when we heard that he had began to graze outside.

He truly is on the way to recovery BUT we have to be dilligent in our prayers and support - he does have a long way to go.

I just could not love this horse anymore than if he was mine - thank you so much to the Jacksons, Michael, Peter, Dr R, Dr Kathy and all who are kind enough to share him with us all AND ESPECIALLY to Alex for all his work.

I just got back from MASS, and HAD to check on you!!
I lit more votive candles for you and dear Fog in the Holy Family niche this morning. I had to smile as I approached because two different people before me had left individual bouquets of beautiful red roses at Our Lady's feet. Of course, I had to think of you precious B! Perhaps another Barbaromaniac . . .or someone has another friend in need.

Also continuing the novenas to Our Lady, St. Jude & St. Francis for you.
I hope you have a wonderful day with some special visitors and treats! You be good! You have such class!!
(Remember to whisper to Dr. R that you need to talk to Alex and that Alex needs a VIP Pass!)

I'm going to go get a nap in myself, Bobby, and will be back to check on you later!

Daisy update. This morning, after nearly chewing my arm off when I gave her her pills, she went outside, and walked quite nicely. To our surprise, she wanted hard dry food at her favorite place, on top of a table--we call it her Command Control. She crunched away, had some water, sashayed around some more, then hit the boards to sleep. Flat on her side, passed out.

Two days ago she was near death and literally could not move.

Thanks to all of you who have been there for her! The best thing about the Fans of Barbaro is, there's not such thing as complacency here! And that's so important, because we can never let up on praying for Bobby for a minute.

    Quarter horse slaughter

What is the story with the slaughter of quarter horses? Can anyone explain where all of these surplus quarter horses are coming from, and why??? This is the one piece of the puzzle I feel like I don't really understand.

    Posted by: Marilyn/CA at September 24, 2006 02:02 PM

For one reason Quarter Horses can be artificially inseminated, unlike Thoroughbreds, and this causes overbreeding, what I call irresponsible breeding, and that puts many, many horses on the market, many of whom end up unwanted and sent to slaughter. It's all about money and irresponsibility in my book. Not enough are gelded either which causes inferior horses getting bred to other inferior horses. Ending slaughterhouses would make them have to think twice about all their negligent breeding practices.

    ####### "ONLY" 3 SlaughterHouses?????

I posted this concern I think day before yesterday here on Comments. Still no answer.

Are there more SH's commercially operating that will not be affected by HR 503 and S 1915?

Somebody on TWF also had this concern, after reading the news accounts of the recent Grace Foundation rescue. I know I am not the only one to have noticed this.

Sandie K in Tx seemed dismayed that I used the word "only" in my earlier query-post on this topic. I am well aware of the horribles. You are preaching to the proverbial choir.

I used the word "only" 3 SH's in the US (2 in Tx and 1 in IL), in connection with this question, which still, for me, remains both unanswered and vexing:

I thought there were only 3 such hell-holes. If so - Then why did the Grace Foundation people (per news accounts) rescue Salvation/Jeremiah and the rest of that shipment of horses, from a SH in Nevada????? That is what I want to know. Are there other commercial SH's operating in the US as per the horrible scenario, but not producing for human consumption? What I was/am driving at, is - if/when we succeed in getting rid of the 3 existing ones via federal legislation, do we still have to worry about horses being commercially slaughtered for other purposes???? Does anybody know, please? Or can you find out? THANK YOU. ["...please don't let me be misunderstood..."]

A quick follow up...I think that the three slaughterhouses that we have in our scope right now is all we have to worry about. But, it is a good question, and one that perhaps on which we need to find more information. Right now there are three operating which you know. Will do some checking.

I realize that there are concerns that if we point out inhumane slaughter of horses, some feel that it will just lead to more humane method; however, we need to use that argument to oppose those who say these horses are being euthanized which implies they are being put to sleep which cannot be used for food animals because of the chemicals.

We also need to point out that these bolt guns used on cattle are not made for horses because many cattle ranchers are opposing this bill because they fear that we will be asking to ban beef slaughter next.

It would take some time for the horse slaughterers to come up with a bolt gun designed for horses, if we get this bill passed now, the law will stand because with a majority of Americans against it, Congress will not re-visit the issue especially if we are vigilant.

There are 3 Horse slaughter plants that process horses for HUMAN CONSUMPTION to foreign markets.

there are smaller slaughter houses (as in Nev) that take horses and slaughter for non human consumption, eg zoos, wildlife refuges, another way for ranchers, etc to "put down" old sick horses.. course we know that not all are...

The focus has been on the 3 large ones not owned by americans, but foreign investors and sole purpuse is selling the meat to foreign markets for human consumption.

FUnny this was brought up as my daughter has been looking into the smaller places in the US that are slaughtering horses. Their numbers are lower than the Big 3 ones. She is working on a list of them for me.

I agree with you 100%....that we should do what has been so expertly laid out. I have been doing this for 5 long, heartbreaking, gut-wrenching years. As I said before, I will continue to my last breath if it hasn't been resolved by then.

From my experience in legal research and in the legal profession, I can tell you that the LawMAKERS in Washington, our elected officials, do NOT have time to read voluminous letters, read brochures, look at pictures and watch video's. It's impossible. They want to know the bottom line....what you think about an issue and where you stand as a voter. Period.

We need numbers. The only way to get numbers is to email friends, groups, anyone we can, and ask them to cross-post our emails. We can hand out brochures, leave brochures everywhere we go, talk to as many people as possible. Five years ago the voice for horses was tiny, compared to what it is now. We are finally getting our voices heard through numbers.

I was there when millions of women were taking Premarin and had no idea where it came from, nor did they know the horrendous side effects. I was there when hundreds of thousands of foals were being slaughtered every year because of the need for hormones that pregnant mares provided. I was there, with my one PMU foal, showing him off to anyone and everyone who would look in his direction. As he grew and became the handsome and wonderful creature that he is, he became a voice for all of his kind who had no voice. He and I were saving lives, one at a time. One is not many but, it's better than none and one plus one equals two, and so on. Now we have hundreds under our belt and the numbers grow every year. NUMBERS....it takes time and work but, numbers add up. Thank God, we have seen the demand for Premarin drop by 50% and the number of foals slaughtered every year has dropped by at least that much. However, there are still foals dying needlessly. And they will continue to die as long as this dangerous drug is prescribed.

