Barbaro Updates: 31

updates are now here.

Update 361: Yesterday I interviewed Dan Hendricks over the telephone. This is the second short telephone interview I have conducted for the site, the first: Tom Albatrani. The purpose of the interviews is to highlight how our horseman have been impacted by Barbaro while also providing insight into our leading trainers.

While I did not know Tom Albatrani before my interview, I did know many people who knew him, so I was pretty hopeful of getting to talk to him. I do not know anyone who knows Dan Hendricks, so I had no idea if I he would talk to me. Anyway, once I got his number, I called. I was hoping for his answering machine so i could leave a detailed message in the hopes he would call back (this is what happened with Tom, and he called back within 15 minutes). Not the case for Dan Hendricks, he answered his phone. I tried to explain the purpose of the call, and as I was explaining he simply said, sure, ask me what you want. It was a great conversation, and Dan was very forthcoming. We ended up talking about places back in the UK etc!

Anyway, the purpose of the interview was Barbaro, here is what he had to say when I posed a very open ended question: "Tell me about the Preakness and your thoughts for Barbaro":

Dan Hendricks: The Preakness turned out to be the biggest roller coaster of emotions a lot of us have ever experienced in horse racing. I came with one of the favourites (Brother Derek) to win the race. As we waited for the race with all the build up first Barbaro broke through the gate early. . Subsequently Brother Derek broke poorly, which took him out of our game plan.Then the devastating site of Seeing Barbaro being pulled up so soon after the start just left a big hole in my stomach. It was the biggest drop in the roller coaster ride. I find it very difficult to explain how you feel when things like this happen. I was asked shortly after the race how my horse was. I knew he was OK, but we were all more concerned with Barbaro.

Everyday we come to work. We read and learn what we can about Barbaro's condition. My thoughts are for him, the Jackson's and Michael Matz. They showed tremendous class through all of this. There are still lingering effects to this incident and were all pulling for Barbaro. Its certainly not business as usual. We feel for horses more than people typically know. Recently we had a horse, Cozy Guy, a gelding, who we tried everything we could do to save his life after a sickness knowing he would never run again, it was very sad when he did not pull through. Good luck to all.

Dan Hendricks also let me know Brother Derek breezed this morning, 59 4/5ths (5/8ths mile).

For information on Cozy Guy: Long, costly fight for the life of a barn favorite (thanks Ernie)

Update 360: Saw Kathy Anderson as I was leaving (a very hot) Fair Hill this morning. She also visited Bobby yesterday and said he was "chipper". Mrs. Jackson was visiting at the time Kathy was there. We talked a little bit about the issues that Bobby faces, especially given the positive news we heard yesterday. It seems there are three issues:

a. the left hind needs to grow hoof, there has been some growth around the coronet band. This is very important, and obviously something they are checking and working on everyday (I think we know they change the bandage / cast on it everyday etc.)

b. they need to avoid Bobby contracting Laminitis in any of his other three feet. I do not know what they are doing to prevent this, but know they are doing everything experts would do. I did ask Kathy if she had checked the front feet for herself, and she had.

c. the right hind needs to continue to heal, we have heard only positive things about this lately.

Its nice to see Bobby coverage when there is good news, apparently Good Morning America had a little coverage (comment 1:15 Cathy):

Guys, "Good Morning America" this morning was running on the bottom of their screen about our sweetie Barbaro and how is leg is heeling and that the owner commenting he continues to seem bright and happy. I did not listen to the entire broadcast as they may have slipped in a 10 second update from the announcers, but was still great to see on national tv at 7:00AM EST.Barbaro got billing on his health along with Pres. Bush and Castro! Out of the three, you know who I would pick for President!!

Update 359: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (tuesday night). I saw Michael Matz as I was coming on to the track for my third set. He had just heard from Dean Richardson. Barbaro also received another massage last night after Michael's evening visit.
updated wednesday 7:15am

Update 358: This site has now served over a million pageviews! Yesterday's article in the Philadelphia Inquirer helped the site to its second largest day, about 17,000 visits. The site was also mentioned in Horsetalk NZ and this Philly Inquirer blog.

The creativity continues with the following poems:

For Barbaro...

Happy thoughts,
healing prayers,
filling up our minds.
All being sent for the glorious cause,
Barbaro-
exquisite equine.

Inspiration to so many,
strong in countless ways.
With bated breath, on pins and needles,
we patiently wait out the days.

Our hope is that we will someday see you
grazing in a beautiful pasture.
Head held high, no more pain,
A blessing from our master.

Dear, sweet boy, how our hearts cry out
each and every day,
That the miracle of you, Barbaro
will continue to light our way.

So continue to heal,
get stronger with time,
we're cheering you on from the stands.
For you are the definition of courage,
of hope, placed in God's hands.

Barbaro's Recovery Road

Another day that goes into night -
Our Barbaro "Bobby" continues his fight!
Powerful will and spirit so strong -
Keeps healing right as time marches along!

The resounding cadence he clearly hears -
Turns prayerful tears back to joyful cheers!
Stable and comfortable, caring and able-
Now he is greater than legend Clark Gable.

This Hero brings nations to vigilant prayer-
and his GOOD NEWS travels faster than air.
Peoples voices heard far and wide-
Cheering our "Bobby" on his new ride!

Songs of praise ring through our land-
Adapts to his sling with a helping hand!
Loving nuzzles Team Barbaro returns-
Wiser and smarter than man, "Bobby" learns!

He's captured our hearts and given us hope-
Be soldier or child, he helps everyone cope!
Setbacks in life will only be fleeting-
As Barbaro "Bobby" hears our song's greeting!

Raises us all to stand on mountain tops --
Barbaro's recovery road never stops.
Mystifying faith, he walks on stormy seas-
O' Lael legs move gracefully as you please.

Glimpses of him in us, inside ledge's boulders-
'We are strong when we are on your shoulders.'
Moving slowly, trotting faster, eager to see-
Keeps raising us up greater than we can ever be!

Our Barbaro's recovery road may be long -
His hero's heart rhythms inspire poetic song!
Ambassadors from all states must unite-
Campaigning for Barbaro's toughest fight!

