Barbaro Updates: 26

updates are now here.

Update 338: Bernadini was super impressive in the Jim Dandy. I am not entirely sure what he beat, but nevertheless he did not get out of third gear. Congratulations!

Update 337: Melissa sent me this poem, which included the following in her e-mail:

I've been working on this poem for some weeks but couldn't finish it after the horrible news two weeks ago. Now, after yesterday's good news, I was able to finish it. Feel free to share it with anyone including Peter, Michael, the Jacksons, Edgar Prado and all who are close to Bobby.

poem:

"Barbaro"
by
Melissa Harden

Who wouldn't be charmed?
By the most precious sight
Of a foal being born
After a long restless night

Eyes anxiously watch
As he climbs to his feet
Nuzzling so close
To his mother's heartbeat

We think of his dam
We think of his sire
Will he have her quiet calm?
While retaining his fire?

Those answers are known
Only to God it is said
So we leave it to Him
As we go to our beds.

We watch foals play games
While amidst their peers
Whether they'll race
Is best left to seers.

Then the time comes
That all mother's hate
He must leave her side
To be schooled at the gate

What's with this saddle?
Who's this on my back?
You mean I must run
Out here on this track.

He continues to strengthen
His endurance increases
Through most careful workouts
And frustrating breezes

He could be the one
If our watches don't lie
Shall we aim for the Derby?
And give it a try

He wins all his races
He fills us with pride
This is a great horse
With luck on his side

He then wins the Derby
They are calling him great
He goes to the Preakness
And meets a cruel fate?

In the midst of adversity
He touches our hearts
We see his ability
To be patient and smart

We admire his quiet courage
As he endeavors to heal
Each day we're encouraged
By his very strong will

There was no Triple Crown
No jubilant mood
But his name will resound
When we think fortitude

For no claim of greatness
Ever had such a measure
As his grace under stress
More precious than treasure

And his name, Barbaro
For all those who know him
Will always mean hero
His fame never to dim.

Sweet Talker ran a great race to just get headed in the Diana. I asked Graham about her chances on thursday. He was a little concerned with her travel schedule, but she certainly showed up today, just losing on the wire! Also, nice win for Master of Disaster at Delaware for Steve Klesaris.

Update 336: Redaspen was sixth in the stake today at Philadelphia. Perhaps she got a little tired in her first start back. Tim said Victor Molina gave her a great ride and gave her every opportunity. After a nine month layoff it was great to see her return to the races. Lets hope she can move forward from this start.

Yahoo! News has the following article today: Barbaro's trainer not getting hopes up which includes the following excerpt:

The medical updates on Barbaro seem encouraging, yet the trainer of the ailing Kentucky Derby winner isn't allowing himself to become too optimistic.

"I'm not getting my hopes up," Michael Matz said Saturday. "I'm just taking it one day at a time -- but he's trying."

I had asked Michael during the week whether he was getting a little more optimistic (as we were getting all the positive news) and his answer to me was similar to the above.

Update 335: A nice article from the Washington Post : Barbaro a 'Happy Horse' As He Adapts to His Situation rehashes generally what we know. I do like the closing:

The outpouring of support from the public, Sweeney said, has shown no signs of slowing.

"People see traits in him they wish they had, a warrior's spirit," Sweeney said. "He's a hero and he has no agenda. People can make him what they need in their life."

I just received an e-mail from a friend of mine at Delaware Park noting the raffle drawing for the Mike Rea Relief Fund is to be monday, I may try to get down for that (I owe for a few tickets!):

On Monday the Mustang for Mike Rea will be drawn here at Delaware Park. The fourth race is to be named after Mike Rea and the drawing is expected to take place about that time to. The car is on display in the grove and the drawing will be in the winners circle. I think there are still some tickets in the horsemens office for purchase.

The latest report about Mike seems a little more upbeat.

Update 334: Another comfortable night for Barbaro last night (friday night). Just got a voice mail from Peter Brette. Sorry for the late update.

Lisa - the braclets are awesome - I can hardly wait till everything is finalized and I can get mine - yeehaa.

Bobby - wait until you see what Lisa has done for you - you will be so proud. Ask one of your nurses to bring you a laptop so you can see. Sweet Boy - we love you so much - and we want the world to see it!!!

Oh, what a good day...I must run to the store, while I can...I trust everyone here to hold Bobby's fort down...wish I could give him a great big hug...

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 5:16 PM

Just talked to Diane at Kennett Florist - those people are the best! I was wondering about the overnight shift at NBC ... whether they are getting any of the goodies that are sent or not. She said they would check to see what "shifts" are worked and get back to me with the number of people at night. I'd like to send some snacks to those good folks in our name.

I can just picture that in the wee hours it is every bit as important to have an alert, caring, competent staff paying attention to Barbaro and all the other animals. Want them to know they are not forgotten! So just going on record to say I will try to cover that for at least one "night" for us (if the info they get shows that's appropriate)!