I appreciate, more than words can say, the efforts and passion that I am now seeing in this horrendous situation. I appreciate the efforts that you are putting into this, as I know what it takes. It not only takes time, it takes it's toll, as well, on the human spirit. We can't give up. I refuse to give up.

    ______________________________--

Weldon has been working on the horse slaughter issue for five long years, and with very little help. I encourage you to take the time to go over to discussion and read Weldon's posts on the Kaufman Mayor thread. He has first hand experience of what it is to fight an impossible battle, against impossible odds, and yet that's we have committed to do. Never think that our victory will be won easily. It won't. And Weldon's first hand knowledge is from someone who has been in the field much longer than we, and his experience is invaluable to us. Please try to take a minute to read his posts.

and also some of the horses bought in auctions in Nevada, Oregon, etc that they are saving would have been trucked to either Texas or Illinois. There is a horse auction this weekend in Indiana where there are going to be 8 killer buyers there. haven't not heard the outcome of that one, believe the sale was yesterday?

Many of the horses sent to the 3 plants do not come from the area at all. 75% are shipped from ALL over the US to these plants. Many are shipped at night to avoid being seen by State Patrol as they are always overloaded and illegal.

Dallas Slaughter only advertises on their site that they ship meat for "zoos", not one thing is mentioned at all about Shipping across sea for human consumption.

Posted by: Mary L Ohio at September 24, 2006 5:01 PM

    Important Point,

Most zoos don't use horsemeat anymore to feed their animals because of concerns about disease. They use beef instead. Horsemeat for dog food hasn't been used for the past 12 years.

Alex, thank you for all the articles. They're all terrific. Love to read what Mrs. Jackson has to say and Dr. R, once again, puts everything into perspective in regards to how far Barbaro has to go. We need to continue sending healing thoughts to our boy and his left hoof.

Great quotes from someone named Alex Brown.. does any know this fella?

Love you Barbaro.... don't buck too much! Great to read that.. simply great.

Congratulations Alex and Tim and the big article in todays' Orlando Sentinel! Wish I had a scanner...the headline has Barbaro/Edgar bursting through the B and the G in the word "BIG" which is 4 1/4" tall. Awesome! I snail mail it so you can put it in your scrapbbok. Thank you for all you do to keep everyone updated on Barbaro's condition.

    Good Morning BarbaroWorld Family

Thanks for the updates Alex. That article was great Your comments about Barbaro, the athlete, working, training, being a good boy, then breaking his leg in front of millions of people, was so heart-felt. A writer here in Denver wrote an article in July about why Barbaro is a hero, and he cited basically the same reasons. He doesn't do drugs, doesn't complain about his contract, his pay, his accomodations, the press, his handlers, the fans..he just loves life and does what he does, and does it impeccably. And then when it's least expected, tragedy strikes and everyone rallies to pray for him and send healing thoughts to him and everyone connected to him. And THAT is what being a hero is all about.

Good for George. No one can take away his fabulous performance. The terms "sour grapes" and "sore losers" came to mind. George will show everyone that there are no excuses.

Thanks to God for ACN for Barbaro. Another bright and beautiful day dawned, another day closer to discharge from NBC. That awesome staff will surely miss him, but won't that be the most fabulous day!

Healing thoughts and prayers to everyone who needs them, Mike Rea who inspires me, Annie and her little girl Erin, Daisy, Zeke, I'ma, little Salvation, Mr. Aleo and Mr. Gilchrist, the memory of Fog and the Kaufman 400 and all those in other "houses" in TX and IL who are the forgotten ones.

    Later, Family

    Love to all

    ###

She thanked everyone for their thoughts and contributions. PLEASE let her know that we are thinking of her constantly and pray for Erin and for her entire family.

I sent Marilyn's letter to the NBC affiliate in Dallas yesterday, along with additional links. I phoned them first and talked to someone for a long time about the SH issue and asked him who to direct my e-mail to. I also referenced Todd Gillman's article since it ran in our local paper (Dallas Morning News). I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they will run it.

Sooo.....Dallas NBC affiliate has the info and so does Houston. Thanks to Mary S.

    Speaking of overview....(thanks Friar Tuck)

The next 48 to 72 hours are best devoted to overview and not details. It is crucial that our voices be heard; the best method is to be clear, simple and to the point with everyone on the same page.

Starting Monday morning, please call your senators. Keep it simple and on point and friendly.

If you follow up with e-mail, keep it short, avoid attachments or anything else that may cause it to be kicked back.

    Faxes should one page.

Suggested language for e-mail and fax courtesy of Melissa Harden (thank you Melissa) would be:

I am asking you to co-sponsor S.1915 "A bill to amend the Horse Protection Act to prohibit the shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or donation of horses and other equines to be slaughtered for human consumption and for other purposes" and urge that it be put on the calendar for markup.
In addition, I am also asking that you support and urge for a vote on companion bill HR503 (Unamended), that contains the same language, should HR503 come up for a vote prior to S.1915.

Hi Barbaro Friends -- Great ideas here. I just emailed the CA NBC news story idea to my NBC Affiliate News Desk in Albany, NY.

I will be offline for a bit following surgery in Boston tomorrow. As we drive over there tomorrow am, know that we intend to work with the highest of sources for the swift passage of this legislation. We also intend to offer support on all levels for the dear ones who may find their way to these places in the meantime.

Imagine a million horse march in DC, with small children, ponies, police horses, all showing the American people the quiet beauty of these fine animals. A picture is worth a thousand words, and an open heart with a warrior's soul is worth more than we can possibly imagine. Good luck, my friends, and keep the passion going! Take care of yourselves and focus on the positive - as much as possible -- so you have the energy you need. Best, Susan in Saratoga

Responsible horse owners portrayed in Equus Magazine.

Wanted to call to your attention, the October issue (just got in mail the other day) of Equus magazine, which includes two separate articles that reflect how responsible horse owners deal with horses who become "unusable" through no fault of their own.

There is one from a woman whose old Tennessee Walker (whom she was using as a mounted patrol horse) has cataracts and is losing his sight; she intends to keep him, and is asking Equus' vet column what changes to expect as time goes on.