One that will change horseracing forever -
Horse and Jockey athletes safer together!
Make up your mind and do what you must-
For our Barbaro's sake, he's asking your trust!

"Citizens unite" says Barbaro's voice-
Show Congress Track Safety is the right choice!
Sixteen thousand have visited this site.
No small feat in facing Barbaro's plight!

Help make a difference, heed Barbaro's call-
When this goes before Congress this coming Fall.
Take time to review all the facts of this case-
Go to Petition Online thinking with grace.

What if I had to travel recovery's road too?-
How would I make things better for you?
Won't you please take some time to stop in?
Where positive difference helps Barbaro win!

Recovery road may appear seemingly long-
But our Barbaro continues to keep us strong.
"The pen is mighter than the sword", once said.
Rest easier now Barbaro comfortably in bed.

Reporters and journalists are helping out too-
Spreading good news on campaign's trail for you.
Come join voices and hands with our Barbaro-
Be his ambassadors to correct life's "uh oh"!

Change for better, recovery's road new name-
Help Barbaro with us make our new claim!
Our Congress listens and understands-
What is needed for Track Safety in our lands!

Good morning Alex and congratulations!!! Your fame is spreading far and wide. I don't know if you get tired of hearing it or not, but we're so grateful to have this place to check for Barbaro updates. We have the added bonus of being able to communicate with others who have the same care and concern for the big guy that we do.

Good morning Barbaro family. How talented are the many fans of Barbaro. The poetry is wonderful. Barbaro is quite an inspiration but yet I continue to be amazed at how diverse the talents are of those who care so much for him.

Praying for another positive update!!!!

No, really, thats great news, Alex...it's shows the numbers of how many people are still so very interested in Bobby's recovery. And we all know that there is power in numbers. Kudo's, Alex!

Can anyone tell me what happened at Del Mar yesterday? Was there another breakdown?

Posted by: Therese at August 2, 2006 10:48 AM

Hello Therese,

Wow - that's alot of hits. Hmmm - I wonder how many I've made. Na - no time to count ;-)

Initially the Petition had a lot of momentum. Then it seemed to fade away. (I'm signer No. 9) I think between ShelleyA and myself - we're bringing up reminders several times a day to try to catch anyone who might not know anything about it. Since I'm usually one of the first on in the morning, I try to do the early reminders.

Alex,

Congratulations on the impressive stats and the growing community of caring for Barbaro that they represent. Now, with your computer guy hat on, can you tell us, what's the difference between a visit and a pageview? Is a visit a post and a view just a hit, or...?

Thanks for sharing your good news as we await the hoped-for ACN....

Good Morning Barbaro fans, etc.,

Hoping for another comfortable night.

Saw this article in the local news (not sure if it's a repeat or not)

http://delawareonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060802/SPORTS/608020340/1002

Left hind leg biggest concern for BarbaroOriginal injuries healing, but laminitis takes time

KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. -- Barbaro's right hind leg bones are healing so well his cast could have been off by now if not for the laminitis in his other hind leg.

Dr. Dean Richardson said Tuesday that the painful hoof disease is preventing the Kentucky Derby winner's cast from being removed because the colt could not protect himself by bearing more weight on the left hind leg.

Barbaro suffered life-threatening injuries when he broke three bones above and below his right rear ankle at the start of the May 20 Preakness.

If he hadn't had the founder [laminitis] on his left hind, he'd probably be out of the cast and he'd probably be in a splinted bandage on the shoe," Richardson said. "That's where we'd likely be. I can't do that because his left hind is the more sore of the two legs right now."

Barbaro's left hind hoof, which was stricken with a severe case of laminitis, is improving and has started to show slight signs of re-growing after 80 percent of it was removed. Barbaro needs to regrow the hoof if he is to have any chance of walking.

"It's too early to see true hoof wall forming," Richardson said. "But the coronary band, the part of the hoof that's the equivalent of the nail bed where the hoof is going to grow down from, that looks very good. It's too early to see a lot."

Barbaro has been in an intensive care stall at the New Bolton Center since his horrific injuries in the second race of the Triple Crown series. Richardson said after performing surgery that the pastern bone was shattered in "20-plus pieces."

"Everything looks good under the cast," Richardson said. "The X-rays looked as good as they can look."

Richardson said the colt's prognosis was "poor" after he developed laminitis, but eased off that grim outlook Tuesday.

"I don't know. Every day that goes by, it's great," he said. "He has so long to go I don't even think about the prognosis. We just work on the horse and hope he continues to be happy."

Barbaro looks bright and happy, with a voracious appetite, to those who see him. Owner Gretchen Jackson usually visits twice daily to feed Barbaro fresh-cut grass from her nearby farm.

"It makes me feel better about the poor guy stuck in there," she said. "He likes it."

Posted by: lynnette at August 2, 2006 11:06 AM

If you read the article about New Joysey Jeff - it's hard not to get angry. The length of time for the arrival of the ambulance is excessive. There is NO WAY something like that should happen. They MUST correct whatever caused the delay. If they need to have extra ambulances on hand in different locations, so be it! You'd think by now they would know of the potential problems and have a game plan in place for each possible situation.

I just can't stand the idea of a horse suffering that long.

Janice

Just hoping to hear that you had another comfortable night, big guy. Got the pictures I ordered of you winning the Derby and you and Messaging in the barn at Pimlico. You sure are a good looking hunk!!!
Have a good day, beauty.
Love,
Pat

Posted by: Pat from Florida at August 2, 2006 11:11 AM

Thanks, Janice.
I just read about the horrific demise of new Joysey Jeff.(ESPN) What the hell is going on? That poor animal had to walk 60 yards on a busted up leg, because the turf was too wet for an ambulance to access? Why were any horses allowed out there if that was the case? Wrong, wrong, wrong. Shame on them.
My heartfelt prayers go out to the New Joysey Jeff connections. What a shame. What a tragedy for that poor animal.

Again prayers to all who are involved in bringing this horse back to health! "ACN" is what I look for every morning!