Alex, I am also so interested in what Eduardo and Ricardo (or Rafael...sorry not clear on his first name) have to say about their relationship with Bobby. If it is too intrusive to ask them, I understand. We just all feel for them, and know they must love this horse. If you can, please let them know that they are remembered and thanked for their care of Bobby. And I think of Peter often and hope he is doing well.

Glad Barbaro had an ACN and hope he is having an ACD (another comfortable day)! Go Red Aspen! And safety to all other Fair Hill horses and all horses who run today!

Pamela-

I too am confused (and confusing) about names...
Mine is usually masculine but not in my case.

Almost all my business mail comes addressed to Mr.
not Ms. and the powers that be are confused too
because I received a selective service registration card whem I turned 18...

Anyway thanks for your delightful sense of humor which keeps things on the light side!

Sweet Boy, you are being helped by exceptional humans, with extraordinary help from above...

I wonder if anyone horse knowledgable can comment on exercise for Bobby....? I read that his condition calls for it, maybe 5 or 6 ten minute walks outside per day...equal to about an hour...

I constantly wonder if anything like this is possible, or will be on the near horizon...?? I just think everything should fit in naturally and everything is important in his healing and wellbeing. Thanks..

Posted by: Christine at July 29, 2006 5:30 PM

I think a little sunshine would do him a world of good. I know in the past when I have been sick with a cold the doctor said to sit outside for a while - the sunshine helps heal and gives you Vitimin C. Perhaps he would get to excited being outside - not sure?????

So two things:

1 the person who told us about philadephiapark.com--thank you. I live several thousand miles from there. Now hopefully I'll be able to see Redaspen in about an hour and a half.
2 Alex again thank you for setting up some guide lines. I hope you'll go back (assuming you have time)and re-read things. You will see when the board generally erupts. Then you can decide what you need or don't need to do about it.

Hi Chris Byers,

I briefly read the post of July 28th ans was dismayed that Mike's family felt like they were intruding on this site. I feel so bad for them. I am very glad Alex set up some guidelines. It is unfortunate when a few people can ruin the happy and upbeat tone of this board. I hope anyone who is interested in Barbaro and his recovery feel like they are able to express their opinion. Keep it happy and upbeat!!

Christine:

Not yet. Bobby's right hind leg (the one that was broken) has not fused yet. Some of it has and is healing. But the pastern bone hasn't fused.

I can hear you asking what the heck a pastern bone is. I want you to visualize a horse. Looking down the leg you'll see the knee and then the ankle (fetlock in horsey terms). The long bone between is called the cannon bone--think tibia in people talk.

Okay, from the ankle to the hoof is a slanted joint. That slanted joint is what is the pastern. We need that to fuse.

Now on Bobby's left hind most of the hoof was removed because of laminitis. This is a terrible disease. The bone instead the hoof (called the coffin bone) detached from the inner hoof wall. Yes, this hurts. Think of it as having your fingernail yanked from where it comes out of your fingers.

So Bobby has a protective cast on this leg. It's changed everyday and they do dressings on it. But it takes forever to grow out. So Bobby is on nutritional supplements and is recieving all kinds of cutting edge treatments.

So while he's been derailed from getting out of the hospital--you are on the right track. A bit premature for now. But hang in there with Bobby and us. He needs you.

We are praying for one another, our ill companion animals, our horses heading out to race and BARBARO. I feel terrible that his family feels that they've intruded...in my opinion they have not!!!

Margaret…
I agree with you on your post about recent pictures of Bobby. We all know that he is very thin right now and it is very hard to see him that way. We will tend to become alarmed and that would be wrong being his condition now has nothing to do with him getting better.

Someone posted a link to Upenn yesterday for a picture of Bobby in his sling. I have seen the picture before but this link loaded the page up huge and you could see the wear on Bobby’s body from the sling and his bridle very loose around his nose. It made me cry, but then I had to focus on the good and his progress now.

What is beautiful (thank you Alex) is the pictures from “Barbaro arrives at the Preakness” from yesterday’s update. One in particular, Bobby reaching his nose all the way over to his neighbors stall to check him out. I downloaded that as my wallpaper so I can see his spirit and thirst for life anytime, all the time. I hope I was allowed to do that. Just nice seeing him happy and I will keep looking at my wallpaper until I have a new one of him outside the hospital.

Any playful pictures of Bobby are most welcomed here.

Margot...I too signed the H.R.503 but I must live in a state (NJ) that the reps don't care enough to contact us.

I don't know Sally, but you are exactly right about being outdoors..it does a world of good. I really don't want to stir up controversies with my speculations and the NBC docs KNOW BEST, especially Dr. R - the best. It's just that that's what I read about the condition... plus, he's lost alot of muscle mass and has been confined for so long.. Maybe they're waiting for the right leg to be totally solid again....? ::groan::

A couple days ago people were discussing what the American Horse Slaughter Amendment Act was. Basically-there are 3 slaughterhouses in America that kill horses (90,000+) a year for overseas consumption. The opponents of the bill are the slaughterhouses (obviously) and others who feel that passing this would not eliminate slaughtering, it would just make it more "underground" and less humane. BUT-it is NOT humane as it is. I will spare details because it is very disturbing. What needs to happen is that farms/private stables throughout the country must be able to find foster and/or adoption care for these animals. We must prove that there will be homes for these horses to go to. We can all write to congress and offer to sponsor a horse. I don't know exactly who to contact, but if everybody chipped in to sponsor, or even adopt one horse, that is one more that could be saved. Let's put these slaughterhouses out of business! If you want to get involved to help this bill get passed-please contact your state senator or congressman urging your views.