Another is a case study of a young trail horse who got caught in barbed wire just a day after being acquired by a new owner - who is determined to keep him comfortable and happy even if totally unridable. (caveat - barbed wire is a bitch!)

Very enheartening; I recommend checking out this issue of Equus if only for that reason.

More Living Proof of the Living Truth.

Finally an answer to my question, whether there are SH's other than the 3 we know about; previous reports re the Grace Foundation Rescue indicated they were rescued from a SH in Nevada.

Now it is clarified, they were in a FEEDLOT in Nevada, but bound for slaughter in Illinois.

The opening paragraphs of the article in the Folsom Telegraph about saving the 19 horses including the little colt Salvation/Jeremiah:

"A frantic call from a worker at a feedlot in Fallon, Nevada has resulted in saved lives.

The worker told Beth DeCaprio, executive director of The Grace Foundation of Northern California, that a large group of healthy horses was destined for a slaughterhouse in Illinois."

That takes care of my nagging questions. Please excuse me if I got anybody else riled up over this. CJ in Hammond IN

I've just re-read Mike's articles (think this is number 3)again. Dr. R said Bobby's left hoof has grown about 18mm in the heel area - and has to go 3 times that at least. So (I'm still operating in inches - sorry) 18mm = .7087 inches. He has to get to 2.126 inches - 54mm at least. That I can visualize!! Bobby can do that by Valentine's Day. Please don't think I'm crazy - I had to get a picture.

Thanks for the lifeline, Alex. Hi, Mr. Roy Jackson. You read these posts! We think you and the missus are heroes, just like Barbaro!

I started my letters. I am finding that on a lot of the senators' web forms, when you are supposed to choose a topic from the dropdown menu, there is no topic for Animal Rights. There IS a topic for Agriculture, but we should NOT choose Agriculture, since we do not consider horses to be livestock. I have just been saying "Other", if there is no Animal Rights topic....

    Posted by: Marilyn/CA at September 24, 2006 9:06 PM

I just read that statute and we may do ourselves more harm than good by getting involved with this.

The reason is, that, they lump horses into the catagory of livestock. One of the BIGGEST arguments on our side is that horses are NOT livestock.

That's why they have legal people handling this side of the issue. We need to tread very carefully.

Barbaro Team:>) Hope your day is going great. I really enjoyed the article in Philly.Com entitled "Standing By Barbaro". Mrs. Jackson is such a beautiful lady and full of heart. I especially liked the part where she says that she received a bottle of holy water from Lourdes that a fan had sent Barbaro. And she actually used it. And I also like the part where she stated that "Barbaro doesn't belong to just them (the Jacksons) anymore. And because Barbaro has so many fans, she stated: "If that many people want to see him, he'd better go someplace where they'll be able to see him".

Well, I'll come back later.......I'm off to take care of my 2 granddaughter's for a little while.

Hi all: Just read all the articles. They were really good. They mentioned everything but one thing that they are not sure of is, will he make it? I chose to believe he will. I should say, I know in my heart he will. He's a fighter and nothing is going to stop him now. He has been at his lowest and has bounced back strong. He's not going back there again. His hoof will grow back, he will be able to distribute weight on both feet equally and that's that. End of story. I'm not living in a fantasy world. He is one tough cookie and he's got an insatiable will to live and millions that love him. That's going to carry him. You gotta believe and have faith. I sure do.

Bobby: You keep fighting sweetie. We all love you and want you to get well and prove what a remarkable horse you are. You'll be home with mommy and daddy Jackson soon enough. Remember, baby steps lead the way home and you will be home soon. I promise. Love ya

The Mayor said they tried closing the plant due to environmental issues, but EPA is different from OSHA.

I worked in a funeral home and we had rules like you wouldn't believe. We were required to have detailed labels from the companies on any chemicals we kept, be properly dressed (booties, mask, gloves, gowns) when we entered a particular room, and so on. Won't go into details but many regulations.

They could find violations in any place you wouldn't even think of, that's why it's beyond my belief that OSHA is not involved.

Sally..It's rare that these horses get catastrphically injured in dressage and even jumping (cross-country is a bit more dangerous). Most of the breeds they use have sturdy legs. Also their training makes them strong!!

    1. WOW Mary S.! Sweet Mary, do worry you said what many of us are feeling. You're not the only one feeling desperate and hopeless, you were the only brave person to say it.

Posted by: Socorro at September 24, 2006 09:25 PM"

...and in a world where big business always obeyed the law and bribery didn't exist, we wouldn't even have these plants in this country, much less have environmental, labor and workplace violations up the wazoo.

Thank you, Alex, for posting all the articles for us to read. Without you (and Tim) many of us probably wouldn't see them!

I read the articles with all of you, and from a few posts I detect that some of you picked up with me that rather negative line "Although his survival remains in doubt, . . . . ." following the main title "Barbaro's Big Breakthrough".
I personally prefer Mike Jensen's "Standing by Barbaro".

I hesitated to post at first but something inside says I need to speak from the heart here
(and absolutely no offense intended) but that one line really bothered me. In truth, Barbaro never leaves my mind or my heart. I read all the articles I can access and always appreciate good information, good journalism.
It's just that when it comes to the bottom line, I only accept the information that Alex himself gets for us direct from New Bolton Center via Mr. Matz, Peter, Dr. Anderson, Mrs. Jackson . . . ., and the official releases by Dr. Richardson via UPENN's official website.
We saw the smile on Dr. Richardson's face last week while out with Edgar and Barbaro.
Perhaps "survival remains in doubt" in the minds of some, but for me I see what happens here among the Barbaromaniacs day after day, night after night, and some days and nights a lot longer than others. We know the critical nature of Barbaro's condition, just as Barbaro knows; Mike Rea's family knew how critically injured Mike was, too, but isn't that how the Barbaromaniacs came together?? WE BELIEVE!
I personally am very proud to wear my t-shirt (Thank you, Ernie!!) BELIEVE IN MIRACLES, BELIEVE IN BARBARO!
I remember an inscription I saw many years ago:
"For those who believe, no explanation is necessary; for those who don't believe, no explanation is possible."

Come to think of it, there were some rather negative lines written about Seabiscuit, too.