Thanks for the good news again today, Alex.

Therese,
I'm glad your outrage equals mine. If these tracks can't improve the safety of both horse and rider, they will never see horse racing return to the popularity it once had. Who could possibly witness that kind of tragedy week after week and remain unaffected?

Janice

I'm glad to hear that our boy had ACN but too bad that New Joisey Jeff's family can't say the same thing.

I would really like to be able to get statistics about the injury/death rate from previous eras and compare them with the present. Does it just SEEM worse or is it?

Posted by: Janice from Florida at August 2, 2006 11:20 AM

good news bobby. ACN, now we can a have a good day.

Janice, I don't know what the stats say, all I know is that how are people going to continue to support this sport if the tragedies that are occurring aren't corrected? Something(s) MUST change. I think I am going to boycott my attendance until there is official and sufficient change in the conditions regarding safety to our beloved horses, and jockeys. It's almost criminal, isn't it?

Every day - we hear "Another Comfortable Night" -and we can breathe easier, knowing that the miracle continues. I'm KVELLIN' MIT NACHAS every day. Thanks, Alex, for reporting to us.

And a big Mazel T'ov on the recognition this site is getting. The word is spreading, that's for sure.

Thanks Alex, for posting the powerful poetry and the track safety petition link in the updates.

Add my voice to the many who are outraged by New Joysey Jeff's forced march of 60 yards with a broken leg before being put out of his misery. As I was contemplating the scenario described, I recalled the many horse rescue stories I've seen on Animal Planet involving bringing a helicopter in to airlift a horse out of an inaccessible canyon, or a mucky ditch, etc etc. Why can't this type of rescue/recovery be S.O.P. at the tracks? This must not be allowed to happen again. Not being able to access an injured horse at a track with an ambulance, in this day and age, is simply unthinkable.

If not for Barbaro, I (and I'm sure many others like me, who love horses but until now did not follow racing) most likely would not even be aware of this. If not for Barbaro . . .

Living proof of the living truth.

Stay strong Barbaro.

Posted by: Danielle at August 2, 2006 11:44 AM

Therese,
I believe there are probably many things that need to be improved - the surface of the track being just one of them. Insiders probably have more insight than an observer but not always so. Sometimes it takes someone with an impartial, unbiased eye to really see what changes can help both human and horse. My big gripe is that the humans know the danger and choose to do what they do anyway. Nobody asks the horse or gives it a choice and yet they pay the ultimate price.

Janice

This is a wonderful site dedicated to the recovery of Barbaro but I cannot deal with all the other horses that are dying on the tracks. This is getting overwhelming for me to read about this on an almost daily basis. The event at Del Mar last night is so inhumane I am just astounded. Why are the owners of these animals not demanding better treatment and care? What is wrong with these people?

Posted by: anne m at August 2, 2006 11:49 AM

I agree with you completely. I keep thinking there must be something we can do but don't know what.

Does anyone know a way to contact the track officials? We'll probably have to wait until our West Coast friends get on later for help with that.

Make sure to eat all your veggies and try to be nice while you play with the doctors. I know, a boy gotta have some fun, you little devil you. Goood Morning Bobby and everybody.

Bobby you made my local news this morning. I did a little bit of a "HA!!!! I told you SO!!" when the TV station did the report about you doing "SO WELL!" A couple of weeks ago I had to email them and set them straight about you..Gave them a little piece of mind, I did. They were all quick with the headlines using the "E" word as soon as the "L" word was announced. I told them to come to this website if they wanted the facts about you.

Speaking of which, WOW! Good going Alex! Thanks A MILLION !!!!

Hi Laurie in MN and Deb in WI. Hope to meet you guys sometime soon. I too was pleased that there are Angels at Canterbury.

Shannon and Zeena.. I had raised that pool question a couple of weeks ago after the news about poor Gallant Secret. I too was curious about the need for more pools and trained staff. I really hope that the Barbaro Fund can help in this area.

Off to "pretend to be working again" while I minimize and refresh my comptuer all day LOL! I know You all know what I am talking about too!!

Bobby you are an awesome force of greatness, courage, cooperation, strength, gentleness,... you're calm, cool, and collected...with a little bit of that OH SO CHARMING fiesty-ness that we all love so much.

oooopppps..I'm gonna be late for work AGAIN...

THERESE - the nightmare of poor New Joysey Jeff isn't "almost" criminal - IT IS CRIMINAL!!! Just another reminder of why I HATE racing! So maybe you're wondering why I'm on this site - it's because I LOVE horses! What is needed is a powerful (translate: famous) person to start raising hell about track conditions so this never happens again to another of God's creatures. Anyone know what celebs are animal people? I ASK EVERYONE who has reason to be encouraged about Barbaro today to stop and pray (and light a candle) for New Joysey Jeff and his family - PLEASE! My only consolation is that after the horror of his "forced march" he is now at peace and romping with some wonderful horses I have known and loved (especially Chancellor)and is also keeping watch over our buddy Barbaro!

...and now to a happier comment: it's hotter than blue blazes in CT, but it's a WONDERFUL day because of another comfortable night at New Bolton. Barbaro, you continue to inspire millions with your strength, courage, determination and intelligence - you CAN AND WILL be one of the survivors!!!

When you light your candles, remember that there are groups for PRADO, JACKS, DR R...as well as our hero! And don't forget to light one for New Joysey Jeff as well.
Here's to another comfy day to Barbaro, "The Champion of my Heart" - (t-shirt logo).

Good Morning, Team Barbaro!

One Million Hits!!!! That's about as fantastic to read as my other 3 favorite words...

ACN...

Sweet Bobby J - another sweltering day here in Chester County. Stay cool, stay feisty, keep healing. Hope you get lots of carrots, lots of scratchies, lots of sling time to rest your legs.

I don't know about anybody else, but I'd dress like a carrot to get into ICU at New Bolton...5 minutes, Dr. R...all I want is 5 minutes...heck, 1 minute will do...:)

Margaret, I need to add one more dedication page to "Barbaro's Dream" and then I'll send it to you. I don't have any problems with it appearing on another website. I'll work on that later today and can send it to you tomorrow...thank you so much.