I think that once Barbaro is less dependant on the sling (for support and not fun), he might be able to start walking outside of his stall. As long as he feels he needs the sling, he's not ready to start exercising. Just my opinion..

Bobby,
Hooray another good night..May God continue to bless you each and every day. We love you so much. Thank you Alex for the updates..God Bless all Barbaro Caretakers and Family.

Here is a very good article from the Daily Racing Forum.
Some progress noted for Barbaro

By GLENYE CAIN

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro appears to be making some progress in his recovery from a shattered right hind leg and severe laminitis in his left leg.The 3-year-old colt remains in intensive care at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center veterinary hospital, but an update the university issued Friday included a positive assessment from its chief surgeon, Dr. Dean Richardson, who changed Barbaro's right hind cast on Wednesday night."We took new radiographs, and they look good," Richardson said. "No problems were evident."The colt's left hind cast, which protects his laminitic foot, is being changed daily so the hospital team can treat the foot and monitor it for signs of infection. Richardson removed about 80 percent of Barbaro's left hoof wall earlier this month after the colt developed laminitis, a hoof disease often related to excessive weight-bearing.In a Thoroughbred Times online report Friday, Richardson noted that the left hoof appears to be slowly regrowing. He also said that "there were no signs of infection" in the colt's right hind leg."His prognosis remains very guarded, but we're not even remotely considering quitting on him right now," Richardson said. "The horse looks too good."

Team Barbaro:

ACN - fantastic. Alex, no apology needed for the lateness. We can all be very patient for news of our Sweet Bobby J.

To the Mike Rea family/friends - visit here whenever you need support. Just let us know you're here and we'll step up to help you. I've kept Mike and his family in my prayers/energy sending.

Barbaro - BATH DAY!!!! Hooray!!! We know the left rear hoof is showing growth and we'll just take one day at at time. We also can't forget the fusing of the pastern bone...fuse, bone, fuse...

Gonna sign off - will be back in the evening to help tuck our B into bed...everybody stay cool - those who have horses racing today - may they run like the wind and finish safely - then come back to the stables to cool down for a well-deserved rest.

Healing to all,
Lyn Gilbert

But as someone who's been visitng this site multiple times every day since Barbaro's misfortune, i'd be indeed remiss for not passing on all the many, many times i've wanted to say " Thank You SO VERY Much for your incredibly comprehensive, ceaseless & obviously heartfelt attention to this site " . . impossible to imagine what it must demand of you.

Here's to a well deserved, peaceful & looooong vacation for you Soon, right in there with every loving wish for a Full & Speedy recovery for our Magnificent Barbaro.

I have to tell everyone about something that I just saw while working out at the gym. Something (as a Barbaromaniac) I had to take as a sign. There was a sign hanging up at the gym and written across the top were the letters "ACN". I couldn't believe my eyes as only a Barbaromaniac would know these letters to mean what it means. I continued reading and the sign was about something called the "ACN" opportunity. For the life of me I couldn't figure out what they were using the letters for but I know what we use them for. Needless to say I just got home and checked my computer and Alex had posted the update. I knew it was a positive sign for Bobby as soon as I saw it!

Hi everybody
I miss you all.

I'm still at my mom's -- no Internet! I'm at the library right now.

So I am delighted to hear that Bobby is progressing. I do take to heart Alex's suggestion that we remember we are on a long road.

I have tried to glance through the last day or so; lovely photos of the Preakness day, Alex, thank you.

There was A LOT to scroll past in the comments!!! :) Thank you for the rules, Alex. I was so sad to see you finally have to say it, but glad that you did.

Driving alone through the countryside for so many hours coming here, everything reminded me of Barbaro -- every horse, so many thoughts. Lots of time for prayer.

Mary L -- I am pulling for you, and your test results, as always. Glad to see you are hanging around the board.

Dee -- Hope you are getting good news on your health mystery. Praying for you also.

Pamela -- I hope you are having a good day. Miss you, girl!

I don't think I'll be able to check in every day, but I am with you all in spirit.

Just got back from the barn.

Yipeee.."Another Good Night"!

Pamela glad to see you back on. We missed your humor yesterday.

Thank you, God for another comfortable night for our beloved Barbaro! Please continue to watch over him, his caregivers, and his family and friends.

Great report on you, Dear Barbaro! Keep up the good work, Sweet Boy! You are doing great, and we are all here for you--for the duration! Love you!

Susan in TX - I am so pleased to hear that your China kitty is home. I continue to pray for her recovery.