I will be vigiling this evening at 7:00 p.m. for Barbaro, please join me if you want.
And a big kiss on your nose to you, Barbaro!
Tell the nurses you need one of those "Nicker Makers" and you just crunch right along with us!
I love you, and my heart does beat for your heart!

Sally in Key West - thanks for reminding me, I had to give Pearl (one of my 10 feline children) a pill. She was in a pile with Franny and Foxy; just gave it to her, didn't even disturb the grouping! (She gets 1/2 a pred every other day to control overgrooming.) Most of my cats let me medicate them; those who don't (or always hide when it's pill-time), I call DNR cats, haha. (Lost one of those this past Summer - RIP Tippi. One of the last of the T Bar J barncats.)

Very interesting twist in the WEG jumping competition; down to the 4 finalist riders, they have to swith and ride each other's horses - that is, to compete on a horse they've never ridden before. CJ in Hammond IN

Posted by: C. Jaffe at September 24, 2006 9:36 PM

Yes, why is a horse termed livestock? We don't eat horses - if it is a cultural thing, then China eats dogs - why aren't dogs on the list. Also, the horse the only "livestock" member on the list used in the military. Cows haven't saved our lives in battle. Why can't some attorney get the horse reclassified?????

When my OTTB was first in retraining I KVELLED MIT NACHAS all over the place, watching his progress. And I always encouraged others to ride mine, so as to make mine more adoptable, should he/she outlast me.

There was this company that had some foreign workers and they thought everyone was a foreign worker.

A woman was handling a huge window by herself, fell down and hurt herself. This woman worked over 25 yrs. in different places, sometimes injuring herself, but never made a complaint. This time she asked to seek medical attention, the supervisor instructed her to go back to work station, the woman left against the supervisor's instructions as she was hurt.

A report was made to OSHA by this woman who was an American Citizen, assumed to have been an illegal. OSHA fined the company and new procedures were implemented. The job the woman was doing now required two men, safety belts, proper OSHA training, and as we know, proper documentation of an injury. Oh, forgot to mention, Worker's Compensation was involved and the Labor Board.

Conditions for the employees improved. Justice prevailed.

The days all seem the same…yet you don’t come back
I wait, and I wait, and wonder..will I ever see you again
I’m growing tired..like the others..please come back for me

This day begins differently, but I don’t know just why
Is it because you will come? You will come and take me away?
There is pain now, the fear never stops..I can barely breathe
It’s different here somehow today, much different PLEASE come back

I sense things..from those who are near me, from those who have gone on before me
Things that I don’t understand. It’s like nothing I’ve known before
I feel pain like never before..hunger like never before..thirst, and such sadness
No matter how I try to plead to your thoughts..will you never come back for me?

Here comes a man. He snaps a lead to my halter.
We are going in. My steps don't come easily.
I smell blood on the man! I'm afraid! I SCREAM...

    Ara

I got ahold of a friend of mine that lives in the Texas area and he has a friend that lives in Kauffman, sorry, he just got back with me tonight and this person knows some of the times they do things there.

They start "murdering" at 5am in Dallas Crown. Sunday there is no one there except security. He said they have hired more security personal because of this bill and people trying to break in to rescue the horses. this place is backed by HUGE dirty money.

THey can process around 100-150 horses in a day. Somtimes more.

This friend of his also has said that the sheer numbers of horses being sent has really increased since the 7th of this month. Just before this they would process around 500 horses in One week, in the last 2 weeks he has seen over 800 and more in a week.

This friend has been trying to count them as they come in but you have to be so careful as there are security personal around and they will take cameras, etc if they see someone using them. Anyone seen "lurking" in the area will be asked to leave or be threatened with arrest for trespassing.

Unfortunately, once the horses are behind the fences and put in the pens, it is near impossible to get any of them out. We will not be able to save these 450 (that is what he and a couple of others counted) horses, not unless the power goes out or a divine intervention. BUT we NEED to keep our focus on this bill and saving those others that will be heading there soon.

The issue on the "loophole" you discussed earlier (this friend of his does read the board) has already been tried in court, other measures taken, but you have to realize that there is HUGE MONEY behind this place. The bolt is considered "humane".. sucks huh..

All we can do is Pray that these horses do not suffer and find a angel horse to met them on the other side to great them and make them happy again.

No one has discussed the other 2 Slaughter houses either, did you know their numbers are up also since the house passed the bill?? Everyoe is shoving horses to slaughter, because they fear the bill will pass. that sickens me.

I so wish with all my heart and soul, I had the money to rescue a horse. My heart is breaking thiinking of this.

I was almost to the point today of stopping this... at times things seem to be so unorganized, going in 20 different directions.. Getting some rather nasty HATE emails. but I can't let those horses down. So i will find that extra energy to do it. Just pisses me off I am not physically able to do more, I just feel I am not doing enough..

PLEASE Stay Focused on this Bill.. FAX, Call, Email.

The Voices that can not speak are depending on us to do their speaking.. Let us not let them down.

    Hello fellow "fans of Barbaro"

Busy weekend here in the sunshine state and I haven't been able to read all the posts. I'm trying to skim over the messages to see what the latest strategy is but I think the consensus is still to call our Senators tomorrow to urge them to co-sponser S1915.

I loved reading all the "Bobby" articles but like other have said, wished that the slaughterhouse issue could have been mentioned.

I hope and pray (like everyone else here) that our efforts will be successful. Sooner or later they will be - if one strategy doesn't work, we must come up with another that will.

Socorro - thank you so much for bringing this law to our attention. Know what? I think maybe there is a civilized U.S. Attorney (federal prosecutor) in Texas and maybe one in Illinois as well - can anybody contact them? Arrest those who are doing it and padlock the plants, no less than if they were manufacturing illegal drugs inside. They are breaking federal law.

Here is the law - what if anything can be done about it? The process as explained to us, definitely violates this. Does the Mayor of Kaufman know about this law? PLEASE somebody put this in the TWF where I too cannot post. THANK YOU. (And thanks to the lawyer-guy I work with for having Westlaw on my computer so I could click this right up for you all to see.)