Thanks to all of those who have read my story and have given their support (and tears). This was hard to write from an emotional standpoint and I almost left out Gallant Secret...but I kept looking at her photo and I couldn't let her go. Even though it flowed while I was writing last week, I was sitting in the reception area where my girlfriend works trying not to cry.

I'm loving all the poems and songs that are being created here...wonder if we should look into publishing a collection of all these works and donating proceeds to horse rescue organizations - something along those lines - or charities of the Jackon's and Matz's choice. All this creativity is coming out now and its glorious to see it. Just glorious. Keep it going if you feel inspired. If anybody has any children who feel the urge to write...let them and show it here. Children have the most beautiful perceptions. Heck, my son is 23 and he STILL is teaching me...still showing me new ways of seeing things - as does his beautiful fiance (17 days till their wedding...hooray! I'll be a mother-in-law! Make all the jokes you want about mothers-in-law - I'm loving this because we all know the next phase...GRANDCHILDREN!!!)

Anybody know any publishers?

Alex and Tim, congratulations on creating such a successful website. Did you ever think this would happen? This is a once-in-a-lifetime occurance - where so many people are coming together and practicing love, faith and compassion. In all this time of conflict and upheaval, this site is a haven for souls like me.

To whoever made the connection between my friend's comment that B is a messenger and Messaging...thank you for that confirmation. It was right in front of me all the time...Willow will be floored when I tell her on Friday.

My prayers go to New Jersey Jeff and his family. That is a heartbreaking situation...he is the latest casualty this year. So many beautiful animals suffering just tears me apart.

Time to light candles, get my errands done and come back to air conditioning before it gets too blazing hot today.

Sweet B, you are in my thoughts and prayers every day. Sent energy to both your hind legs last night

Healing to all,
Lyn Gilbert

Dearest Barbaro,

This morning, as I was getting ready for work with an ear cocked to the TV for weather news (hot, hot, hot) I heard the word “Barbaro”. I flung myself toward the TV set, where a picture of Dr. Richardson running his hand over you (could have been an old one) was playing. The announcer was saying something to the effect that your right hind was healing excellently with no problem, and the only area of concern was now the laminitis in the left hind leg. He then paused and said “This is an amazingly resilient horse”. Well, Mr. Newsman, this is not news to us, we’ve known that all along.

So, Barbaro, as I drove my one-hour, one-way commute to work this AM, I envisioned you still in the woods, but they are no longer deep and dark, you were standing in a sunshine-dappled glade, a cool breeze ruffling your mane and tail. I won’t rush things as I did before. Rest awhile, listen to the wonderful Dr. Richardson and NBC staff, who so obviously care for you. Won’t Mr. and Mrs. Jackson be overjoyed when you walk out of NBC! (Oops, I’m getting ahead of myself again…).

Love, will be at the vigil Saturday night 7 PM,

What an emotional roller coaster--

--thrilled for the success of this site

--ecstatic that Bobby had ACN (and was shown briefly on the Today Show news this morning)

--confused that Dr. R mentioned "founder" (I thought that was worse than L?)

--happy for the Jacksons' latest European victory

--overwhelmed realizing I haven't had time to read any posts since the 30th and now I'm giving up very reluctantly :(

--LISA, way too late to say I want 2 bracelets, too?(jfieberts@charter.net)

--hoping a small contribution I sent to Kennett last week made it into a basket

--interested that you can custom-order M&Ms, but it's pricey ($45 minimum gets you 4 bags), and you can get them in blue and green (Lael Stable colors) but you're limited basically character-wise to Go Barbaro! or We Believe! (anyone interested, check it out at mymms.com/bday28)

--devastated about New Joysey Jeff. If it was too slippery for the ambulance to get up the slope, it's too slippery for horses to be working out. I've been a fan of racing since the early '60s and I don't ever remember being afraid of breakdowns back in those days. THIS MUST STOP. I signed the petition a long time ago. Del Mar should be taken to task about this. It's totally disgusting.

Love all your beautiful poetry, everyone, and MIKE's race calls.

ALEX, you are so cool to post all these article links.

Bobby you are one smart dude. Folks at NBC, keep those cool breezes blowin' on our boy.

Grow, hoof, grow!

And to Walter, China, Mary L., and everyone who needs a ((((((hug))))) and some XOXO's, consider it done!

If I've left anyone out, forgive me...you're all amazing.

JANICE FROM FLORIDA - I agree with you on which celebrities are worthy of our devotion. However, we've all helped make some human celebrities rich - whether it's by purchasing a movie ticket, renting a dvd, buying a book etc. So I think this issue is so critical that it's time to "use" them!!! I've been watching Don Imus on MSNBC today (thanks to a day off from work!), and I know he's a wild man but he does have a horse ranch in the Southwest and they do a lot of charity work there with handicapped kids...so I'm going to attempt to find a contact email for him.
EVERYBODY, if you know of any celebs who are horse/animal people, please try to get them involved in the track safety nightmare. Like it or not, this country is most likely to hear the people with the biggest names!

these poems are getting to me! They're lovely. I sit in front of my computer blubbering!. My kids know when they hear that --it's about Barbaro.

!7,000 hits yesterday--I wondered why I couldn't get a comment through. Good going Barbaromaniacs.

Would someone please tell me the address to light a candle? I can't seem to find it.

I'm so happy ( and daily relieved) to get the morning update on Bobby. Each report is a gift! One day at a time for our boy.

I have a picture up in my room at school of Barbaro. It says, "Believe in miracles." People walk in and will ask why I have a picture of a horse on my wall. I explain, "THAT'S BARBARO!!"

Enough of my chatting--time to get ready for work. Please hold down the fort today, you guys are great.

In spirit and courage, coming from within.
You uplift us all, showing character and grace,
Showing how possible it is to stay in the race--
Barbaro, you have lit the way,
All who love you will continue to hope and pray--
That progress is made, and you will be a healty

Grazing in pastures,under a sky so sunny blue,
A miracle in our world, that did come true.