Mary L in Ohio, I hope that today finds you feeling better. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I took Walter back to the Vet this morning and he is pleased with her progress. She's walking a little more each day, and I hope that before too long, she will be walking normally again. Thank you all again for keeping my Walter in your thoughts and prayers. If you would like to light candles for her, here is her page:
http://www.gratefulness.org/candles/candles.cfm?l=eng&gi=walt

I wore on of my Barbaro T-Shirts to the Vet for good luck. (Hahaha...like I need a reason-I am afraid I'm going to wear them out!) I don't remember seeing a link to this particular shirt posted, (forgive me if it's a duplicate) but I got it from the Kentucky Derby Museum store. A portion of the proceeds are being donated to the Barbaro fund. Here is the link in case you are interested:

Lisa, I went to your website and sent an email that I would like 5 bracelets, please. But just in case, here is my email: Honersnme@aol.com.

Have a wonderful day, Team Barbaro. Love to you all! Sue xoxox

Sly One didn't win, but I could not see what position he finished in. He was either 3rd, 4th, or 5th. They were all so close!! When the Saints didn't win either. Tom Durkin didn't announce him in the top 4.

When you get done reading the article from the Washington Post that Alex has linked, there are some photos from the Kentucky Derby that I haven't seen before. At the bottom of the article to the right is a box for the Kentucky Derby. At the bottom of that box is a link to Photos-Barbaro sprints to victory. Most of them I've seen, but there is one of Edgar Prado and Michael Matz hugging after the Derby. Pretty uplifting.

Thanks Lynda, It was showing #5 on my racing channel..have to look for some results.

Alex: I am so glad your going to try to track down Barbaro's groomers and hot walkers. I feel bad for them, groomers and those that take care of the horse everyday all day often form the strongest bond. And I am sure you can attest to that. I was amazed that noone wanted to ask them how they were dealing with Barbaro's accident and recovery.

I was thinking that I would like to send them something and wondered if I sent it to Michael's barn do you think they would get it? Go Red Aspen!

I agree with Alex, we all want to be uplifted by a visit to this site. Practicing good boundaries is an excellent idea.

What a lovely article in the Washington Post :-)

"People see traits in him they wish they had, a warrior's spirit," Sweeney said. "He's a hero and he has no agenda. People can make him what they need in their life."

This is so true! Seems that Mike has that same warrior's spirit as Bobby :-)

Thank you, Alex.

Hi Everyone!

Good going, Barbaro! So, proud of you for being a good boy and listening to the Dr. Glad to hear that everything is healing well and we will pray it continues. No doubt, it will.

Alex, thank you for the update and not to worry about updates being later. We are just so pleased to get these each day. I know you are very busy and to make this happen, is so special for me and I think I can speak for the rest, and all of us at the Barbaro Team.

Mike Rea and Family...join us often. We enjoy you and want to participate in your healing process, too!

Okay, about the Bracelets..I know we have DebraWI, campainging for barbaro...site...is she doing the bracelets OR Lisa Morin?

I know SusanC. is making some and explained on the website about the red/white design.

Bobby, you're the only one that can take me away from it, but I had to see if there was any news on you. I love you and I BELIEVE IN YOU-ALWAYS!

Bonnie-

Loved your post from yesterday about Barbaro as a bodhisattva...the Buddhist idea of a being that forgoes their own enlightenment to stay on earth and help others through their example, at least that's my general understanding of it...

I have been astounded at the outpouring of feeling, emotion, energy etc. that has been generated by Barbaro and can't help but feel it would be a shame not to harness this energy and use it to do good.

What a fitting way to honor him...

For Linda G: I don't know who you are and have actually never seen you post on here. I have not been on much lately as I have been busy. However, I do check the updates and positive vibes going on at this site. I would appreciate you leaving my name as well as the others you have listed out of your posts, it is rude. We do not come here for a chat room daily, we come here for the same reasons you do. I am a horse owner and racehorse owner and have been following the Tim Woolley site for Barbaro updates as well as the informative information which is offered and asked of us "horsey" people. I made the first comments last night regarding a response from someone on this site regarding INTENSE religous preaching which included many negative thoughts. People here can write what they feel and should be allowed to and I should be allowed to offer my insight as well, without ever telling someone what to post. Strange how the folks you listed in your post included some of the knowledgable folks on this site helping others. Until you actually KNOW what is going on in here, stop taking it upon yourself to list names of people you obviously have no knowledge of, and then trying to tell them to post somewhere else. That was very rude and uncalled for......

You can also go on Equibase and create a virtual stable of any horses you would like to follow and then you will receive emails of their updaters, races, workouts, etc...you can also check on race results of everything. Each racetrack also has their own sites. Nothing better than watching it on TV (if you can't be at the actual track)....Bloodhorse has many results too!