    United States Code Annotated
    Title 7. Agriculture
Chapter 48. Humane Methods of Livestock Slaughter

    § 1902. Humane methods

No method of slaughtering or handling in connection with slaughtering shall be deemed to comply with the public policy of the United States unless it is humane. Either of the following two methods of slaughtering and handling are hereby found to be humane:

    (a) in the case of cattle, calves, horses, mules, sheep, swine, and other livestock, all animals are rendered insensible to pain by a single blow or gunshot or an electrical, chemical or other means that is rapid and effective, before being shackled, hoisted, thrown, cast, or cut; or

    (b) by slaughtering in accordance with the ritual requirements of the Jewish faith or any other religious faith that prescribes a method of slaughter whereby the animal suffers loss of consciousness by anemia of the brain caused by the simultaneous and instantaneous severance of the carotid arteries with a sharp instrument and handling in connection with such slaughtering.

What you have reported is generally what the mayor has already told us, and TOTALLY CORRECT.
I have stressed over and over again that there are
HUGE POWERS arrayed against us. Thank you for giving us the picture of the armed camp mentality. Obviously, Crown is in lockdown. It is a disgusting and nauseating picture that has been painted for us, but let's keep that ugly picture ever before us as we march off into battle tomorrow...and that is exactly what it is...we are seeing the battle between good and evil...and it is one that we MUST win...decent people everywhere join together to fight with all we have within us. We are doing all we can...so PRAY. What a very sad night this is. As you said, there will be other truck loads pulling up to Crown soon, and maybe, just maybe that we will make a difference for them. God help us. I can't see to type any more.

Well I just read the first article--the one that at the end quotes Mrs. Jackson saying that they know they don't own Barbaro themselves anymore.

Words can't express the graciousness of these people. I know it'll be many months (and could be a few years) before I can see Barbaro, but knowing that the Jackson's will think about sending him somewhere we can all have access to him is wonderful.

I think I knew that Barbaro wouldn't be able to stand as a full stallion. Only because people here have told us what their experience has been with "L" and its aftermath.

But daily I come here and at least read the announcements. And I rejoice that Barbaro is mending.

It's not at all surprising to me that he is a champ. Look at his family. All of his family are true defintions of champions.

PLEASE stay away from this statute....it lists horses as livestock along with cattle. This is the ammunition that can be used against our side.

One of the major points being made is that horses are NOT livestock so we don't need to point out an obsolete law that says they are.
This is that slippery slope that we must be very careful of. That's why they have the lawyers handling this.

I know everyone means well, but it's a dangerous place to go.

I would not call it lockdown but there is a noticable added security there now. There is a lot of emotion behind this. we all know that. and just like any other "business" they are protecting their "assets".

What really got to me, is this friend that lives in Kauffman (not my friend but his friend) says he is positive there are a couple of pregnant mares in the lot. When I read that part, I truelly lost it. too think that a foal will never have a chance to breathe and live.

Anyone that really knows me, knows how passionate I am for animals. I have rescued many dogs in my time and rehab them. So when they hurt, I hurt.. I may not have many "human" friends but i sure do have tons of animal friends. I have such a love and compassion for animals that if I could I would have my own rescue farm for any animals that need to be free and happy again.

    How does everyone else feel?

I agree but if they inforce that law, they are saying that the federal law considers horses to be livestock. That's the problem....our side's biggest point is that they're not.
Believe me, I'd like to march in there and save them too!! And put those owners up on the hooks with a bolt!!!!

Okay, I agree with Shelley, avoid this Statue.. That is NOT what we need to focus on in the next few days..

IT HAS been argued and lost. This is considered a humane device for livestock.. At the moment, Horses are not a different catagory, they are lumped as "livestock" when it comes to slaugher.

    and excerpt I found:

The process of killing horses for food is identical to the one used for cattle. The animals are stunned by a captive bolt gun.

    The Bolt

I've mentioned this somewhere -- yesterday -- but stressing the inhumaneness of the slaughter just gives the Senate a reason to make the slaughter more humane; not to ban it. We want to ban it. Let's not over-publicize facts that may lead to a compromise that we don't want.

The parallel is to the death penalty cases. Proponents keep trying to make the killings more humane; opponents focus on the inhumaneness of ANY killing.

We want to promote the latter view -- the inhumaneness of ANY killing of horses for human consumption.

I understand the temptation to try for a temporary shutdown on grounds of inhumane methods of killing, but I don't think it's going to happen, and it may just give the Senate the idea that they can tinker with the killing process and keep the $$$ people happy.

We are in it for the ban.

Because we are in the ranching business I have had the opportunity to see the bolt gun work on a cow.I was actually amazed at how quick and humane that it was. The cow was gone in an instant. It was not barbaric and ugly like it is with horses.
And that's one reason that we have to keep these issues separated. This is ONE of the reasons that Cattle Raisers Assoc. and cattle people in general have a problem with the subject of horse slaughter, although we are converting some, thank God.
I would also like to say that the reason I was there at all was because we had a cow that jumped the fence and pulled all the tendons in her leg. It was as good as broken. Please, I am not trying to make a sad night even worse, but I am an animal lover, and as such, I was comforted to know how it really happens. It was not ugly at all..it was actually peaceful. Horses are a different matter altogether.

I agree with Shelley that the definition of livestock is beyond our scope at the moment. It is something people can and should mention in hearings before Congress, on a sort of emotional basis, in talking about the iconic status of horses in America. But I think that's all that can be done in the context of this particular statute.

I imagine if anyone wants to know more about this issue, the Humane Society has probably been all over it for years.

For our purposes, though, I believe it is a dead end.

Melissa- when we were contacting congress about HR503 and I called Congresswoman Kay Granger's office in Texas, who represents one of the districts where a slaughterhouse resides, I was told that some of the horsemeat went to the local zoo. Unsure if that is true but that is what I was told. The conversation went downhill from there. The woman I spoke with could have said both slaughterhouses reside there.. I can't remember but she also said it provides 100 jobs for people who live there. The conversation went downhill from there. I had to hang up when I was told humanely the horses were slaughtered.

In fact...just repost..hehe...if everyone else is like me, they will need it...esp tomorrow...and today for planning...

Maybe I should have kept this shorter...LOL

You got what I was saying. They have lawyers to handle the legal points.
You've made very good points. That's why we have to all be on the same page.
Many times, my best intentions got me in trouble.

