First Time Starters

Getting horses prepared for their first career starts can be one of the most rewarding and challenging aspects of training.

With claiming horses you already have a base-line on where your horse belongs and it is often the case of good maintenance and care that keeps them at a certain level.

Young horses with untapped potential have to learn how to race. Assessing the horse's strengths and weaknesses are a constant challenge while juggling fitness, knowledge and taltent, the training of a young horse is time consuming and requires a lot of patience.

We recently got a couple of three year olds to the races and both ran good races to place in their first lifetime starts. Both horses showed spped from the gate, experienced dirt in their faces, and finished gamely.

The next challenge is maintaining soundness and finding the right races which is still a mystery because these horses could improve off their initial starts or could run a completely different race with a different outcome.

Consistency is a great attribute in any racehorse and trying to keep consistent is another real challenge.