I check this site, thanks to Alex & his team, to stay on top of EVERY snippet of news about you. Thanks you, Gretchen & Roy, and thank you Team Barbaro for persevering the struggle and saving his life!!! Bobby's spirit sparkles through the toughest times!

Barbaro - I signed the petition for track upgrades, hopefully together we can save other horses!(heart) I really enjoy watching the videos of you, they display your intelligence, beauty and strength. I especically like the "Run for the roses", I watch it every day - it shows you in all your glory!!! They all make me cry, you are so precious! I would love to see a picture of Bobby wearing the rose wreath! :-) Hang in there baby!!

My heart also goes out to New Joysey Jeff(in heaven) and the people who cared about him, and all the other horses who have suffered cruel fates on the track at Del Mar. I can not believe people take the time to care and feed these beautiful animals and they let them be expendable. Where is the logic? common sense? Where is the love?

I love you Bobby XXXOOO, keep fighting!!

Jen

P.S. Hey Alex, can you put a link to "The Run for the Roses" under the Barbaro Fan Media link. I looked all over your site for it before -- but it is linked under the text "Barbaro as a baby?" and is not easy to find at the bottom of August Update 292. At the risk of sounding like a real downer, we can't forget about the dozens and dozens (hundreds and hundreds?) of small tracks out there that get NO coverage. When horses go down in big races, and at places like Del Mar, Arlington, Belmont, etc., they get pretty major coverage. But what about Finger Lakes? Mountaineer? All the harness tracks? My guess is that there are many more horses being put down than the general public hears about, and I would hope that one of the outcomes of this site (with all of its terrific activists) would be to raise awareness of the need for safety at ALL racetracks, for ALL horses (not just expensive ones with well-heeled connections--let's face it, of all the animals out there, Barbaro needs our help a lot less than many of the others), not to mention ALL jockeys.

OK, climbing down off the soapbox. The news yesterday about Barbaro is terrific--couldn't be happier. But across the country, there's a long way to go...

Lyn G.,
I think publishing these excerpts would be a fantastic idea. In fact, I mentioned it on Monday, but got no response that I saw. I had said that one of the charities could really benefit from the proceeds.

Sometimes I think these posts come so fast that folks don't get a chance to browse through all of them. I know my contacts just about pop out of my head by the time I get to the last one!!!

I think we should look into this!!! Perhaps it could help alot of horses.

Anyway, another great night for Bobby is the best news we could get and the fact that the broken bones have healed (at least that's what I got from Dr. R's comments, but for the L, Bobby would be in a splint), so now we just have to get hoof to grow. Not bad for a horse with super lousy odds to live.

Keep the faith, it's working so far!!!!

Tim, this site of yours is so overwhelmingly professional and thorough. I (like everyone else it seems) have been vigilantly following Barbaro's condition and progress. he indeed is unique and represents perhaps the pinnacle on this earth of all we (as humans) try to achieve....

Posted by: jq at August 2, 2006 1:07 PM

I was catching up on the articles and went to ESPN (the other article that really said 'the truth' on New Joysey Jeff.

I agree with everyone it's hard to get angry with the track etc., One almost wants to say, ok guys, you try walking that distance with a newly broken ankle, foot, etc., and see how it feels... then maybe they would do something. I agree with C. Jaffe like Animal Planet there are ways to get the animal(horse) to a safe place..

Okay, I'm done --- thanks for listening..

GO Barbaro!! Grow that hoof!!

Posted by: lynnette at August 2, 2006 1:07 PM

Well put Therese about the terrible fate of New Joysey Jeff - why the heck did they let the horses run if they couldn't even access the track??? Then they knew not to let the rest go after him......

If they are going to allow young horses to race before they are even fully grown with strong legs to run on, then they should be doing everything possible to ensure they run in the safest conditions. All tracks aren't going to invest in the millions of $$ for new racing surfaces - that's the reality. But for God's sake, improve the track conditions and don't allow horses to run under possibly dangerous conditions.

Truth is - they shouldn't start them until 3 YO anyways. Make the triple crown for 4 YO's and spread out the time between races, like in Canada. Our triple crown races start in June and end in August. Do it for the sake of the horses.

As always - prayers for a steady recovery dear Barbaro.

anne m...

Thank you for the email addresses of the president and horsemans service group at Del Mar.
(presidentjoeh@dmtc.com)and (Horsemansservicelisai@dmtc.com)
I have expressed my outrage to them both for their irresponsibility in the tragic chain of events leading up to New Joysey Jeffs tragic and probobly preventable demise. Shame on them.
Everyone...take action, please, let them know they were irresponsible in letting a horse go out on a track that was too wet and slippery for the equine ambulance to access it!!! The horse had to wait 19 minutes for the ambulance, and then hobble 60 yards to get to it with a severe compound fracture of its front leg. Sick and wrong. Someone needs to be held responsible for this.

Great news about our sweet Barbaro...thank you to EVERYONE out there who is so caring and concerned about Barbaro and other horses and praying so fervently for his recovery...he has already worked his miracle...we are finally taking action to protect these precious creatures...Believe in Miralces...his name is Barbaro...How can I get a Barbaro bracelet???

Thank you Jennie,
When I have time tonight, I will go over all this wonderful information and hopefully come up with a plan of action.

While I'm as ecstatic as everyone else about Barbaro, I can't tolerate knowing that thousands of horses every week are facing the fate of New Joisey Jeff. Most of them won't have the opportunity that Bobby has to receive treatment from the "best" in equine care.

Thanks for posting that link again. It's REALLY important that we remember the vote is coming up on September 7. If any of you have not contactacted your representatives yet, PLEASE do so. We're running out of time!!!
I am trying to find out if there is anything else that we can do as a group to help HR503 pass.

We have so many people here that care that it would be a shame not to "use" us in some way.

I have e-mailed my representative asking his stand on this several times. Have not gotten a reply. I see that he has a local office and I'm going to try to go over there in person today.

I know there are quite a few issues we are interested in but time is running out for this one. Think we need to channel our energies into this for the next few weeks.