Everyone here has the very best of intentions but we have to be careful.

I'm working on emails today. Some of the senators have these terrible dropdown lists of topics where the only thing that works is Agricultural, and they don't even have a selection for Other.

I refuse to categorize this as Agricultural, so for those Senators I am selecting the topic...Commerce.

Might as well call it how it is, I figure...

Thanks for the comments. I thought horses that go to stud farms are sold to them. I even read that was the plan for the Fog. Does anyone know if a horse can be sent to another farm but still owned by someone else?

The article made me stop and think how seeing Barbaro might be nice for me but maybe not for the horse. I felt selfish. Remember the article were Mrs. Jackson said she thought after the Derby they had lost their horse? If we are attached to him, imagine how they feel nursing him back to heath every single day. We have been reading about these hroses sent away after they are done racing and it breaks my heart. He would be away from Dr. R, Peter, Michael, the Jacksons and all the people who love him.

Myself, I would love to see him back at Fair Hill. This is probably unrealistic for them to take him, but he loved it there and they would take excellent care of him.

Funny...too emotional an approach for my style, though, I guess; I prefer to stress the moneyed aspects.

I also don't want to put Animal Rights. Makes us sound like PETA.

Animal Welfare is good. Few have it, though.

Mary, from what I understand FairHill is for horses in training. I think it would probably be hard for Barbaro to be there since he would be getting the urge to run. A nice slow pace on a Kentucky horse farm would be great, or just wherever the Jacksons decide they want him to be. As long as he is healthy that is what matters.

Ah gawd they're up to 450 and counting, 800 a week since the 7th. How do they sleep at night?

THE ONLY THING that keeps from breaking down right now is knowing that they're running scared. The grunts would not be cranking up the numbers like this if their well-connected higher-ups didn't genuinely fear we are going to win this.

WE ARE GOING TO WIN THIS.

IN MAY WHEN BARBARO WAS FIRST INJURED, MICHAEL MATZ SAID IN AN INTERVIEW THAT BARBARO WOULD PROBABLY GO TO KENTUCKY IF HE HEALED PROPERLY, HOWEVER, WITH ALL THE CELEBRITY STATUS BOBBY HAS ACHIEVED, I WOULD THINK THEY MAY KEEP HIM CLOSE TO HOME. I KNOW WHEN I GO THROUGH AN ILLNESS WITH ONE OF MY PETS, IT MAKES ME LOVE THEM SO MUCH MORE. MRS J. MADE THAT POINT IN AN ARTICLE LAST WEEK ALSO, ABOUT HOW MUCH SHE LOVED BEAUTIFUL BARBARO.

Neat articles, Alex, and thanks for posting. A wee cautionary note, however, in case there are real novice horse people out there (and maybe even all well-meaning animal keepers who do NOT have legions of exemplary support/medical staff, which would likely include about 99% of us..) 'a bucketful of fresh grass'...ooh, under a certain set of circumstances, could actually help bring on a blooming laminitis, especially (in this part of the world, and according to old New England husbandry practices) in the spring of the year and up to mid-July -and this would go equally for sheep, cows and goats, as well as horses. I mention this, as I've already suggested, not because it could ever have been a factor in this Case, but on the chance that readers might consider it a good practice in other instances. Live green food is of course excellent, but only in small doses, frequently. Probably everybody knows this, but if it can save one pony a hoof, or one Alpine doe a bad bloat, I'll claim it was worth saying.. Best wishes, †KAWilson

Letters to NBC and other affiliates

If anyone needs to contact your affiliate, Soccoro has posted my letter to NBC on the forum so it will be easy to find. You are welcome to use it.

Topic: Anti-Slaughter; Title: Marilyn's Letter to NBC.

    Thank you so much, Soccoro!!!

Soccoro had to retype it because it wouldn't paste in. I couldn't even get onto the forum to post because of a technical problem from my end. So it was great of her to do this.

I am now convinced that it doesn't matter where you are, all governments are corrupt, if you put money into the election fund, you don't exist.

Now is not the time, but during recess we need to look at their contributors and give this information to their opponnents, not that they will be any better.

I am so disgusted, feel like throwing up, wish I could throw up in their faces.

    One more thought...

They all have to be so tired of answering anxious reportrs questions about B's chances and if he is going to make it. We all know this is day-to-day. Mrs. Jackson and Dr. R have been telling us this, so nothing about what they said surprised me except when I read about him feeling so good he is starting to get full of himself..bucking, shaking his head. Made my night! Way to go Barbaro!

    ALEX -

Just read the article where Mrs. Jackson was talking about Barbaro, "STANDING BY BARBARO." That was the medicine I needed.

Mrs. Jackson sounds like a down to earth person, so loving. Barbaro couldn't have a better mom.

Would love for her to run for President.

I am writing to ask you to co-sponsor S. 1915, "A bill to amend the Horse Protection Act to prohibit the shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or donation of horses and other equines to be slaughtered for human consumption and for other purposes", and to urge that it be put on the calendar for markup.

In addition, I am also asking that you support and urge for a vote companion bill H.R. 503 (unamended), which contains the same language, should H.R. 503 come up for a vote prior to S. 1915.

Pamela, I agree, regarding Bobby. I think what they mean is, if he can't go to stud, that he should be at some venue like Kentucky Horse Park where he could thrill thousands.

But we're a long way from there. I think, if he can grow the hoof, he will go to stud. THey may always have to watch carefully, and he may not be able to cover as many mares as another stallion, but I think if all goes well, he will sire some fine offspring. And we don't know. He could even be prolific.

But if he can't, and he needs a good place to be, I think they want to share him with the world. Like John Henry and Cigar have been shared with the world. (As long as the world comes to the Kentucky Horse Park.)

    ######### Feeding Clipped Grass

Kathleen A. Wilson, 9/25, 12:34 am, cautions novices re feeding grass clippings. A warning well worth heeding - but for some reasons in addition to what she stated.

Serendipitously, the new (October) issue of Equus Magazine (that I rec'd by mail a day or so ago; available at feed stores and some magazine stores) has an informative article on that very topic. In a regular column, EQ Consultants, the first item, pp. 82-84, entitled "DIET - The way to feed cut grass" - addresses the topic, pointing out that when a horse is fed cut grass, the horse has not had to WORK FOR the food, as by grazing. This can cause digestive problems for reasons the writer cites. The consultant who answered is Anthony Blikslager, DVM, PhD, North Carolina State University, Raleigh NC.