An answer and info for the person asking about the ancestral significance of Barbaro's white heal spot:
The Godolphin Arabian was one of the foundation sires of all Thoroughbreds. He is said to have been quite small, very Arabian in type, and had a small white marking on his heel. In Arabian horse lore, the white spot is the emblem of swiftness.
When I was a young girl, my favorite book was Marguerite Henry's "King of the Wind." It is a beautiful little novel about Sham, The Godolphin Arabian. It is beautifully illustrated by Wesley Dennis. The illustrations look so much like Barbaro!
Marguerite Henry's historical/fictional tale seems to have been intensly researched. When one reads it, (or any history of the Godolphin) it is so easy to see parallells and striking similarities in the ultimate destinys of both The Godolphin, and Barbaro.
Barbaro IS a horse of Destiny. With the injury, his work has just begun. His job now, is to survive, and to continue to bring people together in his cause of benefit to the horse world.
He has opened up more discussion of horse related issues of great and immediate import, ranging from Equine medicine, racetrack safety, the fate of the Premarin mares and foals, horse slaughter, selling to overseas buyers, etc etc. Please, let's all help him in his "work." That's what WE are here for. Let us spread the word, and keep the spotlight on these and other horse issues. And not only here and at horse sites, but to as much of the world as possible. He is our banner and inspiration.
God Bless you Barbaro, and the people who are caring for you...and all of the people who love you. Like your great ancester, you are indeed a horse of destiny.

Re: Latest Update... if you link to the actual article, they have some comments about Dr. R (how NBC is backing him in what he said in press conference of two weeks ago)...You know, I certainly hope that people aren't now saying Dr R
exaggerated Bobby's condition...Good Lord...no wonder he said he would be second-guessed...I initially thought he was referring to his methods of treatment...Never thought people would look back and say I thought you told me he was not going to make it, etc...
We Barbaro fans know that Bobby is still in serious condition...Things could still go very bad very fast...But, for right now, Bobby is happy and lovin life...I don't like the inferences
re Dr. R....grrrr

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 7:09 PM

Hi Jeannette C:
The withers is the prominent ridge where the neck and the back join. At the withers, powerful muscles of the neck and shoulders attach to the elongated spines of the second to sixth thoracic vertebrae. The height of a horse is measured vertically from the withers to the ground, because the withers is the horse's highest constant point.

Gloria, Heres an article on the groom that helped
keep Barbaro from falling and damaging his leg, he in essance saved Barbaro's life, for which we are all grateful, he is a true hero.
The Thoroughbred Times has an excellent article: Matz groom Orozco recalls harrowing moments at Preakness that highlights the immediate reactions of those at Pimlico at the time of the horrific incident. Clearly we make decisions in fleeting moments that make have long term consequences, and perhaps Rafael Orozco's decision to get to Barbaro soonest may have helped significantly in the recovery process. The following is an excerpt:

"I want to help," Orozco said. "I see that when he passed in front of me that his rear right leg was broke and I said, 'Oh my God' and I [ran] out there.

"The jockey tried to pull him up, you know, and my only reaction was to help Barbaro. I don't want him to fall down and hurt his leg more or something."

People doing what they do because that is what they do.

Thanks for acknowledging my post Pamela....

Someone mentioned that they wondered why Dr. Anderson didn't post any longer.....

Maybe it is because a lot of these posts are getting crazier and crazier....What professional would want to be associated with it? Also, like I said in my other post....This site is a dignified site for horse and racing fans and some of this posting is taking away from the integrity of this website.

It would be nice if the people posting would remember Tim Woolleys' name is on this site....and the craziness is disrespectful to what he is trying to create and to what he and Alex and others are doing.

Ridiculous...malicious...crazy postings here are no different than being invited into someone's home and tearing it up.

I am happy Barbaro has had another good night and that yesterday's posting about Mike Rea was positive.

I believe in Barbaro.

Amidst the hullabaloo last night, I posted a message that I don't think anyone should tell me how to think or what I should post on a message board. Shortly thereafter, I received a personal attack that called me egocentric, arrogant, young, and uneducated with flawed thinking. In deference to Alex, I am moving away from my keyboard! I'm not one to back down, but responding to the inaccuracy and hypocrisy in that post will only generate more.

Hi Sharonlynn,

I'm also in NJ and frequently checking sites as Congress.gov for different legislation. For a quick find enter bill # in Legislation in Current Congress Box. Then click on bill number and press search.

Re HR503, there are 203 co sponsors. If I read the list right, the following reps from NJ are co sponsers This doesn't guarantee they will vote the same way, that's why we keep bugging them:

Frelinghuysen, LoBiondo, Pallone, Rothman, Andrews, Holt, Smith. Missing in Action - Garrett

For S1915, 21 co sponsors. Lautenberg and Menendez are co sponsors (Menendez also signed on when in the House)

Hope this helps.

Keep improving Mike and Bobby. Two VIP's (Very Important Patients)

Maybe, just maybe, Dr. Anderson doesn't post as often simply because SHE IS A DR. and has a hectic schedule. If you go back through the posts, most of the times that Dr. Anderson posted were in regard to serious changes in Barbaro's condition. Barbaro is stable again and is beginning to show signs of improvement. Alex and his people do a wonderful job of keeping us up to date on what's going on. I'm sure if anything changes with Barbaro, Alex will ask Dr. Anderson for her opinion and thoughts.

Most of us are not 'tearing up' anyone's house. Further, most of us wouldn't go to someone's elses house and tell them how they should live. THAT would be rude.