As long as Barbaro remains stable and keeps having ACN, let's rally for this Bill.

Thanks

ACN YES!

I am looking forward to the day you go home big boy.

Thanks for all the support in the petition too, you guys. I was watching Americas Most Wanted last Saturday and it was dedicated to Adam Walsh, John Walsh's murdered son. You would not believe what they had to go through to get the new Federal law passed on sexual offenders. It is mind boggleing that it did not pass last year. Yes they had to bring it back. Poor Jessica Lunsford, and how many other kids, had to go thru all that pain and suffering for those politicians to realize that a change had to come. Which brings me back to our cause. This will be a real battle. I mean if John Walsh had to fight for Adam's law, imagine the struggle for this. However, it can be done. But we will need more than 370 sigs on the petition, we need thousands! Keep telling everyone you know. They may think you are nutty, but we need to show that everyday American's are concerned enough to want a change. I admit it, I am discouraged, but I have started to notice that now we are getting more men to sign, not just ladies who love horses. We CAN do it. For Gallant Secret, New Joysey Jeff, and all the other beautiful horses who have given their all for our pleasure. Lets help make it safer for them and the brave men like Edgar who ride them all the way to victory.

I went out for my run this morning listening to my IPOD when one of my favorite songs from the 80s started playing. The chorus goes something like this:

"Here's to you my little love with blessings from above. Now let the day begin."

The next song that came on was U2s Walk On.

Both songs took on a new meaning to me this morning.

Alex thanks again for this site!

Barbaro you are the best!

Very delighted that Barbaro is getting better and stronger with each passing day God is listening to all our prayers. I will pray and light candles every single day until I see him getting out of NBC and I will continue praising the Lord for his miracle.
Those news about Del Mar and others places that horses are dying because of negligence are just killing me. Something has to be done to prevent these tragedies and Pronto! The celebrities involvement is a great idea.They have a lot of power changing the minds of people specially the politicians.I will light a candle for that poor creature and his connections.I will never put a foot on racetracks like that.
Alex congrats on your success with this wonderful site.I feel at home here.You deserve all the credits for all the hard work and time spend to give us all the updates from our heroe,our beloved Barbaro.I am so blessed I found this site.

An Idea for the DelMar incident.

I know that there are a few here who have mentioned that their line of work is marketing, writing and Public Relations.

Perhaps one of you talented folks could draft us a professional and rational General Letter that cites the incident at Del Mar and all the recent breakdowns. This letter can then be used by anyone here and sent to the contacts at our own local racetracks. We would simply be reminding them to not let this "Jeff" incident occur at thier facility.

I am just thinking that it is a way to spread the "Message" and give us an opportunity to begin to act as group.

Wadda ya think?

Another restful night! St. Francis is walking right along side of you, Barbaro, and angels are watching over you, too. We thank God and the UPenn/New Bolton Center veterinary team for taking such excellent care of you. Barbaro, keep nipping and swinging; and, enjoy your apples, carrots, mints, and sugar cubes! Love Ya, Donna & Ed L.

Good morning Barbaro and friends! I'm glad to see some people still talking about the incident at Del Mar with New Joysey Jeff. We talked about it alot last night (West Coast People!). It's important to send those letters to Del Mar. I plan on doing so today. As more people wake up and come to the site today, maybe we can get some ideas generated about things we can do. We have to try. Barbaro is helping to pave the way for change. While track surface probably did not play a role with him, it has brought the awareness to people so we can make change and help to save others.

Please light a candle at gratfulness.org for our fallen horses like Gallant Secret and New Joysey Jeff. The are in group "angels". Please continue to light them for our Bobby too. Grow hoof grow!!!!

Barbaro you go Boy!!!! I just love it that the news is now on a positive note again for quite awhile. I hope and pray it stays that way. Barbaro you are so strong and so smart. You are my inspiration I am hypothyroid and have trouble losing weight and I need to get out there and get walking so I can lose weight. I am looking to you for inspiration. Being hypo makes my legs and joints hurt somewhat but I think if Barbaro can be strong and go through what he is going through well then I can go through a little discomfort as well. Plus if I lose weight it will help my cholesterol and blood pressure. So Barbaro you are my hero and my inspiration. I am just so proud of you.

Alex thank you so much for your updates they mean so much to all of us. Knowing that Barbaro had a good night and is ok allows me to get away from this computer and do things that I need to do. Today we are going to Madison Wisconsin to go school supply shopping for my daughter. I plan on walking when the weather is no longer in the 90's here. These things I can do knowing Barbaro is ok. Barbaro is a fighter he is an inspiration.

Thank you so much to the Jackson's for this wonderful horse who means so much to me and to others. Thank you for giving him this chance. People tell me I should be able to just get out there and walk and do it for my own good but ya know sometimes we need a reason to do it. We need someone or something to look up to. Barbaro is who I look up to. He really is my hero and my inspiration. Maybe by the time Barbaro gets out of the hospital I will have lost alot of weight and will have lower cholesterol and blood pressure.

God Bless all of you.

Mary Langkamp-

That's great that Barbaro inspires you to walk.

I am recovering from a major hip surgery and finally starting to get active again. Sometimes when I'm walking/running it still hurts but I push on. Thinking of Barbaro is what pushes me on. I think, if he can do it I can do it, and it helps me continue on when I feel I can't walk another step. This horse is truly an inspiration for me and many others.

Replying to Jo's message below, good idea! But the person you really want to raise awareness in combination with Viggo is John Fusco,the screenwriter. He was involved with "Hidalgo," "Spirit, Stallion of the Cimmaron," and owns a ranch in Vermont for his American Paint Horses. IF we are thinking big, why not get him involved??

Another great night for Bobby!! Hooray!! I sure would have had all my horses out of Del Mar by now. What is wrong with those owners? The best thing they could do is move on out and go somewheres else. That would literally force Del Mar to change their track surface. I would like to know why Jeff was on the turf course if it was so wet!!! I thought they didn't run horses on a turf course like that.