(The next item in this same column, pp. 84-85, is one of those I mentioned earlier as illustrating responsible horse ownership, "VISION - Helping a horse adapt to blindness.")

Obviously when Barbaro could not go out to graze, his only source of fresh grass, was clipped - and he had just the right family to come through on that score.

When my Joe (QH) was declining with congestive heart failure in his last few weeks on earth, he would get dizzy if he put his head down, so he had quit trying to graze. I would walk him into a ditch so he could eat the grass at ground level, that was even with where his face was when he was standing in the ditch.

This information stood me in good stead years later in dealing with both a cat and a dog with this condition. Anyone with a critter suffering from this - RAISE UP THE FEEDING AREA. You'd be amazed what a diffrence it can make. The dog to this day eats from dishes on his very own "table" which is nothing more than a big box upside down.

LIVING PROOF OF THE LIVING TRUTH.

Hope Peace Love & Music - CJ the craziest catlady (Blackie's Mother & Pleasure's Aunt) in Hammond IN, f/k/a CJ of T Bar J (Elgin IL)

WE DONT WANT A MARK UP ON S1915!

THIS IS WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF THEY ARE ALLOWED TO MARK UP S1915.
THE SENATE CANNOT VOTE ON A HOUSE BILL..HR503 ALREADY PASSED THE HOUSE..
WE WANT S1915 OUT OF COMMITTE AND ONTO THE SENATE FLOOR WITH NO AMENDMENTS AND NO MARKUPS.
IF THEY ARE ALLOWED TO MARK UP THIS BILL, THEY CAN MAKE THEIR OWN VERISON OF IT. IF THIS HAPPENS, THE 2 BILLS HR 503 AND S1915 WILL NOT MATCH!
THEN THE HOUSE AND THE SENATE WILL HAVE TO HAVE A SPECIAL CONFERENCE MEETING TO DECIDE WHICH VERISON OF THE BILL 'THEY" WANT TO VOTE ON!
AND COME TO A COMPROMISE! WE DO NOT WANT THIS.. WE NEED BOTH BILLS TO MATCH EACH OTHER.
IF THEY CAN MARK UP THIS BILL S1915, THEY WONT MATCH AND WILL HAVE TO GO BACK TO THE HOUSE AND SENATE AGAIN!!
WE WANT BOTH BILLS TO MATCH HR 503 AND S1915.. NO AMENDMENTS NO MARKUPS.
WE WANT S1915 OUT OF COMMITTE AND TO THE SENATE FOR A FULL VOTE WITH NO AMENDMENTS AND NO MARKUPS.
ONLY THEN, WHEN THE BILL PASSES, CAN THE PRESIDENT SIGN IT INTO LAW.

Mike Johanns has been one of the main problems in this horse slaughter issue. He came up with the idea for USDA to accept money from the deep bloody pockets of the killers and circumvented the will and INTENT of Congress when they voted to stop using Tax dollars to pay the inspectors from USDA. Congress intended for that bill to stop the slaughter. Thanks to Johanns, the killing continues. When you read his quote about the horses being seriously impacted by banning horse slaughter, you can see how his twisted mind works. He's no different than the killers.

In honor of our 452 - story about a thoroughbred I followed when he was in Florida - from
    Thoroughbred Times -
STAKES WINNER SAVED FROM SLAUGHTER, RETURNED TO BIRTHPLACE.
After Nobably Frosty passd through the hands of more than a half-dozen owners since 2003, the striking gray gelding finally earned a trip home when he caught the eye of Kelly Young at the NEW HOLLAND SALES on April 3.

Young regularly has attended the Lancaster County PA sale for the past 13 years and frequently seas Thoroughbreds purchased for slaughter. Her not-for-profit organization generally has enough money to buy one horse a week. Although she did not know the name or racing accomplishments of the gray gelding in the ring on April 3, she entered the bidding.

"I felt an immediate connection to him when he walked into the ring," said Young, director of Lost and Found Horse Rescue Foundation in York, PA. It was just me and the meat man bidding and I knew I was supposed to have this horse. I had no idea who he was. He had a ton of presence about him and I knew he didn't deserve this fate.

Young soon learned the horses's name - Notably Frosty, a ten year old Alaskan Frost gelding who wone two stakes races and over $401,000 in a seven season career. Thanks to Young's winning $525 bid, the gelding is headed for retirement at his breeders Ocala farm instead of a slaughterhouse.

Notably Frosty's papers came with him so Young contacted Chris Heyde in Washington, D.C. and Young soon found his breeders, Patti and Arthur Hawkesworth in Florida. He had won 2 stakes races then was claimed for $40,000 in 2003 at Pimlico and the then-seven-year-old gradually descended the claiming ranks. No doubt slowing dows after more than 50 starts, he changed hands more than eight times.

The breeders kept track of Notably Frosty until he fell off the radar screen sometime after he finished second in a $4,000 claiming race at Charles Town for owner-trainer Donald Poper in the final start of his career.

Ecstatic to hear their horse had been saved, the Hawkesworths agreed to let him live at their Golden Hawk Farm. Patti Hawkesworth cried when Young told her about the gelding.

We will all fax and call tomorrow. I faxed all day and I think some senators are out of paper already. Weldon 54 had a great post to help with our boycott - call the chamber of commerce's and express your disgust.

God bless our Barbaro and 452 - sleepless night.

Horses are extremely sensitive creatures. They can vivually recognize their owner a half a mile away. They can hear their owner farther away than that. They can hear a human heart beat when standing next to a person. They have a keen sense of smell. All of this is backed by scientific research.

Horses are herd animals and depend on their relationships with others in the herd in order to survive. They develop intricate relationships with each other and become very devoted to each other. They also depend on their senses to survive. They can smell blood. They know what the odor indicates....death. Horses will fight like hell to survive. They will do extraordinary things to get away from a predator. In the wild they are the prey. They know that when one of their own is terrified, they all need to be terrified and get away as fast as possible. They are forced to stand and listen to the screams and smell the odors and watch the fear in their comrads eyes, and they cannot escape, no matter how hard they try.