Most of the time this site offers hope, encouragement and an opportunity to learn. Sometimes we can even forget about our own hardships for a moment and just have a laugh or two.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has noticed that the site only takes a turn for the worse when certain people decide what this site 'should' be for and what the posters are 'allowed' to think. This site is what it is. If it does not meet your 'standards' then use your free will to chose another venue. Seriously, do you really believe that if someone wanted to send a horse to Tim for training that they would decide not to do so because of a message board? If so, then we should be thanked for our posts as I don't know anyone who would want to do business with such a fool.

Posted by: Joyce at July 29, 2006 7:40 PM

PLEASE, READ...

If anyone wants to sober up, they should go to Mike Rea's site and read the latest update...He is better, but the fight he is putting up is absolutely heroic...
His family mentions that they were so happy to read that we talk about Mike every day, and they came here to post a thank you...They were struck by so many comments regarding who could post what, and to whom, that they felt the need to APOLOGIZE TO US for, supposedly intruding.
I am known for my sense of humor, but I am deadly serious...This very bad. It made me cry to think that Mike Rea's family felt this way because of us! Whether you are a participant we should all be concerned.
I hope that each person will take some time to
read the update at Mike's site and appreciate this family's valiant struggle.
He and his family deserve our love, respect and
support.

Yes, I posted that, unfortunately, there are a few knuckleheads, and, that their family is our family...and to please come visit because we love them all!

Question for Alex: Alex, It's great that Bobby has started regrowing the hoof. I have a question about the lamani (probably spelled wrong). Do they regrow also? If I understand lamanitis, the failure of the lamani allow the coffin bone to rotate and fall. What happens to the lamani? Do they grow back also, or just stay balled up?

Such a relief for each day to have something to be thankful for concerning Bobby's recovery. Bobby you are never far from my thoughts, love and prayers. I try to imagine what is happening there at NBC and the best I can do is to imagine a hospital and it's patients and Doctors. I imagine a busy place during the day, should keep you interested, and quiet at night. Wonder if you all (horses) whinny and talk to each other. I know that you are the Head Horse ( being the undefeated 132 Kentucky Derby Winner, The Smatest and The Most Beautiful) of the herd.

Love and Prayers to you, Bobby

Every day now - I'm kvellin' mit nachas! In other words, bursting with joy when I see the wonderful progress of our wonderful Barbaro boy. WUNDERBAR!

Well over 1,000 candles now, and I visited Walter's as well - double digits.

Question - How does one create a group for candles (such as Barb and Walt)? Couldn't seem to find a way to do it. Please explain and/or direct me to the right place on the site to do it.

I want/need to set up a candle site for John & Judy's horse. They're the owners of my Blackie's barn. Their wonder boy, Irish Sport Horse 7 y.o. Stallion, White Diamond ("WD-40") (of whom I've previously raved to some of you, and sent pics to our email "splinter" group), whose 1st 3-day event I was privileged to attend - was pulled out of the jumping show at Lamplight Equestrian Center this past week, when something happened - they don't know what (no fall, no evident misstep, no rail down) - causing a major problem very high in his hind end. He's on stall rest, scheduled for a nuclear scan at Purdue (Indiana vet school; teaching hospital) and when I heard about it yesterday, and told John about the candle thing, he kind of lit up and acted like yes, he would like that.

So - can somebody please set up, or help me do so, a candle group for WD-40? THANK YOU.

All,

So glad to hear today's good news.

Here's the article on Orozco rushing to help Barbaro..........he was obviously very important to keeping Barbaro from any additional injury.

http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/search/searchdetail.asp?RecordNo=64284&Section=1

Also, I would love to see the bracelets.......Lisa could you please send pics to docb1417@yahoo.com.......still deciding how many I will order. thanks!

Posted by: Anne at July 29, 2006 7:59 PM

Hi Christian! I don't know if you'll see this but you made my day! Yes, there are some animals who respond to "energetic truth", they just know, they don't need to think about it, their innate knowledge tells them what to do. I see this in some dogs and some horses. I think it also has a lot to do with their owners or their handlers. If they too are evolved, conscious beings then the relationship sparks a kind of sacred experience. Like Mr. Orozco, he also responded intuitively to a situation without having to think about it when he jumped out on the track and held Barbaro back to prevent further injury.

Posted by: Bonnie MacRaith at July 29, 2006 7:59 PM

To Lisa (?) the bracelet lady:
I, too am interested in aquiring a bracelet when they are ready. Please, if you are able, would you E-Mail me at perfectenoughtoo@hotmail.com ?
Or, somehow let us all know the details when ready? Thank you.

I am also interested in finding out more about BARBARO'S half brother, PERFECT DRIFT. I viewed some photos of him today. He has the same spirit behind his eyes that our dear BARBARO has. A beautiful family resemblance. Little brother can carry on, on the track. Beautiful! Is he owned by BARBARO'S people?

