Fair Hill's Derby Connections
Many years ago when we first came to Fair Hill we realized that the facilities this place had to offer were a gold mine of untapped potential.
Quality horses and trainers now swamp the training center enjoying the well cushioned dirt track and the wood chip fiber track as well as acres of lush turf fields.
The best kept secret on the east coast has seen, in recent years, two Breeders Cup winners, an Arlington Million winner and many other prominent stakes winners.
Michael Matz with his unbeaten charge Barbaro prepped the horse all last summer here before wintering in Florida for a shot at the Kentucky Derby. With 'Derby Fever' running through Fair Hill the exploits of this horse are the focal point of every local horse fan. It is also further justification for everyone who stood by Fair Hill through the lean years where many trainers were not able to fully realize how a training center can work to the advantage of trainers.
There are training centers and there is Fair Hill. Barclay Tagg now sees the advantage of being here and tries each summer to collect available stalls like a poker player collects his chips. Showing Up, Barclay's Derby contender, was put through his paces at Fair Hill last year. Seeing the quality of 2yos that are buzzing in inside rail this Spring, don't be surprised if the name Matz, Motion or Klesaris are listed in next year's Derby field.
The drama surrounding the training center in recent months has been enough that a fiction novelist would find it far fetching. With a devastating fire that destroyed a barn full of horses in November, and the outbreak of a Herpes virus in February that shut the place down for several weeks, it is nice to be able to support Barbaro and Showing Up, as graduates of this fine school and products of good horsemanship.