No, I can't imagine what they must go through on the day they are slaughtered. It must be a living hell. I only pray that those who bring this misery will experience it one day. I'm pretty sure they will.

They have been through so much with him and love him so much. He loves them too. I trust the way they take care of him. I just want him to be wherever he would be happiest. I care about Barbaro more than I care about myself getting to see Barbaro. Don't get me wrong, to be able to see Barbaro in person would be my dream but I'm trying to think of the horse and the Jackson's first.

May you continue to heal an get stronger Barbaro so that getting to go home with mommy and daddy becomes a reality.

That's like all the loopholes everyone is coming up with today. It's a loophole for the wrong side.

If the Senate starts to focus on that...they will just come up with some useless compromise that says...The killing can continue but the meat has to be safe for consumption...

The killing can continue but the method has to be more humane...

No. We are after the ban.

We are for the bill, as written. No offers of compromise; no distractions. Just the ban on slaughter.

I think Shelley would agree with this approach. We have talked about this kind of thing today, in other contexts.

I have to run...I have to go out for awhile.

I don't mean to be harsh in shooting down your idea, Debra.

We just have to go straight down the middle on this one.

An Idea for More Exposure of This Issue..

Dr. Phil is from Texas and has great national visibility with his show. We should contact him. Any thoughts on this????

    Marilyn,
No Problem as we were getting heated here thinking about how to shut down the plant in Texas tomorrow. Everyone is very tired and we're all here for the same reason.

    BTW,
Sorry if this was posted already,

Horse slaughter fight moves to Texas city

KAUFMAN, Texas, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act is stalled in Congress, but the fight over using horses for human food is heating up in Kaufman, Texas.

The Washington Times said that while the House has passed a ban on the slaughter of horses for human consumption, it will likely not be debated in the Senate until November, which makes an upcoming Kaufman trial involving the Dallas Crown horse slaughter plant key in the ongoing controversy.

At issue in the the Texas case, scheduled to begin on Jan. 29, is whether a zoning board overstepped its authority by trying to close the slaughter facility.

The company could move outside the city, but Dallas Crown's lawyer, Mark Calabria, said the company is intent on fighting the move. He contended the ongoing movement to ban the slaughter of horses in the United States will do little to eliminate the practice.

"It isn't going to stop or prevent the slaughtering of horses for human consumption," he told the Times. "Anyone who thinks that is quite naive. There are already plants in Canada and Mexico, South and Central America, Romania, Asia, Mongolia."

Unfortunately, it looks like all the loopholes are working for the other side. That's the reason the Kaufman plant is still operating.

Time for a loophole for the good guys!!!!

Good articles about Bobby and owners! Enjoyed reading them. I know this crew is in for the long haul and Bobby will do just fine. He may be a bit spoild but in the end he is worth it!!! I know it will take a year to grow a new hoof, I just spend a year working with my mare, special shoes, painting her hoofs every night for six months and she didn't have hoof wall gone! Wish I could be there to help.

Have a good night Bobby, sweet dreams of carrots and greens!

It is almost 12:00 am and it is really hard to think of going to sleep right now. I cannot hardly bear the thought of the actions taking place in the Texas a.m. I truly want to thank all of you nonstop folks working on these senators, you all deserve a commendation or some sort of recogniton for your active roles in getting history changed. With all of you behind it pushing-it must happen.

Barbaro, you have inspired so many, to do so much for the equine world. I think that you are the best image of an equine ambassador we could ever have (even WITH hay in your mane) LOL I am constantly thinking of you, happy and now---bucking? I donot want to hear about that anymore,ya hear me,youngun? I will put you in the corner in time-out, and this would mean, no stud muffins, or peppermints, so..you best be minding yourself. You better pay attention to what the Dr. says and not be a bad Big Ole Boy, ya hear? Sleep well, my big precious one, just dream oif bucking and running, there is always time for that later--like a year from now, okay?

ALEX-Do you know if the Foggy memorial will be on regular cable-like ESPN, ESPN2, or TV-G (Turner South)? I know it will probably be on HRTV, but I do not have satellite company that provides that channel.

Prayers for Erin & family, Mike Rea & family, and Ms. Jake & Daisy & Mom, Barbara Kerr & Dan (How are things Barbara?)

Prayers for all creatures large and small EVERYWHERE, ESPECIALLY IN KAUFMAN, TEXAS---:(

Hi, Debra WI: I was reading your post from the article involving the slaughter house in Kaufmann, Texas.

Mr. Calabria's statement in regards to horse slaughtering that will continue to go on in other countries........well, I suppose this is true but we DON'T WANT THEM IN AMERICA.

This is going to be "history in the making"....once we get these horrible slaughter houses closed here then it will be a matter of time before other countries may also ban these "evil" businesses.

I probably won't sleep tonight either.......I can just hear those horses begging to be set free.

GOD BE WITH THE HORSES AND WITH US..........

Please,Father, save the 400 Horses in Texas.

This is my first time posting on here, but I figured I had to say something.. 'Bobby' was my Derby horse since his maiden. Some of my happiest days in a rough point of my life were spent frantically refreshing Equibase to find out how the little horse nobody else knew about(but were quickly finding out!), Barbaro, did in his race that day. I followed him religiously, and I absolutely adored him. What's not to love about that face? Then he went and won the Kentucky Derby, in spectacular style, and I was sure he would win the Triple Crown. He would've, if the racing gods hadn't been so cruel.

He didn't get to show that he was one of the altime greats on the racetrack, though I'm sure he would've. But he's still showing how massive his heart is, and how much of a champion he truly is-- I see that, every time I read the words "Another comfortable night."

Love you, Barbaro! There's no way you're going away any time soon.

Socorro: I agree with you........I'm so upset with this issue that I would love to throw up in their faces.............starting with the attorney for Dallas Crown, Mr. Calabria.........

As always - hoping to hear ACN for Bobby.

Hoping too, that today we can get those politicians who have been blinded by "whatever" to open their eyes to the truth and take action at once to permanently close the slaughterhouses in this country.

    #######

God Bless each and every one of you for the time you have given to this MOST worthy cause and for the committment to stay with it until they are closed permanently and forever. I, too, will not rest until this has happened.