The news about Mr Blowen's interest in horses that go to Japan is encouraging. I do fear for WAR EMBLEM, BAGO, and too many anonymous others who have not had their moment in the spotlight. Overseas selling,(to countries where people eat horses), whether for racing or for breeding, is just too dirty-a-little-secret not to have misgivings about. The fate of big, sweet, and swift FERDINAND should never be forgotten.

BARBARO, heal and live!

Tim, Alex, Thank you for this site. It is a focus point for positive energy, and a huge source of comfort. It keeps us close to BARBARO. We cannot touch him, but because of your generous efforts, he touches us.

Posted by: Linda from Michigan at July 29, 2006 8:01 PM

Superfecta thanks for the info. I know little about horseracing. "The Kielbasa Queen" has made me giggle. When I giggle I think of Barbaro and beam that joy up to NBC.

Morgan, good job. I posted earlier about biting my tongue--hard to do-- but effective. You might have noticed that 99% of the posts have been positive and respectful since the update. The attackers appear silenced. Good guests honor their host and I count you among the good guests.

I read that Barbaro is thin now? is that because of the injury? I keep reading that his appetite is very healthy. Would that not make him gain weight?

Maybe it's better to not have recent pictures. Some of us have to struggle to stay positive. A positive visual is better for the worry warts among us.....my name is Marky and I am a worry wart. Admission is the 1st step to healing.

Hey big boy can you hear me? I am learning about horses and delight in your courage.

Yes Margaret Yes...you know what (who) I am talking about...

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 8:22 PM

CJ-I know one of the vets at Purdue. Her name is Amanda Farr. She bought my Arabian colt and took him down to Indiana when she moved from Michigan. If she's on the team that is working on your friend's horse, he's in good hands!

Regarding laminae: The laminae are what connects the hoof wall to the underlying structures. When they weaken or die during laminitis/founder the coffin bone may then rotate downward which causes incredible pain. As the hoof wall grows out, new laminae will form. Some horses recover without a trace of having laminitis. Other horses will always have a misshapen hoof. On these horses, the white line is usually 'stretched' as well. It doesn't always look pretty, but corrective trimming and shoeing can allow the horse to live a fairly normal, comfortable life.

Posts of folks from racehorse owners and horsey people which I appreciate VERY much and find all the informative information not only helpful but think it is so wonderful so many new people are getting involved in horses, horse racing, horse advocation, and so on....

A lot of the guys have them, too.

Posted by: Susan E. at July 29, 2006 8:47 PM

Thanks David Litell and Anne for the info on the article about Rafael Orozco. Even though the people who perform the deeds don't think they are heroic, I feel that everyone who helped Barbaro that day was in fact doing an extraordinary job of reacting in just the right ways (as did Barbaro).

Yes, it is still a long road ahead, but our thanks to ALL those who made it possible for the journey to even begin.

Hope Bobby continues to improve, and even thrive on, the treatment he is receiving. I am confident he has the absolute best care he could have, from every angle and perspective.

Regarding the late-night shift--when I was in Kennett Square two weeks ago I went to Kennett Pizza and Pasta and had 2 large pizzas delivered at 10 pm (last delivery time on a Saturday). The guys at the Pizza place were very kind and included a note. There isn't a website, however their number is 610 444 9332. DebG:

Is it possible that this person over reacted? And then embarassingly took it out on you? Not that this is an excuse but maybe they stuck their foot in their mouth? Could be their too embarassed to speak up?

It's just a thought and I'm in no way condoning what was said to you. Naming people in a post like that is the same as targeting.

We have been gently reprimanded to be kind to one another. And to keep it horsey. That part should be easy because that is what has brought of alot us together in the first place.

Perhaps what we need is a link where "teachers" (I use that term loosely and it can be from all faiths) can put up a link or email addy. Just like the button for Contact Us. And within would be a whole list of addys. That way no one is going to feel like someone else is cramming things down their throats. It's a thought and an idea. I'm not promoting it anymore than such. If you like it--contact Alex and let's see where it'll go.

Besides the other good thing is that then others have your email addy and they can contact you offlist. I would however suggest an email set up for spammers just in case...

Barbaro in a mullett - noooooooooooooooooooway!!!
He is too hot as he is - no changes please. The tail does need to grow a big along with the hoof - but leave the rest alone - PLEASE!

And don't even go there with Dr Dean - way to hot for a mullet.

Posted by: Sally in Key West at July 29, 2006 8:53 PM

As to the new update: This is a perfect example of accepting reality and not being in denial of what is going no with Barbaro. A miracle is happening and our prayers relay so much about each of us, but the reality is the poor condition Barbaro is in and accepting that is the true way to help him heal. The positive aura surrounding him is wonderful but we must hang on to reality as well.....

Anne
Thank you so much for the site with the Orozco article. I knew from all the pics of him with Barbaro that they were close. I'm sure these past months have been hard for him, as well as Barbaro's groom. How could anyone spend that much time with Bobby and not fall completely in love with him? Look at all of us and we've never even met him! I stil wonder if Orozco and Hernendez have been able to visit him. Maybe Alex will b ableto tell us.