Alex, Had no idea over 1 million people have visited you website until early this am. Barbaro is so excited everyone is going to pray for him along with others (Jacksons, TEAM BARBARO, Edgar, Mike Rea & family, others injured horses, the continuation of Michael's miracle. Barbaro thinks
we should change the poem he helped write to include the new corrected facts which came straight from the horse's mouth (even though Barbaro knows it's coming from yours). He's feeling well enough to ask---

Alex, can you somehow get the counter to show the physical numbers/hits as each person or horse visits???

Here is the new corrected revised addition version of Barbaro's Recovery Road with Barbaro's nickering approval---still laughing inside! He says keep the powerful healing vibes coming!!!!!

~~~~~Barbaro's Recovery Road~~~~~
by Wm, Cl Shaw, & Barbaro Jackson
Another day that goes into night -
Our Barbaro "Bobby" continues his fight!
Powerful will and spirit so strong -
Keeps healing right as time marches along!
The resounding cadence he clearly hears -
Turns prayerful tears back to joyful cheers!
Stable and comfortable, caring and able-
Now he is greater than legend Clark Gable.
This Hero brings nations to vigilant prayer-
and his GOOD NEWS travels faster than air!
Peoples voices heard far and wide-
Cheering our "Bobby" on his new ride!
Songs of praise ring through our land-
Adapts to his sling with a helping hand!
Loving nuzzles Team Barbaro returns-
Wiser and smarter than man, "Bobby" learns!
He's captured our hearts and given us Hope-
Be soldier or child, he helps everyone Cope!
Setbacks in life will only be fleeting-
As Barbaro "Bobby" hears our song's greeting!
Raises us all to stand on mountain tops --
Barbaro's Recovery Road never stops.
Mystifying faith, he walks on stormy seas-
O' Lael legs move gracefully as you please.
Glimpses of him in us, inside ledge's boulders-
'We are strong when we are on your shoulders.'
Moving slowly, trotting faster, eager to see-
Keeps raising us up greater than we can ever be!
Our Barbaro's REcovery Road may be long -
His hero's heart rhythms inspire poetic song!
Ambassadors from all states must unite-
Campaigning for Barbaro's toughest fight!
One that will change horseracing forever -
Horse and Jockey athletes safer together!
Make up your mind and do what you must-
For our Barbaro's sake, he's asking your trust!
"Citizens unite" says Barbaro's voice-
Show Congress Track Safety is the right choice!
Eleven thousand strong daily visit this site.
No small feat in facing Barbaro's plight!
Help make a difference, heed Barbaro's call-
When this goes before Congress this coming Fall.
Take time to review all the facts of this case-
Go to Petition Online thinking with grace.
What if I had to travel Recovery's Road too?-
How would I make things better for you?
Won't you please take some time to stop in?
Where positive difference helps Barbaro win!
Recovery Road may appear seemingly long-
But our Barbaro continues to keep us strong.
"The pen is mighter than the sword", once said.
Rest easier now "Bobby" comfortably in bed!
Reporters and journalists are helping out too-
Spreading GOOD NEWS on campaign's trail for you.
Come join voices and hands with our Barbaro-
Be his ambassadors to correct life's "uh oh"!
Change for better, Recovery's Road new name-
Help Barbaro with us make our new claim!
Our Congress listens and understands-
What is needed for Track Safety in our lands!
Two hundred thousand plus travel page views-
as Tim Woolley Racing keeps spreading good news!
Barbaro's Recovery Road may be long-
with adoring fans keeping Barbaro strong.
Beyond the prayers must our pensmanship speak-
Help make our horse athletes safer every week!
Thousands can make all the difference today-
Sign the petiton while Barbaro munches top hay!
He thanks you with nods, bows, and a wink-
For making his day while all of you think!
What if I had to travel recovery's road too?
How would I make things better for you?
Remember Michael's Miracle as all of us pray-
Keep lighting those candles each night and day!
Whispering Barbaro to heal better than ever!
Reminding Team Barbaro 'Never Say Never.'
Listen, there's whispers 'Don't You Quit!'
Not on our watch while all of us sit!
Watch Miracles happen on Recovery's Road
Let Mike Rea's and Barbaro's stories be told!
Lightens our spirits, we breathe easier now-
while GOOD NEWS spreads like wildfire, WOW!
Raise up your voices and sing us a song-
as Barbaro's & Mike's Recovery Road is long!
Send your GOOD WISHES and special gifts today-
While Barbaro eats special Lael grass and hay!
More than prayer, we now must all think-
Save our horse racing athletes from the brink!
Of broken down horses, we will talk no more-
as it's time for "Bobby" to snooze and snore!
YOU CAN MAKE the greatest difference for him-
Sign that petition Online helps Barbaro win!
A new kind of race so pick up your pace-
Come in and visit and show us your face!
Stop "Oh No's" and "Uh Oh's" before they begin-
Barbaro's campaign travels where noone has been!
Small step for horses, one giant step for men-
Start today with a click of a key instead of when?
Change Recovery's Road name to Better Road soon-
Time is of essence as this day approaches noon!
Takes but a moment, a flashback in time-
Moments keep passing, hearing Barbaro's chime!
Go if you must, but remember these words-
Todays Hopes are Tomorrows Can Dos...
Make Racing Tracks safer for thoroughbred herds-
Jockeys and Horses need to hear the good news!
America cares, how much will that be?
Putting words into action for citizens to see-
Campaign for Barbaro until we make a difference!
Recovery Road is our Better Road with reverence!
Read about Del Mar - I am heartbroken - what is wrong with people - Del Mar should be more prepared for this sort of thing - couldn't get the ambulance close to the horse so walk the horse to the ambulance - how stupid - that track should be sued until the rafters come down.
I love the list of names - Dynavilla is great, of course I love Dr Dean, My Brother is Who - love it!!!
Good morning report again -- thank you, Alex. More good news... The horses in Saratoga have a day off... due to the high heat the powers that be (New York Racing Assn) decided it was too dangerous to allow the horses to run today's (Wednesday)races. Wondering what the connection between NYRA's decision and the fact that many people are looking at the safety of race horses these days. Thanks, Bobby, for holding the space open for that, and to Tim and Alex for giving us a place to grow a more respectful connection with all horses. Enjoy your day in your air conditioned stall, Bobby.