Posted by: Susan in TX at July 29, 2006 8:58 PM

I think he definitely falls into the horsey category...I am so glad to hear a little optomism coming from that direction, but Deb G is right...we have to temper it with some realism, too.

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 8:58 PM

Jean,
Thanks for providing something to the night shift at NBC when you were in the neighborhood. That was very thoughtful of you! I will work with Alie at Kennett on Monday to see what I can do. She returned my call this afternoon, and said she had all the info about the different shifts, but I was unavailable at that time, so will catch up with her Monday.

Continued good wishes to Barbaro and all who care for him.

Margaret: I have not been on here much lately. I see what you are trying to say though. I just don't think another special section is warranted as when new people come onto this board, some just want to learn more as well as enjoy being able to share what is going on in here. I don't follow all that is going on (and someone via email alerted me to the 4:02 p.m. posting last night - I did not even see it) all the time, but I see so many wonderful posts from everything to religion to horses to their own pains and experiences....I think it is great that so many are learning from this site as they can...

Posted by: Deb G. at July 29, 2006 9:00 PM

Sarah in FL...They change the "Cast" on the hoof that had laminitis...that needs to be checked for signs of infection...The leg with the broken bones is not changed every day...
You bring up a good point about the sling...but at this point, he has to have the relief from standing...

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 9:01 PM

You gals are too funny! Mullet?

My heart sinks when I read about Michael Matz not being optimistic. Perfectly normal for him to feel. His heart was completely broken when Barbaro suffered his injury and still is to watch his own training and efforts standing in a stall fighting for his life.....very hard.....
Can we send him something???

Posted by: Deb G. at July 29, 2006 9:04 PM

I don't know about the "should have been in a sling from day one..." I trust Dr. Rs vast experience in this matter...that is all he does is equine orthopedics...

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 9:04 PM

If he goes to NBC daily, perhaps have something sent there for him upon his arrival from Kennet Florist with a nice note from the Tim Woolley site folks...

Posted by: Deb G. at July 29, 2006 9:04 PM

I don't know, Deb G...I have no clue...I can't imagine the heartache he feels...

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 9:05 PM

The only thing I didn't agree with was the whole article up at Yahoo. They said that Barbaro's condition hasn't been changed.

I realize how serious is situation is. I've been gently suggesting for the past 24 hours that the reason NBC isn't releasing photos is because Bobby probably doesn't look like the Bobby we knew. And that it would be very upsetting to many of us.

The report I heard yesterday from NBC said that Bobby's condition is very guarded. I think very guarded is a STEP (not a huge)in the right direction. But that is a step away from critical.

Michael's Miracle

Posted by: Margaret at July 29, 2006 9:06 PM

I think initially Barbaro would not tolerate the sling. I'm pretty sure Dr. R. said that's why they couldn't use it for the first and second cast changes.

Our Bobby sure has learned alot - not the sling is his new toy and helper.

Sweet Talker wins at Saratoga - safe race - thats what matters

I have ESPN2 on right now, racing at Seratoga, the fillies. I'm sorry, I can't watch, they're all such pretty girls. I'll go back afterward to see who won.

Sorry I was wrong - Sweet Talker came in second.

Report on Barbaro coming up!!!

Posted by: Sally in Key West at July 29, 2006 9:17 PM

Barbaro update right now on ESPN2

Posted by: Susan in TX at July 29, 2006 9:17 PM

Now Pamela - we need to be very choosie when it comes to hooking up our guy. We have plenty of time.

Posted by: Sally in Key West at July 29, 2006 9:18 PM

I strongly disagree with the announcer...Bernadini would have eaten Barbaro's
dirt in the Preakness!

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 9:19 PM

I second that - there is no one that could have betten Barbaro.

Posted by: Sally in Key West at July 29, 2006 9:20 PM

Got that from backing up my Tivo to the start of the show...the guy said..." I know it isn't politically correct, but...Bernadini's win in the
Preakness was just as impressive as Barbaro's win at the Derby...maybe even more so!"
NO WAY!

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 9:21 PM

Barbaro took a crowd of favorites and demolished them in the Derby...and they were all fresher than the horses going into the Preakness! NO WAY!

Margaret: I agree with you. We have been talking about that. The fact Barbaro does not look the same right now. They just showed Barbaro on TV, but that was previous video - I remember seeing that a few weeks ago. With the loss of muscle and his inability to exercise, it is certain he does not look the same, but that is normal for what he is going through...with healing comes the ability for him to eventually get that back....

Dont think that it was tried but hope you are right-because this would no tbe happening now-I understand changing left hoof but why the right????Bones have to stay and remain-immobile to heal-thats why casts are used-do you know a person with a broken bone where they change their cast every week???????Just is a fact-makes no sense-I have good thoughts about Brabro-think positive what does it hurt?I do beleive our prayers are working-and I know that the people there know we are watching-so they will be doing their best-I do feel they love him-and know the Jacksons do-what fine people-is too bad all people arent like them-and michael matz what a sweet person-god bless Barbaro and all who love him!!!

Just an FYI...Barbaro still leads the money chase...and his last (completed) race was the DERBY!