just read about the horrific demise of new "Joysey Jeff.(ESPN) What the hell is going on? That poor animal had to walk 60 yards on a busted up leg, because the turf was too wet for an ambulance to access? Why were any horses allowed out there if that was the case? Wrong, wrong, wrong. Shame on them.
My heartfelt prayers go out to the New Joysey Jeff connections. What a shame. What a tragedy for that poor animal."
SECOND THAT, IN SPADES. ENTIRELY UNACCEPTABLE. From now on, let the humans and their vehicles go forth and see if they can safely access the turf track after a rain, BEFORE anyone gives the trainers the go-ahead to put their horses out there. Maybe if a few track stewards fall down and get an "owie", they'll think twice.
My heart just aches for this horse, and for his trainer, who is obviously devastated.
Barbaro, I am so happy you are doing well today. I hope everything continues to go well. I am happy for you and sad for the other horse that had to walk on a broken leg. I don't understand why some people think it is okay for animals to suffer. I will never understand it to the day I die. I hope and pray you never have to suffer, Barbaro. My prayer is for you to be okay and other animals don't have to needlessly suffer. It's so cruel and brutal-it breaks my heart in a million pieces. I love you, Barbaro, and hope you have a wonderful day!
LISA IN NYC - From your post re your New York connections, I'm feeling like I stepped on more expert toes (see my post 8-2-06 12:03 pm) - consider it a case of "a (deeply concerned)fool rushing in." HOWEVER, in my defense I will restate my firm belief that (right or wrong), the folks with the big names tend to be heard - after all, who's heard of Nancy in Hamden, CT?
So what do you propose as the next step? Speaking for myself, since I can't possibly read all these posts when I'm working, I'd love to be on your email lists for updates/suggestions - time is of the essence here!
HEY EVERYONE......IMPORTANT HR503 INFORMATION
Just hung up the phone with John Hettinger. He is the gentleman that was the focus of the article in The Blood-Horse magazine. He is a member of the The Jockey Club, a trustee for the New York Racing Association and received a Special Eclipse Award in 2000. He is one of the leaders in the movement to ban horse slaughter.
I contacted his farm and, when I told them what I was calling about, they immediately gave me his direct number in Saratoga.
Told him about our group and that we wanted to help. He was very grateful and spent some time talking to me. We discussed the possibility of some of us going to Washington. He gave me the name and number of the person handling the public relations for this campaign and suggested that I call her and see if it would be something that she might want to put together.
We don't have much time so we need to act quickly.
Please let me know if any of you on the east coast would be willing to go to Washington for this cause. I'd like to have an approximate number before I speak to her.
I will be out for most of the afternoon. Could someone PLEASE repost this message throughout the day so we see what kind of response we get.
Then I'll call her tomorrow morning.
Thanks.
Shelley...sounds really encouraging. I'm a little too far east, but I'll make sure I re-post this message throughout the day.
Anne m. -
thank you for the addresses of the group at Del Mar. I too have sent e-mails to them expressing my shock. I hope they do something if enough people complain.
Alex - congratulations on your milestone achievement of one million pageviews! And thank you for providing accurate updates every day. It is very much appreciated.
Healing thoughts to precious Barbaro!
Good Morning, Beautiful One. Another good night!
Good Morning, Family!
Anita and Cathy, you made me laugh! I know there are things going on in the world, but the minute any Bobby news pops on the TV, I RUN to turn it up!
Beautiful poem, and congrats to Tim and Alex! And still many thanks for the daily updates.
For those who say racing is cruel and hate it, please don't. We are all concerned, for EVERY horse! The Wonderful Jacksons, Tim and Alex are, for the most part, the RULE and not the exception.
Del Mar officials are working hard to try to figure out what is wrong....they have x-rayed and sonogrammed the track, and are baffled.
No horseperson ever wants to see a breakdown and that is a fear we all share everytime horses go to post.
There is an AP article out, about Dr. Dean talking about the Laminitis, I don't know if it has been posted yet. That is the part that makes me sad, he has been recovering so well in his right hind, but the cast can't be taken off since he can't put weight on it due to the left hind. But there are signs of some recovery.
Three horses played Seabiscuit, one was Rich in Dallas, who is at Old Friends. Michael sent me a beautiful print of him for some volunteer work which I have in my "sports room".
Love to all,
Susan
Teresa please post the addresses of the Del Mar people. I would also like to send them my thoughts on this horific accident.
I'm with Shelly in Toronto. They're ripping up tracks to check for defects. They're blaming owners for not disclosing previous ailments. We know the injuries result from blowing these horses out too early. Maybe those in favor of running the Triple Crown with 3 year olds should let their kids blow their arms out as Little League pitchers. Oh, no we wouldn't want that.
Janice,
Don't know but it wouldn't be until after Labor Day when they resume. Just wanted to have an idea of how many might be able to go before I make the call.
Posted by: ShelleyA at August 2, 2006 2:34 PM
ShelleyA - Depending on my workload and the date (of the hearing I guess), I might be interested. Please keep us informed. Now, exactly what would we be doing?...
Posted by: Anita at August 2, 2006 2:35 PM
Hooray! Can now take a sip of my coffee and a deep breath after another good update!
You are doing so good Buddy! Amazing how many people are checking up on you every day! You are so beautiful and courageous Barbaro and obviously inspiring!!!!
Anita
Not exactly sure but John Hettinger said that they might be able to set something up for a group of us to visit several of the representatives in Washington to get the additional support needed. They now have 203 co-sponsers and need 218 to pass.
We COULD possibly make the difference.
I don't really know much about politics so this is new ground for me also.
Sally and others interested in voicing their concern...here is the copy of the message from anne m with the address in it:
If anyone is interested I e-mailed both the presidnet of DelMar and the Director of Horsemans Services to convey my outrage over last nights incident with New Joysey Jeff. If you care to do so here are their e-mails
